If you're planning a trip to Vyborg, it's best to schedule it from Friday to Saturday. On Saturday from morning until noon, caravans of tourist buses will pour into the city, making the highways and local roads heavily congested. They usually leave on Sunday afternoon. Keep this in mind when planning your trip! ☝🏻 For an overnight stay, Hotel Mayak is an excellent choice. It's just a 5-minute drive from Vyborg Castle. 🏰 By the way, you get a fantastic view of the castle right from the hotel grounds! 👀 A surprisingly large area is tucked away behind the high fence on Ostrovnaya Street. Well-kept lawns, neat pathways, benches, a dedicated BBQ area, a private pier, and stunning views of the opposite shore of the Banny Gulf make you feel like you're vacationing somewhere deep in the countryside, even though everything is practically within walking distance! The hotel feels quite fresh and charming, aside from a few questionable design choices, though that's purely subjective. Our room offered lovely views of the gulf and Vyborg Castle. It was clean and fairly standard, featuring floor-to-ceiling curtains, a small workspace, and a compact bathroom. The plumbing does leave something to be desired, though—if you have upstairs neighbors, you'll hear the pipes quite loudly when they flush! Keep that in mind. Other than that, everything was wonderful! 🍽️ As for the food and breakfast, it might look like a pretty basic buffet at first glance, BUT trust me, you won't leave hungry! They offer light snacks as well as hot options like oatmeal or an omelet with sausages (you can even ask for both!). 🤤 The receptionist also highly recommends the homemade pastries baked by one of the hotel staff—they are absolutely delicious! Definitely give them a try! You can enjoy your breakfast on either the indoor or outdoor veranda, surrounded by flowers and soaking in the beautiful view! 😍 Such a great vibe! At the hotel, you can rent paddleboards and boats, rent a BBQ grill, or use the grilling area for free 🥩🍖 if you bring your own portable grill (like we did). Near the BBQ zone, they are currently building some single-story, motel-style apartments overlooking the gulf. It's going to get a lot busier! In 1293, the Swedish regent Torgils Knutsson founded a stone castle on Castle Island during the Third Crusade—this marked the beginning of the town. Translated from Old Swedish, "Vyborg" means "holy fortress." In 1970, a museum was opened on the castle grounds. It now houses the Vyborg United Museum-Reserve. While strolling through the old town, you can see the Clock Tower, another recognizable symbol of the city. Originally, the tower served as a bell tower for the cathedral, and in 1848, a clock was installed. The upper tiers offer views over the rooftops of old Vyborg. There's plenty to see inside, too. In the square across the street from the castle, stands the Old Town Hall, built in 1789, creating a very atmospheric setting. A monument to the city's founder, Torgils Knutsson, stands in the square in front of the town hall. The Burger's Manor (built in the 16th century) was once home to wealthy citizens. It now houses an exhibition center and a coffee shop. Another monument of medieval architecture is the merchant's house of the Holy Guild. Another interesting structure is the round tower, affectionately nicknamed "Fat Catherine." Built in the mid-16th century (approximately 1547–1550), the tower was designed by architect Hann Bergen. This stone artillery tower, a rondel type, is one of two surviving battle towers of the medieval Vyborg Fortress. It currently houses a restaurant. If you're visiting Saint Petersburg and have a day to spare, I highly recommend taking a train to Vyborg, a small town just 38 kilometers from the Finnish border and about 130 kilometers from Saint Petersburg. We took the Express train, which took just over an hour. The fare was 342 rubles per trip (approximately 300+ baht round trip). Our first impression was how clean, comfortable, quiet, and punctual the Russian trains were. It was a pleasant ride, and we arrived in no time. Vyborg is a small town with a long history, built by Swedes before being successively under Russian and Finnish rule. This gives it a unique charm, with architecture and an atmosphere that perfectly blends the cultures of all three countries. But the highlight of this trip wasn't the autumn foliage! As soon as we stepped off the train, we, the only "black-haired people #vyborgrussia at the station," were immediately greeted by a female police officer! They started by checking our passports, followed by our return flight tickets and registration papers for our accommodation in Russia (ours weren't asked). Then, the first officer called a second officer for assistance because we couldn't communicate in English, and finally, they called for an undercover male officer to help with the search. It was a bit confusing at first, but it's understandable. Since it's a border town, the authorities are especially strict about preventing illegal immigration. If you're planning a trip here, remember to always carry all your travel documents with you. After overcoming that initial excitement, what awaits is the breathtaking view of golden yellow autumn leaves