Hangzhou people are particular about seasonal food. Qiandao Lake is known for its proximity to the mountains and water. Around the Dragon Boat Festival, there's so much delicious food in Qiandao Lake. [Yeah] [One] Main Dinner: 🌟Must-order Bighead Carp🌟The fish is tender and fresh, with virtually no earthy smell. Both the fish head soup and the chopped pepper fish head are delicious. Adding the braised fish tail, you can enjoy it for three days straight without getting tired of it. 🌟Seasonal🌟 whitebait with eggs and pickled mustard greens and bamboo shoots are freshly stir-fried and serve with a vibrant aroma. I packed up the leftover corn chips and later bought some pre-packaged corn chips from Taobao to take home. [Grin] Recommended shops: Wan Ji Chun Cai Fu, Chun Yu Story, Bao Rong Fish Restaurant [Two] Qilong Lane Snacks Recommended: An Shang Rice Noodles, Fang Ying Pig's Trotters, and various sticky rice dishes. [DoubleHearts] An Shang Rice Noodles are a local specialty, similar to rice noodle rolls but softer and more glutinous. The filling is minimal and serves only as a garnish. The pickled mustard greens are the best. [DoubleHearts] Fangying Pig's Trotters is not on the main street, but diagonally across the street from the entrance of Qilong Lane. They're charcoal-grilled on site, with crispy skin and soft inside. You won't be able to stop eating them. [Three] Breakfast We enjoyed breakfast with a lake view. We ordered takeout from the restaurant called Hungry Han Cuisine, a "Whole Bean Feast"—tofu pudding, soy milk, and slightly spicy tofu buns. With heaven above and Suzhou and Hangzhou below, everyone dreams of visiting Hangzhou. Qiandao Lake, with its 1,078 islands, is one of Hangzhou's three 5A-level tourist attractions. It's not only a landmark of Hangzhou, but also a national 5A-level tourist attraction and one of the world's three largest Thousand Island Lakes. With numerous attractions and hotels lining the lakeshore, there's no need to worry about where to go or stay. Hundreds of attractions, large and small, and countless hotels and B&Bs line the lakeshore. So, where can we find delicious food in Qiandao Lake? While cycling around the lake, a local friend recommended a fish-themed restaurant, which seemed like a good idea. The restaurant, called Qiandao Lake Chunyu Story, is located on Sunshine Road in Qiandao Lake Town. It offers a prime location and convenient transportation. According to my friend, they offer not only authentic Qiandao Lake cuisine but also innovative dishes, such as the homemade soft-shelled turtle, one of Chun'an's top ten dishes, Chun'an organic fish head, and the Chun'an intangible cultural heritage flower pork hot pot. [Pork Hot Pot] This intangible cultural heritage delicacy from Chun'an was recently shortlisted for the 2023 Hangzhou Annual Food "Light Luxury Selection" list. Made with free-range, Chun'an-raised pork, the meat is succulent, juicy, and fragrant, with thick, chewy skin and a fatty, yet not greasy texture. While pork is the primary ingredient, this dish is a combination of meat and vegetables. It consists of four layers, with a variety of vegetables stacked underneath and the pork on top. Slow-cooked in a copper pot over a gentle fire, the dish is prepared around the stove, symbolizing reunion and auspicious meaning. It is said to be a favorite dish for festive occasions and family celebrations. [Private Signature Soft-shelled Turtle] This dish is the signature delicacy of Chunyu Story and is adorned with a sense of ritual. Not only do the host and guest unveil the red colored paper together, but the staff also chant: "A distinguished guest has arrived, and the top dish is the best! Qiandao Lake soft-shelled turtles are the best in the world!" The soft-shelled turtles are said to be carefully selected from ecologically sourced turtles from the rivers and ponds of Qiandao Lake. Their meat is tender and chewy, rich in collagen and highly nutritious. They also incorporate pork knuckles or bull whips, then simmer over low heat, allowing the sauce to blend seamlessly into each piece. The resulting broth is rich and flavorful, with thick, chewy, and tender fish skirts, leaving a lingering aftertaste. It's truly one of Chun'an's "Top Ten Golden Dishes." [Qiandao Lake Chun Brand Organic Fish] Qiandao Lake is located in the mountainous area of southern Zhejiang, far from industrial pollution and boasting an excellent ecological environment. It is one of China's four major freshwater fish bases. Chun Brand organic fish, the first domestically certified brand, is renowned both domestically and internationally. So, when visiting Qiandao Lake, be sure to sample the local lake fish. At Chun Fish Story, we not only enjoyed authentic Qiandao Lake fish heads, but also enjoyed a two-in-one experience. The saying "one fish, two ways to cook it" refers to two local dishes: Qiandao Lake Chun Brand Thick Soup Fish Head and Qiandao Lake Chun Brand Hongyun Fish Head. The Qiandao Lake Chun Brand Thick Soup Fish Head has a creamy, delicious broth that's incredibly fresh, and the fish is tender and delicious. The Hongyun Fish Head is slightly spicy, and there's a special ceremony at the table where the staff cuts gold bars (golden fried dough sticks) into the fish, which is a symbolic gesture. [Fruitwood Charcoal Grilled Lamb Chops] Although this is a fish-themed restaurant, their signature dish isn't just fish. Fruitwood Charcoal Grilled Lamb Chops are also a standout. They use high-quality lamb chops, slowly grilled over fruitwood charcoal, for a taste that's not at all smelly, and I think their flavor rivals that of grilled lamb chops from Inner Mongolia. [Steamed Cured Meat Combination] Steamed cured meat is not unique to Qiandao Lake. This cooking method is also found in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Chongqing, and Hunan. It combines cured pork, air-dried chicken, marinated pork, cured fish, and cured sausage. While simple to prepare, it boasts a rich cured flavor, a perfectly salty-sweet texture, and a tender, non-greasy texture, making it incredibly delicious. [Simmered Pig's Trotters with Tofu] This home-cooked dish features a tempting milky-white broth. The cured pig's trotters are slowly simmered with tofu, creating a refreshing and fragrant flavor. The trotters are soft, chewy, and elastic, while the tofu is exceptionally smooth. This is a delicious Qiandao Lake specialty. [Handmade Corn Cakes] There's a Qiandao Lake saying, "Holding a balu cake in my hand, stepping on a white charcoal fire, I'm the only one left besides the emperor." The balu cakes mentioned here are actually corn cakes. Corn cakes are a handmade whole-grain snack. The combination of yellow corn cakes and grass-green mugwort cakes, paired with homemade fermented tofu, is truly delicious. Qiandao Lake Fermented Rice-Wine Steamed Buns: These buns are unique. They look like a comma, with a small hook underneath the rounded shape. They're incredibly soft and chewy, with a subtle aroma of wine. Locals say eating them can help you conceive a son. Have you heard of this? Some say Hangzhou is a food desert, but Yufan believes this is a misunderstanding. It's simply a matter of finding the right restaurants.
