Pingwu Bao’en Temple (deep mountain Forbidden City | cultural highlight) A rare Ming dynasty ancient temple made entirely of nanmu wood without a single nail, known as the deep mountain Forbidden City. Inside are exquisite wooden carvings of the Thousand-Hand Guanyin, Ming dynasty murals, rotating sutra wheels, and dragon wall stone carvings. The thousand-year-old nanmu wood fragrance lingers, with very low commercialization and few tourists. The park is flat and easy to walk, suitable for elders and children, making it a hidden cultural and educational treasure. 2. Baxijia Baima ancient village (original Tibetan village) The best-preserved Baima Tibetan ancient village in northern Sichuan, with stone watchtowers and wooden houses built on the mountainside, preserving the most authentic Tibetan rural customs. No tourist traps, simple local customs, immersive ethnic costume and Guozhuang dance experiences, cool and quiet mountain setting, clean and healing photo spots, perfect for family leisure walks. 3. Wanglang Nature Reserve (20℃ summer cool spot) A primitive forest paradise comparable to Jiuzhaigou, lush and green from July to September, with streams, spruces, meadows, and alpine lakes all present. The summer average temperature is only 20℃, with abundant negative oxygen ions. The flat wooden boardwalk is shaded throughout, no sun exposure or mountain climbing required, making it zero-pressure hiking for young children and elders. A hidden gem for summer lung cleansing in western Sichuan. 4. Tianmu Lake A clear alpine lake surrounded by green mountains, with crystal-clear water and continuous mountain views. The viewing platform offers excellent vistas. Few people and quiet scenery with cool evening breezes, perfect for capturing healing mountain and water photos while avoiding summer crowds. 5. Pingwu old town Shengzhi Street A Ming dynasty ancient street with bluestone pavement and vintage city gates. The gentle evening lights and affordable snacks create a lively atmosphere, ideal for a post-meal stroll and relaxation. 🚉 Transportation guide 1. Main transport ✅ Self-driving preferred (best for families) 3.5 hours from Chengdu, 1.5 hours from Mianyang, all on smooth highways with easy mountain roads and beautiful forest scenery along the way, ideal for a short summer escape ✅ Public transport Direct buses from Mianyang/Jiangyou bus stations to Pingwu county, with stable schedules and affordable fares, budget traveler friendly 2. Within the scenic area 1. In the county: Bao’en Temple and ancient streets are all within walking distance, short taxi rides cost about 5 yuan 2. County to Baima ancient village/Tianmu Lake: about 1 hour by car, self-driving or carpooling is most convenient 3. County to Wanglang Reserve: about 1 hour 10 minutes by car, good road conditions with healing scenery along the way 4. All trails in the scenic areas are flat and easy, no sightseeing buses needed, easy on the legs 📌 Notes (July–September summer vacation | family & summer escape) 1. Climate & clothing 1. Pingwu mountain area stays around 20℃ in summer, cool in the mornings and evenings, be sure to bring a light jacket and long sleeves 2. Strong UV in the forest, not hot but easy to get sunburned, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are essential 3. Many mosquitoes in the forest, bring insect repellent in advance 4. Frequent short showers, carry an umbrella or light raincoat 2. Money-saving tips 1. Old town ancient streets and Tianmu Lake viewing platform are all free with no hidden costs 2. Only Bao’en Temple and Wanglang Reserve charge a small entrance fee, with half-price discounts for students and seniors 3. Accommodation is best chosen in Pingwu county guesthouses or hotels, around 100 yuan per night, clean and comfortable, much better value than inside scenic areas 4. Eat at local old shops in the county, beef soup hot pot and farmhouse dishes are generous and affordable without overcharging 3. Family safety tips 1. Some forest boardwalks and ancient village stone paths can be slippery, walk slowly and watch children carefully 2. Do not enter undeveloped wild forest areas or approach wild animals in the reserve 3. Do not climb over railings at lake viewing spots, safety first and be a responsible traveler 4. Pitfall avoidance 1. Avoid roadside private guides and low-cost wild hiking packages, stick to official, regulated routes 2. Local specialty products around scenic areas are overpriced, buy souvenirs at county supermarkets first 3. Mountain roads are slippery after rain in summer, slow down when hiking 5. 