Diexi Haizi Lake, located at an altitude of 2,268 meters, was originally home to Diexi City, a crucial ancient border town. It served as a strategic transportation hub connecting the western Sichuan plain to the Songpan drylands, Qinghai, and Gansu. It was heavily guarded throughout the ages. According to the Maozhou Chronicle, Canling County was established here in the sixth year of the Han Dynasty (111 BC). The city&#39;s name subsequently changed throughout history. During the Republic of China, it was part of Diexi District, under the jurisdiction of Maoxian County, and the city was bustling with merchants.

At 3:50:30 PM on August 25, 1933, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Diexi. Within minutes of the tremor, the center of Diexi City collapsed almost vertically, forming a single, stepped path. The earthquake&#39;s downward slope reached 500-600 meters. Diexi City and 21 nearby Qiang villages were completely destroyed. Surrounding mountains collapsed, blocking the Minjiang River and creating 11 barrier lakes. Nearly 10,000 casualties were reported. This event is known in history as the &quot;Great Diexi Earthquake of China.&quot; Diexi Lake was formed as a result of this devastating earthquake. Its deepest point reaches 98 meters, with an average depth of 82 meters. It holds 150 million cubic meters of water and covers an area of over 3.5 million square meters.

Looking at this 12-kilometer-long Qingyao Lake, I don&#39;t know whether to feel joy or sorrow. Diexi, a small town once destroyed. On the day disaster struck, an earthquake buried a city and severed a river. But it also left a legacy. Soon, survivors discovered this series of high-altitude barrier lakes. This is the Diexi Lake we see today.

We stopped by the car on our way from Chengdu to Wenchuan and then to Songpan to take photos and learn more about history.
