Budget-friendly travel in August and September: places I've personally tested and found that won't disappoint.
Want to have a great time on a tight budget? These 8️⃣ places are worth checking out!
01 Taizhou|Zhejiang
Tiantai Mountain's entrance fee is practically free, and Guoqing Temple is also free. Go at 7 am; the mist hasn't cleared yet, and the Sui Pagoda stands beside the rice paddies—the tranquility is worth every penny. In the afternoon, climb Qiongtan Valley; the boardwalk hugs the cliff face, with the sound of the stream following you. Remember to bring non-slip shoes, as the stone steps are really slippery after rain.
The cable car at Shenxianju can be purchased round trip, saving you energy and time. The Ruyi Bridge at the summit spans two peaks; it sways a bit in the wind, so if you're afraid of heights, just take the other side of the boardwalk. The entrance fee plus the cable car is just over 100 yuan, and students get an additional discount.
Taizhou City is most comfortable to visit in the evening. Enter Ziyang Street from Xingshan Gate and enjoy egg white lamb tail and zaogeng (a type of stew) along the way. Street vendors offer a bowl of wheat shrimp for 15 yuan, with generous portions of dried shrimp and clams. The city wall entrance fee is 50 yuan, but the light is good after 5:30 pm, so you don't need a filter for photos.
🚄 Take the high-speed train to Linhai Station, then a taxi to Fucheng takes about 20 minutes, or a ride-hailing service costs around 30 yuan. For accommodation, choose a clean and quiet guesthouse at the foot of Jinshan Mountain for around 100 yuan.
02 Xinzhou | Shanxi
The awe-inspiring Yanmen Pass can only be truly appreciated by standing on the gate tower in person. The entrance fee is 90 yuan, but the shuttle bus within the scenic area costs 10 yuan round trip. Don't skimp on this; it's a long climb from the parking lot to the pass. Before 10 am, there are fewer people, and the wind blowing in from the pass allows you to hear the flags fluttering.
For Wutai Mountain, be sure to book your tickets in advance through the official mini-program. During peak season, the queues on-site can be incredibly long. The cable car queue at Dailuo Peak is long; if you're physically fit, climb it yourself—1008 steps, a 40-minute walk, but worth it when you reach the top. The vegetarian restaurants in Taihuai Town cost around 30 yuan per person, serving Luohan vegetables with steamed buns—light but filling.
Laoniu Bay is located in Pianguan, where the Yellow River meets the Great Wall. It's a three-hour drive from Xinzhou city; hiring a car or driving yourself is best. Watching the sunset over the Yellow River at dusk, the water looks like it's covered in shattered gold. A cave dwelling guesthouse costs 120 yuan per night; the owner will cook Yellow River carp for you—it's incredibly delicious!
⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night in Wutai Mountain is significant. Even in August evenings, bring a jacket. The weather in the mountains is unpredictable, so a raincoat is more practical than an umbrella.
03 Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture | Sichuan
Jiuzhaigou in autumn is unparalleled, but going at the end of August is also breathtaking. The entrance fee plus sightseeing bus is over 200 yuan, expensive, but you'll feel it's worth it after seeing it. It's recommended to enter the valley early in the morning, first taking a bus to the primeval forest, then walking downhill. The reflection in Mirror Lake is best seen when there's no wind, before 9 am.
If I had to choose between Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou, I'd choose Jiuzhaigou. The calcified pools of Huanglong are indeed unique, but the boardwalks at altitudes above 3,000 meters are breathtaking, and those with average stamina may find themselves too tired to enjoy the scenery. If you want to visit both, allocate two days; don't cram in just one.
Shuangqiao Valley in Siguniang Mountain is the easiest of the three valleys to hike. The sightseeing bus takes you directly to the deepest part, and you can slowly explore downwards. Yaks roam freely on the meadows, and snow-capped mountains are right before your eyes—the sense of vastness is something the plains can't offer. The entrance fee plus the sightseeing bus is 150 yuan, with half-price tickets for students.
