A guide to taking the elderly to Lushan! A slow-paced, less tiring experience, ready to use right after reading. I took my elderly family to Lushan for four days. I've compiled the itinerary, expenses, and precautions. It's all laid out in plain language, so you can plan your trip in a way that's convenient for you. For those traveling with elderly people, just use it as a reference. I. 4-Day Itinerary: Slow-paced, less climbing, less fatigue for the elderly. Day 1: Arrive at Lushan, watch the sunset, and explore the town. 1. Departure: Direct high-speed rail for easy transfers. Depart from Shijiazhuang, take the high-speed rail at 9:07 AM and arrive at Jiujiang Lushan Station at 1:42 PM. No need to worry about transfers. From Lushan High-Speed Railway Station, you can directly take the tourist bus to the Lushan Cableway, saving you the long journey and worrying your elderly. 2. Ascending Lushan: Bus + Cableway: Easier and less stressful. First, take the bus to the Lushan Cableway entrance (10 RMB per person). Then, take the cableway up and down the mountain (120 RMB per person). The ride takes about 20 minutes. Additionally, you must buy a bus for the mountain shuttle, which costs 70 yuan per person. You'll need it to visit various scenic spots later, saving you a lot of walking. 3. Afternoon: Watch the sunset at Xiaotianchi and avoid climbing stairs After dropping off our luggage at the hotel, we headed to Xiaotianchi in the afternoon, primarily to watch the sunset. There are only 400 steps, which isn't a lot, so an elderly person can walk slowly. We also finished watching the sunset just as we were descending the mountain, so we weren't in a rush. 4. Evening: Stroll along Guling Street and experience the town's nightlife Since we didn't have any strenuous activities planned for the evening, we took our elderly family on a leisurely stroll along Guling Street. There were restaurants and small shops along the street, and we could enjoy the evening breeze and experience the feeling of a small mountain town. It was a great way for them to relax. Day 2: Visit San Diequan and take the miniature train to save energy In the morning, we specifically went to San Diequan Waterfall, hoping to let them see it up close. The key point: you absolutely have to take the miniature train! The miniature train only involves climbing 2,700 steps, descending the mountain before ascending. While we still have to walk, it's much easier than a full climb. Without the train, there are more steps, which would be too much for an elderly person. Day 3: Strolling the Flower Path and Ruqin Lake for a Relaxing View 1. Morning: Flower Path + Ruqin Lake + Fairy Cave + Jinxiu Valley In the morning, we first visited the Flower Path and Ruqin Lake. These two places are close together, and the roads are mostly flat, making walking easy for the elderly. Strolling along the lakeside and among the flowers was a pleasant experience. We then visited Fairy Cave and Jinxiu Valley, returning to the Flower Path and taking the tourist bus to the Lushan Conference Site. 2. Afternoon: Lushan Conference Site, but didn't get to visit Meilu In the afternoon, we visited the Lushan Conference Site, where we could see historical artifacts and learn about it. We had originally planned to visit Meilu, but it was under renovations and we didn't get to see it, which was a bit disappointing. It's worth checking with your hotel beforehand to avoid missing out. Day 4: Return, a relaxing journey After breakfast at the hotel, we took the cable car down the mountain and then to Lushan High-Speed Railway Station for the high-speed train back to Shijiazhuang. The trip wasn't rushed, and the elderly didn't feel tired. II. Accommodation Recommendations: Choose one that includes breakfast and is close to the train station for convenience. When choosing a hotel for elderly people, consider two key factors: First, it should include breakfast, so they don't have to search for food in the morning and can still enjoy a warm meal. Second, it's best if there's a tourist bus stop near the hotel, so they don't have to walk too far to get to the attractions, especially in the morning or evening. Additionally, most hotels on the mountain offer pick-up from the cable car entrance. Just call the hotel after getting off the cable car, and they'll come pick you up, saving you the trouble of carrying your luggage and finding your way around. III. 8 Essential Tips for Traveling with Elderly People 1. The weather in Lushan is unpredictable, so be sure to bring rain gear and a light jacket. It's cooler up there than at the base, so don't let your elderly catch a cold. 2. When hiking, have your elderly wear comfortable sneakers with non-slip soles. Be careful when walking up stairs. Safety is paramount. 3. While most meals on the mountain are average, the Shancheng Farmhouse we ate at was quite good. The taste and price were acceptable. Simply order light dishes for your elderly. When you take your elderly to Lushan, do you prefer more flat road viewing or a shorter hike to see the waterfalls? Let's discuss in the comments!