2 kilometers of flat trail to see waterfalls, wild lilies paired with wild strawberries, all work stress melts away Ladies, listen up! If your impression of Western Sichuan is still crowded with people and “special forces hiking,” you’re really missing out! This time, I discovered a hidden “off-the-beaten-path treasure” deep in the mountains of Mianyang Pingwu, privately kept by outdoor veterans — Huyagou Grand Canyon. The elevation is almost flat from low to high, with neatly built wooden boardwalks, making it an easy 2-hour round trip. The best part — just a 3-hour drive from Chengdu, tickets cost only a few dozen yuan, no crowded tourists, just roaring waterfalls, crystal-clear streams, wildflowers everywhere, and birdsong accompanying you all the way. After the walk, your ears and eyes will feel completely refreshed! 🌿 1. Why is Huyagou Grand Canyon called the “Yellowstone Park of Sichuan”? Located on the northwest edge of the Sichuan Basin, southeast of the main peak Xuebaoding of the Min Mountains, it neighbors the “Heavenly Pool” Huanglong and faces Jiuzhaigou across the mountains. The entire area covers about 270 square kilometers. Hidden deep in the mountains and rarely visited, it has preserved its original natural scenery through thousands of years, earning the nickname “China’s Yellowstone Park.” Completely flat! Easy 2-hour walk, super friendly for hiking beginners The hike starts from the sightseeing bus drop-off point to the main waterfall, only 2.7 kilometers one way, all on well-maintained flat wooden boardwalks with negligible elevation gain. You can stroll and enjoy, finishing the round trip in under two hours. The whole route is extremely beginner-friendly, perfect for families and those who want a relaxed weekend — “It’s not tiring at all, very suitable for a relaxing weekend with no rush, just pure leisure!” Dalongkou Waterfall: The 25-meter-wide “Valley Treasure,” mist cool enough to lift you off your feet At the end of the boardwalk, the roar of the waterfall is thunderous. Dalongkou Waterfall is 25 meters high and about 50 meters wide, bursting out from a rock cave halfway up the mountain. The main waterfall looks like four white dragons flying down, with dozens of smaller waterfalls hanging like pearl curtains. The mist fills the air, creating a fairyland atmosphere. The mist drifts with the wind, soaking your hair and clothes, forming rainbows in the sunlight — incredibly refreshing and stunning. The well-known science media “Planet Research Institute” once filmed here, calling it the “Northern Sichuan Niagara Falls.” Limited to May-June: Wild lilies + wild strawberries, surprises all along the way From late May to early June, white tung tree petals scatter along the path, wild lilies bloom on the cliffs, and the riverbanks are covered with adorable wild strawberries (for viewing only, please don’t pick). A small bird with a white head and red tail follows you all the way, completely unafraid. On the 3,000-meter-high slope of Tudiliang, thousands of acres of alpine rhododendrons bloom, with century-old wild rhododendrons whose gnarled branches look like paintings, flowers clustering into seas that shine even more brilliantly against the snowy mountains. The “Six Wonders of Huyagou”: Can be enjoyed all year round The canyon, high mountains, and waterfall groups are magnificent, thrilling, and primitively vast. The Huyagou area has six major highlights: alpine rhododendrons, colorful forests, sea of clouds, sunrise, glaciers, and waterfalls, known as the “Six Wonders of Huyagou.” Spring for flowers, summer for coolness, autumn for red leaves, winter for icefalls — each season offers a different experience. 2. How to play? Copy this summer itinerary! Transportation Guide (Driving is king!) 🚗 Self-drive (highly recommended!): Navigate to “Huyagou Grand Canyon.” From Chengdu, take the Jingkun Expressway, about 3 hours to Pingwu County, then a short drive to the scenic area. The road is good, no problem for sedans. 