⚠️ High-altitude sun protection is no joke; the UV rays are so strong they can cause sunburn and peeling. Hats and sunglasses are essential. In August, the temperature is only around 10 degrees Celsius in the mornings and evenings, so pack a windproof jacket in your luggage.
04 Huizhou|Guangdong
West Lake in Huizhou is free, making it excellent value for money. Take a morning walk along the Su Causeway, from Gushan to Fengzhu Garden. The lotus flowers are in full bloom, and the breeze carries the fragrance of lotus leaves. For boating, rent a pedal boat for 40 yuan an hour. The reflection of Sizhou Pagoda in the lake is much better viewed than from the shore.
Luofu Mountain entrance fee is 60 yuan, and the cable car is 50 yuan one way. I recommend taking it up and walking down. Feiyun Peak at the summit is 1200 meters above sea level; on a clear day, you can see the entire Dongjiang Plain. At the foot of the mountain is Chongxu Ancient Temple, where Ge Hong practiced alchemy. The well at the entrance is said to cure diseases if you drink from it—believe it or not, touching the cool well water will instantly cool you down.
Xunliao Bay is best visited after 4 pm when the sun isn't so strong and the seawater temperature is just right. The beach is free; rent a parasol and two chairs for 50 yuan and relax until sunset. At the seafood market, you can choose your own seafood. Mantis shrimp is 35 yuan per jin (500g), and the restaurants nearby charge 15 yuan per dish for processing, half the price of ordering directly.
🍜 At the foot of Luofu Mountain, try the mountain spring tofu pudding for 3 yuan a bowl—it's so tender you can drink it with a straw! Remember to pack two bottles of Hakka yellow wine for around 20 yuan; it's a great souvenir. 05 Sanming | Fujian
The Danxia landforms of Dajin Lake are best appreciated from a boat. The boat ticket plus entrance fee is 160 yuan, and the entire trip takes three and a half hours, stopping at three islands. Ganlu Rock Temple is nestled in a crevice of the rock face, with a single pillar supporting the entire temple – the ancients were truly daring. At the Wild Fun Park, the waterfall is refreshingly cool, like having air conditioning on.
Taining Ancient City is free to enter, and evening is the perfect time to visit. The stone slabs of Shangshu Lane are polished smooth by countless walks, and the carved wooden lintels of the old houses on both sides are worth a closer look. Shangshu Mansion costs 20 yuan to enter; it preserves scenes of Ming Dynasty life, and the moss in the courtyard is as thick as a blanket.
Don't miss the warm mushroom buns in the ancient city – 3 yuan each, the skin is made of cudweed, and the filling is dried bamboo shoots and minced meat; one bite and you're greeted with a burst of broth. The "Youjiang Tofu" is also worth trying; it's tenderer than pudding, and with chili sauce, I could easily eat two plates.
📍 The "Old Brand Beef Noodles" stall at the entrance of the ancient town only opens until 2 PM. The beef is stewed until tender, and the broth is rich and flavorful, costing 12 yuan a bowl. If you arrive late, you'll only see the owner packing up.
06 Baoshan | Yunnan
The entrance fee to Heshun Ancient Town is 55 yuan, valid for three days—a great policy for slow travelers. Entering at 7 AM, before the tour groups arrive, you can walk to the washing pavilion to watch villagers washing clothes, wild ducks swimming in the rice paddies, and the morning smoke rising from the rooftops—it feels like stepping back a hundred years.
The entrance fee to Tengchong Volcanic Hot Sea Scenic Area is 50 yuan. The sulfurous smell from the geothermal steam can be smelled from afar. The water in the large boiling pot is over 90 degrees Celsius. There are vendors selling hot spring eggs nearby, four for 10 yuan a skewer, cooked in the hot sea water, with perfectly set yolks.
Rafting on grass in Beihai Wetland is a unique experience. The entrance fee plus rafting costs just over 100 yuan. Stepping on the grass raft, your feet sway slightly, like walking on a giant sponge. Irises bloom in August, a purple expanse floating on the water, swaying in the breeze.
