The first time you come to Lhasa, you must eat local Tibetan food. This is an old restaurant. You can see the lively street scene from the window on the second floor. However, there is no smoking ban. I don't like the smell of smoke and it will be a bit uncomfortable to meet guests smoking. I can only order one thing for one person, so I ordered the most classic potato fried lamb chops. The portion is not large, the lamb chops are cut into small pieces, and the potatoes are actually French fries. The taste is good and very fragrant. The service is also good, and the waiter is friendly. Some people say that the service is not good, but I personally think it is mutual. As a guest, you are polite, and the waiter will naturally welcome you.
[Environment] Located at the corner of Barkhor Street, you can clearly see the two streets of Barkhor Street from the upstairs corner. The environment inside has a strong Tibetan atmosphere. The meals provided are also Tibetan meals and afternoon tea, which is very suitable for watching the sunset
[Taste] The taste and price of the internet celebrity check-in spot are just average. You eat for the feelings and it's good to feel it. [Environment] Dim lighting. You can see the Barkhor street view from the window seat. Large tables need to be booked in advance. There are some cute peripherals made of coffee grounds. They are worth buying. [Service] The boss is very kind. I would like to especially thank the waitresses in the store. It's very busy at mealtime, but the service is very good. I am impressed💖 🌟 Especially after I visited Chongsaikang Market this time, I was chased by several paranoid young men for several kilometers. They insisted that I buy his goods. No matter how I refused, it was useless. I went through security twice and went to the toilet once. Finally, I came to Maji Ami and still couldn't get rid of them! ? 😱The meal was almost ready. They went upstairs like wandering souls and suddenly sat opposite me to persuade me to buy something. I was scared to death. I asked for help from the waitress. The waitress used Tibetan to persuade the two young men to leave. I was still a little scared when I finished my meal and left (after all, it was dark for a girl). The waitress also told me about the nearby security booth and the crowded streets. 🥹I was very touched. Thanks again to the beautiful, kind and gentle waitress🤗💕
There are very few tourists in Lhasa in April, and all scenic spots are half-price. However, for Tibetan people, admission is free every day because they have to circumambulate the temple and make pilgrimages day after day. This is a rare opportunity to climb the Potala Palace (པོ་ཏ་ལ) again, which is 3,756 meters above sea level, built on the mountain, with overlapping buildings and majestic palaces. I can visit and learn about the culture, beliefs and architectural style of this palace as I wish. When I walked down the Red Hill in the afternoon, I saw many elderly Tibetans turning prayer wheels and walking around the Potala Palace. I didn’t know what they were praying for, but my heart was moved by them. As secular people, we only thought about eating, and quoted the famous quote from Tsangyang Gyatso, “How can one have both in this world, without disappointing the Tathagata and without disappointing you” to comfort ourselves and not forget to eat, haha. When it comes to eating in Lhasa, the first thing that comes to mind is Makye Ame, which has always been in my heart. It is a small yellow earthen building with a strong Tibetan style located in the southeast corner of Barkhor Street. Because of the new friends, we gave up other options and went to Makye Ame. In the off-season, you don't need to take a number and wait in line. Just walk in steadily, climb the wooden stairs, choose a table overlooking Barkhor Street, sit down, and randomly pick up two guestbooks from the numerous guestbooks on the bookshelf. Then, order the special Tibetan food that everyone likes, watch, eat, and feel the unique atmosphere and taste here. Like many people, the first time I knew the name Magi Ami was from Tsangyang Gyatso’s poem "On the Top of the Eastern Mountain". Legend has it that one day the poet was resting in a tavern on Barkhor Street, and a girl as beautiful as the moon lifted the curtain outside the door to peek at him. From then on, the poem "On the top of the eastern mountain, a bright moon rises, and Magi Ami's face appears in my heart" has been passed down through the world... It is precisely because of this that many of us have a great misunderstanding of the term "Magi Ami", and regard Magi Ami as the poet's lover. In fact, many couples from all over the world have come to Lhasa and regard this small yellow building as a romantic place to witness their love. Teacher Losang told us that, in fact, the correct pronunciation of the word Maji Ami in Tibetan should be Maji Ama, which was misread by some Han people. It comes from the beautiful legend of the Tibetan "unmarried woman", which means a holy mother and a pure fairy. Here Ama means mother, and Maji, "Ma" is a negative word in Tibetan, and Ji means to give birth. In other words, the literal translation of this word means not the mother who gave birth to you... Suddenly I realized that the word Maji Ami is not only used to describe one's lover or spouse, but also expresses the respect of Tibetan men for women. In their eyes, lovers and spouses are as sacred as the mothers who gave birth to them. Misunderstandings and estrangements often come from such differences and distortions in cultural beliefs. At that moment, I felt ashamed of my secular mind. How vulgar! When I walked out of Maji Ama, the sky was full of stars, lights were dim, and the five-star red flag was everywhere. I followed the Tibetans and measured the distance from the sacred Maji Ama on Barkhor Street to the secular hotel with my feet. At this moment, I just wanted to deeply feel the charming style of Lhasa at night once again. Lhasa, a city you will remember forever
Just come here to take pictures📸. Many shops on Barkhor Street will take a group of photos for customers with Maji Ami as the background. It is indeed very photogenic👍🏻, because of its color and its story. But - forget about going in for a meal😂 Everyone around me who has eaten at Maji Ami like me, the final evaluation is the same as mine - expensive and not delicious. And we ordered all their recommended dishes😭. 🔺There are only a few pieces of steak, the hard bones have a few strands of meat, and the meat is dry and sticky. 🔺The grilled mushrooms are greasy. 🔺The lamb chops and potatoes are barely passable with potato strips. 🔺The sweet tea is acceptable. 🤦🏻♀️If you must have a meal for poetry and distant places, then my suggestion is: just order a pot of sweet tea, sit by the window on the third floor, bask in the sun and enjoy the scenery.
The taste is OK, but a little expensive. I heard about this restaurant before I came to Lhasa, so I went there specially. There were a lot of people, the taste, the environment, etc. were OK, but some waiters were a little bit rude when they heard that I was alone. Maybe they thought how much money I could spend? Haha. But the waitress on the 3rd floor was pretty good.