🚌 Shuttle bus: Take a bus from Chengdu Zhaojue Temple Bus Station to Pingwu County, then transfer to a local van to Huyagou Grand Canyon. But driving is more flexible! 🎟️ Ticket reference: About 30-60 RMB per person, half price for children and seniors. Open hours: 9:00-17:00 (last entry at 15:00). ⏰ Best times: · May to October: lush green mountains in spring and summer, colorful forests in autumn · May to June: wild lilies and alpine rhododendrons bloom, wild strawberry season · 9-11 AM: soft light, best for photos One-day highlight route (follow this to avoid getting lost) Morning: Depart Chengdu → Lunch in Pingwu County Leave Chengdu around 8 AM, arrive in Pingwu County around 11 AM. Have an authentic farmhouse meal in town, recommended Long’en Home Cooking: the twice-cooked pork is full of flavor, and the walnut flower stir-fried with cured meat is uniquely tasty. Afternoon: Huyagou Grand Canyon highlights tour (about 2-3 hours) Arrive at the scenic parking lot at noon, buy tickets (including sightseeing bus). Take the sightseeing bus about 5 minutes to the hiking start point (the scenery along the way is already beautiful, sit by the window). Here comes the highlight! From the start, walk along the gentle wooden boardwalk, with babbling streams and birdsong, wild lilies blooming on the cliffs. At the end is Dalongkou Waterfall. The mist hits your face, sunlight filters through the mist creating rainbows, so cool it feels like flying. Photo spots are guaranteed to fill your album: silhouette side shots in front of the waterfall, wildflowers along the boardwalk, and misty rainbow shots by the riverbank. After the visit, you can return the same way and take the sightseeing bus back to the parking lot; or walk about 3 kilometers back along the road, which is even gentler and offers different riverbank and mountain views, very easy to walk. Evening: Return or stay in Pingwu County It’s recommended to return to Chengdu the same night or stay overnight and visit Bao’en Temple the next day. Pingwu County has the Ming Dynasty Bao’en Temple, with exquisite dougong architecture worth seeing. 3. Perfect photo spots + outfit tips Three must-shoot spots · In front of Dalongkou Waterfall: afternoon sunlight through mist creates rainbows, shoot side silhouette for maximum atmosphere · Wildflower clusters along the boardwalk: wild lilies and wild strawberries in May-June, crouch down for forest-style portraits · Riverbank: capture misty shots for a fairy-like vibe Outfit formula · 👟 Non-slip sports shoes are a must! The boardwalk can be slippery, wrong shoes will make you cry · 🧥 Light windbreaker/sun protection jacket: mountain temperature is 5-8℃ lower than the city, and the waterfall mist can soak you · ☀️ Sunscreen + hat: high-altitude UV rays are unforgiving · 🦟 Mosquito repellent: lots of bugs in the mountains · 💧 Bring your own snacks and water: no food or drink sales inside the park 4. Accommodation recommendations If you want to slow down and explore deeply, stay overnight. 🏡 Pingwu Xiangrui Inn (Huyaxiang, best choice at the scenic entrance) Located in Gaoshanbao Village, Huyaxiang, closest to the canyon. Over ten double/triple rooms with private bathrooms, dinner and next-day breakfast provided, parking available, and can arrange whole roasted lamb and horse riding. Perfect for those who want to stay right at the entrance. 🏡 Pingwu Haorui Mountain Villa (Huyaxiang, inside the scenic area) Located inside Huyagou Grand Canyon, on the main routes of the scenic spots. 36 rooms with full facilities, solar-powered heating, spacious parking. You can see the snowy mountains of Huyagou Canyon from the room. The owner is very hospitable. Price range: 100-200 RMB/night. 🏡 Pingwu County Hotels (best value) More options in the county town, recommended Pingwu Long’an Inn, with warm and honest staff. The surprise is a few “gold medal service” cats in the shop, gentle and affectionate. Price range: 150-300 RMB/night. 