Yunfeng Mountain is more recommended for those with good legs. The stone steps are steep and narrow, taking about forty minutes to climb, but the Taoist temple at the summit is built on a cliff, offering a breathtaking panoramic view. The cable car up costs 30 yuan one way, but you'll have to walk down; unless you have knee problems, disregard this advice.
⚠️ There are many guesthouses in Heshun Ancient Town; during the summer, you can find a decent courtyard room for 120-180 yuan. However, avoid those near the main street, as the bars are noisy until 11 pm. If you prefer quieter places, choose those deeper into the alleys.
07 Suzhou|Jiangsu
Tiger Hill entrance fee is 70 yuan, but in August, the bamboo forest at Tiger Hill is cool and refreshing, like another world. Enter from the North Gate, first see the Sword Pool, then climb to the Yunyan Temple Pagoda, which has been leaning for over a thousand years. Go in the morning when it's less crowded, allowing you to slowly admire the outline of the entire city from below the pagoda.
Choose one from the Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden, or Lion Grove Garden; don't try to see too many. I chose Lingering Garden. The entrance fee was 55 yuan, cheaper than the Humble Administrator's Garden, and there were half the number of tourists. The Crown Cloud Peak in the garden is a famous example of Taihu stones; standing before it, its slender, wrinkled, and translucent beauty cannot be captured in a photograph.
The bell of Hanshan Temple truly needs to be heard in person. The entrance fee is 20 yuan. Go after 3 pm; the tour groups have dispersed, and the temple is so quiet you can hear the wind chimes. The atmosphere of "Mooring at Maple Bridge at Night" can only be truly appreciated by standing on Maple Bridge at dusk.
🍜 Rongyanglou on Shantang Street sells four pan-fried buns for 8 yuan each; the bottoms are crispy, and the meat filling is juicy. After eating, walk west along Shantang Street. After crossing Xinmin Bridge, the number of tourists drops drastically, and the old Suzhou atmosphere suddenly emerges.
🚄 It's a 15-minute taxi ride from Suzhou Railway Station to Tiger Hill, or a 10-minute walk from Shantang Street Station on Metro Line 2. For accommodation, choose the area near Pingjiang Road; there are hostels and guesthouses under 200 yuan. A walk along the river in the evening is particularly pleasant.
08 Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai
The First Bend of the Yellow River, located in Maqin County, is most beautiful in August. Here, the Yellow River isn't a muddy mess, but a vibrant emerald green, like a jade ribbon winding through the vast grasslands. A round trip by chartered car from Maqin County costs 300 yuan; the driver will wait for you to take photos for two hours, which isn't expensive if you have a group.
The viewing platform is built on a mountain at an altitude of 3,800 meters. Climbing the steps will leave you breathless, so take your time. The light is best after 6 PM; the sunlight shines obliquely on the river bend, making the water shimmer with silver light. The vastness and tranquility are beyond the power of any photograph to capture.
There are vendors selling yogurt in the herders' tents on the grassland. A bowl costs ten yuan; it's so sour it makes your teeth ache, you need two spoonfuls of sugar to eat it. Enjoy it with barley cakes, sitting among wildflowers, with a cool breeze blowing from the snow-capped mountains—even in August, you'll need a fleece jacket.
⚠️ This route involves high altitudes, so prepare oxygen cylinders in advance. They cost 30 yuan a bottle at the town's pharmacy. Altitude sickness is no joke; rest if you feel dizzy, don't push yourself.
On the return trip, we passed the Amne Machin Snow Mountain viewing platform. On a clear day, you can see the main peak, its white summit piercing the clouds. At that moment, you'll feel that all the bumpy journey was worth it.
Eight places, ranked from highest to lowest budget: Jiuzhaigou is the most expensive but most worthwhile, Huizhou is the most economical. August and September are the best times to visit these places, so pack your bags and go before the crowds explode! For those who have been, share your experiences in the comments!