covering the entire city. The weather in late October is very cold, with strong winds that make your face shiver and your hands so cold you have to keep them in your pockets. But it's this coldness that makes Vyborg incredibly romantic and enchanting. This city might not be on everyone's top tourist list, but for us, Vyborg was one of the most memorable one-day trips from Saint Petersburg. We experienced history, the cold, and the beauty of autumn all in one day. The train was already packed when we boarded; we barely managed to find empty seats, and many passengers had to stand. We arrived in Vyborg at 12:37 PM. From the station, we first walked to the Alvar Aalto Library. Alvar Aalto is the architect who designed the library and the famous IKEA stool. You can actually see these same stools inside the library. The building features a minimalist style both inside and out, finished with white plaster and wood. We popped inside and checked out the halls with their round skylights. Next, we headed toward the historical center. We immediately noticed that the city has a very European vibe, somewhat unusual for Russia and highly appealing to tourists—it definitely deserves to be fully restored and showcased to the world. We walked past the post office, the cathedral, and a yellow tram, eventually reaching a square with a round tower. The tower is truly striking, catching your eye with its unexpectedly medieval appearance and unique shape. Without a second thought, we went up for lunch at the restaurant inside the tower to check out the medieval interior. The menu even includes a brief history of the building. We ordered a warm chicken and sun-dried tomato salad, pork loin, julienne, and some beer. The julienne was the highlight! Overall, the food wasn't mind-blowing—we'd give it a solid 4 out of 5, and the prices were a bit steep. After that, we headed down to Old Town Hall Square, admiring the harbor and Vyborg Castle. We crossed the bridge and explored the castle grounds. Next, we took a taxi to Monrepos Park. The forest and the coastal area are absolutely stunning! There's not much to do right at the entrance, and it can get a bit crowded, but it's definitely worth taking the short eco-trail to soak in the nature and breathe the fresh air! On our way back to the train station, we asked our taxi driver to swing by the Town Hall Tower and drive past the Merchant Guild House. All in all, we managed to see every landmark we had planned. We bought tickets for the next train and were in our seats by 6:44 PM. We made it back to St. Petersburg right around 8:00 PM.

One of the highlights was the excursion on the "St. Petersburg Venice" motor ship: we sailed along the Moika River, the Winter Canal, the Fontanka River, and the Kryukov Canal. We saw all the drawbridges, Peter the Great's Cabin, and even "fed" Chizhik-Pyzhik with a coin. We rested our legs for an hour and a half and enjoyed listening to the guide. The city is European, but there are a lot of renovations going on—it will be even more beautiful in the future. Of course, we visited all the main sights: Kazan Cathedral, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Admiralty, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, stopped by the House of Books, strolled around New Holland Island, took a photo near the Bronze Horseman, and rode scooters along the embankment near the Lakhta Center. About the food: It's hard to go wrong with your choice in St. Petersburg—almost everything is delicious. I especially remember the Brisket bar (steaks and ramen), the Butcher's House restaurant (ribs and burgers 🔥), the Holy Ribs bar (chocolate-covered ribs), as well as the Bushe bakery and Black Wood pub. The smelt here is completely different from the Far Eastern variety, but it's worth trying! We walked dozens of kilometers over six days, but the white nights, the blooming lilacs on the Field of Mars, and the architecture were worth every step! The tower is located on Castle Island at the address: 1 Castle Island, Vyborg, and is part of the Vyborg United Museum-Reserve. Throughout its centuries-long history, the tower has been rebuilt several times, sustaining damage during sieges and fires, which altered the shape of its main body and base. 🛠️For a long time, access to the top of the tower was closed due to large-scale reconstruction work. In 2025, the tower was reopened to the public. The restorers did an incredible job! A massive illuminated spiral staircase and a glass elevator for tower staff, visitors with limited mobility, and seniors over 60 (to use the elevator, you must book in advance by phone via the museum's website) blend beautifully into the tower's medieval architecture! The embrasures, walls, windows, and the tower's dome have also been restored. There are other restored premises on the island open to the public (the main museum building, the armory, the governor's house). There is a free restroom on the island! 🧧The cost to go up the tower is 500 rubles. In addition to this, you can stroll around the entire island, visit the cafe, and take part in various activities: archery, or forging a spoon, knife, or various amulets in the smithy. ❗️Tickets are sold at the box offices at the entrance to the island.
