In order to get a full understanding of the hotel experience, you may want to read all three sections: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The Good: * Amazing customer service (5 stars for this) : The hotel staff wins your heart with the par excellence customer service they offer. Michael and his team at the front desk went out of their way to make our stay a memorable experience. First, the beds were not the best ones for my personal needs. I cannot sleep on foam mattresses. I somehow managed the first night of stay and Michael arranged for a rollaway bed to be put on the floor for the next two days. Our flight was late in the night on the checkout day and we requested a late checkout. The front desk looked up and since their guests were arriving later in the evening, they let us check out late. This helped us a lot with our onward journey. * Location: 3 of the rooms (#2,3 &4) have a nice view of the amazonia river (a tributary of the amazon). Also, the general location of the hotel is right in the heart of the city, just a couple of blocks from the Plaza de Armas and the most happening city square. The tuktuks parked right outside the hotel are a mode of transportation literally from the door step. * The Rooms: A mansion turned hotel with 20 feet high ceilings and so much of space to move around makes you feel at home. All amenities in the room along with potable water jug, microwave, a hot plate, silverware etc. make it such a comfortable stay. A nice pool in the courtyard adds to the get up of the place. Not to mention the beautiful library that one must visit. * Food: Very nice breakfast served with fresh juice and the standard breakfast items. This is not a buffet and is served individually in again a huge breakfast/dining room. The servers are so sweet and take every care to make you feel at home. The Bad: * The hotel is surrounded by tons of work happening and most of the area is being worked on making the place pretty much inaccessible from the first lane. * The location is close to the city center but the locality is not very clean and there are almost like slum dwellings around the place. * The bathroom toilets have a stench that needs to be addressed by the hotel. It's an amazing place but surely would do with some maintenance. * The room has a huge window for the amazon river view but it is sealed by a glass pane. One realizes that it not only prevents noise from the boardwalk area but also prevents mosquitos from entering the room. But again, it could have been designed to be openable. The Ugly: * This section has nothing to do with the hotel but the boardwalk use by the public. You can see teenage boys in the boardwalk area making joints and smoking all evening. Cops do come there to check but there is a limit to what they can control.
Victoria Regia Hotel

Five stars as it is as advertised and met my expectations. Two stays – one night before my 4D/3N Amazon rainforest trip and one night immediately after it. I was originally booked at Hilton DoubleTree for the first stay, but then I learned that Victoria Regia was associated with the Amazon lodge that I was using, so it made sense to book the early stay as everything would be coordinated; in addition Victoria Regia was ½ the price. I had previously booked the 2nd stay via an OTA because I had a free night that had to be utilized before 30 May. Victoria Regia also stored my bags while I was at the Amazon lodge. Victoria Regia is about 30 minutes from the airport (with traffic). It is within walking distance of the main square. Room was a bit small, but adequate give the short stay. One may want to request room in the front as the rooms in the back do not have a window to the exterior; just to the interior courtyard. There is also a small restaurant in the hotel and the outdoor pool seems quite popular. My room included breakfast. I only tried breakfast one time as I had an early flight for my second stay. The breakfast was very basic. Buffet of a few cold items and a hot item, which was brown rice, pieces of egg, chicken (or maybe pork), and green onions. It was fairly flavorful. Juice seemed to be fresh. Two issues. There are several wifi routers to chose from, each having a strong signal in the restaurant. During both stays, I had to constantly change between routers as suddenly (very basic) e-mails would stop loading. This was quite frustrating. I did report this to the front desk at checkout, so I am not typing a note about something I didn’t make the property aware of; apparently the routers need a periodic reset. The other issue is a bit of a pet peeve. It was obvious that many Spanish-speaking guests were present as well as some English-speaking guests. Yet, there are no English-speaking TV news channels. Specifically, I don’t understand why there is France 24, RT, and CCTV, but no CNN International. With regards to Iquitos itself, it is a gritty city. Peru was country #57 for me. Not sure I’d utilize more time to tour Iquitos. The advertised museums were generally closed. And a reliable person told me that while the Belen market was highly recommended to walkthrough, he also suggested that I find a local to hang with me (not necessarily as a guide, but someone to watch my back.) All in all, if I ever return to Iquitos, I’d certainly consider this property again.
Double Tree by Hilton Iquitos

The hotel is far from perfect but it is the best stay in Iquitos. Customer service is questionable. I had a dispute with the front desk about room rate - considering I could purchase a room online for 30$US per night cheaper than the hotel was charging me. They did not match the rate so I booked online. I was impressed by the way one of the front desk staff dealt with my upset and so I emailed the manager of the hotel to congratulate this member of staff. But the manager and no other hotel staff got back to me about my email. For a Double Tree Hilton (and I have stayed in these hotels around the world), that shows a lack of professional and integrity for the customer. I expect better from this group. But it is the best hotel in Iquitos so I put up with it for the time I am here. If there was a hotel that was at the same standard in Iquitos, I wouldn’t have stayed here as many nights as I did.

The breakfast is very average, but the waiter in the restaurant is very enthusiastic. If you have any situation, you will come over and ask for help. You will be asked separately if you want eggs. The room is okay, but the decoration is relatively old. The windows are on the patio. Generally speaking, it is okay. The supplies are not complete, but the good thing is that they can provide free shuttle planes.
