Tips for climbing Jade Dragon Snow Mountain - Part 1
To Yulong Snow Mountain, you can either explore on your own or join a tour. I opted for a tour bought from trip.com since I couldn’t purchase tickets myself. It's also uncertain whether you'll be able to get tickets for the Glacier Park Cableway if you try to buy them on the spot at the station especially during peak station. My tour package, priced around SGD 98, included entrance fees, tickets for Lijiang Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Glacier Park Cableway, Blue Moon Valley, the Lijiang Impression Show, lunch, transport, a long windbreaker, and a bottle of oxygen.
📌How to Get There For Free and Easy Travellers
Navigate down from Blue Moon Valley to the Blue Moon Valley parking lot. Take the scenic bus to Shuiyue Pavilion, get off, and take the stairs back to the visitor center. From there, board the scenic bus to the cable car station (note: the Blue Moon Valley bus is on the first floor, and the snow mountain bus is on the second floor). Enjoy some snacks on the way to the cable car station.
📌Notes for the Cable Car
The cable car ride lasts about 8 minutes, and some shaking is normal. If there's strong wind, the cable car will automatically pause. Don’t panic. For those afraid of heights, it's best not to look down. Due to the rapid altitude change, consistently breathe in oxygen during the ride.
When descending from the cable car, you're at 4,506 meters above sea level. Climbing to the mountain's peak reaches 4,680 meters above sea level. For free and easy travellers, after descending, take bus 101 from the scenic spot's No. 3 parking lot to the ancient city. From the visitor center, you can take the scenic bus to various spots.
Since I opted for a tour, transportation to every spot was included and guided.
📌Climbing the Snowy Mountains on Foot
Climb slowly and rest after a few steps when encountering steep ladders. If you feel short of breath, stop immediately, rest, and take a few breaths of oxygen. Lean on the railing or sit down when resting, but avoid squatting, as standing up from a squat can cause oxygen deprivation. The temperature was around -2 to -3 degrees Celsius when I visited, so bring a windbreaker and wear warm clothes. The paths are slippery, so wear proper hiking shoes—I bought Hoka hiking shoes. If the weather is bad, especially if it's windy, you won't be allowed to go up to the snow mountain at all.
📌When to Take Oxygen
In Blue Moon Valley, there's no need to take oxygen due to the abundant vegetation. But if you feel uncomfortable start to take oxygen and rest. I start using oxygen on the bus ride to the cable car station. Once on board the cable car, take a few more breaths of oxygen to prepare your body. After disembarking the cable car, inhale oxygen every few steps.