🏡 Wang Family Tibetan-style Guesthouse Visitors say: “Feels great, very homely, wish I could stay longer, far from city noise.” Experience Tibetan culture and authentic farmhouse cuisine. Final words Huyagou Grand Canyon is not a “trendy check-in spot,” it’s a hidden “heavenly garden” in northern Sichuan, the natural white noise of Dalongkou Waterfall roaring for thousands of years, the early summer romance of wild lilies blooming on cliffs. Here, you can daydream listening to birdsong on a 2-kilometer flat boardwalk, be wrapped in mist under a 25-meter-wide waterfall, and pretend you’re in Switzerland among centuries-old rhododendron seas. Tickets cost only a few dozen yuan, 3 hours from Chengdu, 2 hours to walk without tiring legs — this kind of “slow down” luxury can’t be bought in the city. It is said that standing on the summit of Tudiliang, the clouds roll like a sea, golden light mingling with the distant Xuebaoding — at that moment, you’ll feel “life is worth it.” While the wild lilies are blooming and the waterfall is cool, ladies, just go for it! 💦🌿

Just back from Huya Grand Canyon in Pingwu, Sichuan, and I have to excitedly announce: this is definitely the top hidden gem I’ve discovered this summer! No crowded tourists here, only roaring waterfalls, clear streams, wildflowers everywhere, and birdsong accompanying you all the way. A short and easy 2-hour hike that completely refreshes your ears and eyes, instantly healing the mental fatigue of working life. This freshly prepared, nanny-level guide is for everyone wanting to escape the city and embrace the wild! 📍 Huya Grand Canyon Snapshot: Wild, Cool, Zero Pressure · Location: Pingwu County, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, an ecological treasure town preserving the Baima Tibetan culture. · Core charm: Few tourists, easy hiking, full of wild nature. Almost no elevation gain throughout, suitable for everyone. Late May to early June is the best time—parasol tree flowers just fell, wild lilies and wild strawberries are in season, full of surprises. · How to get there: Must drive yourself, navigate to “Huya Grand Canyon.” From Chengdu, take the highway directly, about 3 hours by car, perfect weekend distance. 🗺️ Super Easy Hiking Guide (Perfectly Replicable) The whole trip is extremely friendly, ideal for beginners, families, and the lazy alike. · Step 1: Transfer to the sightseeing bus · Arrive at the scenic area parking lot, buy tickets (including sightseeing bus ticket, total 30 RMB). Take the sightseeing bus about 5 minutes to the hiking start point. The scenery along this road is already beautiful, so sit by the window. · Step 2: Essential plank road hike (round trip about 2-3 hours) · From the start to the main waterfall is only 2.7 km one way, all on well-built flat plank roads with negligible elevation gain. We walked and played along the way, finishing the round trip in under two hours. · Wild nature along the way: pure white parasol tree petals scattered by the roadside, wild lilies blooming on cliffs, riverbanks full of adorable wild strawberries (for viewing only, please do not pick). A white-headed, red-tailed bird followed us all the way, completely unafraid of people. · Step 3: Arrive at the waterfall and feel the shock · At the end of the plank road, the waterfall roars like thunder. Mist drifts with the wind, soaking hair and clothes, forming rainbows in the sunlight—especially cool and stunning. This is the highlight of the whole trip. · Step 4: Leisurely return (optional challenge) · Easy version: Return the same way to the hiking start point, then take the sightseeing bus back to the parking lot. · Exploration version: On the way back, skip the bus and walk about 3 km along the road back to the parking lot. This route is gentler and offers different views of riverbanks and mountains. We chose this route and found it effortless. 🏡 Food and Accommodation Recommendations: Unlock the Joy of this Hidden Town Pingwu County itself is a surprise, with affordable prices and a peaceful lifestyle. · Food treasures: · Long’en Home Cooking: Twice-cooked pork with a strong aroma, walnut flower stir-fried with cured meat has a unique flavor, authentic Sichuan home taste. · Qingcunjia: Crispy beef, tender inside and crispy outside, seasonal wild vegetable stir-fry is incredibly fresh and worth trying. · Warm accommodations: · We stayed at Long’an Inn, where the staff are warm and sincere. The biggest surprise was the few “gold medal service cats” in the inn, gentle and clingy, eagerly asking for pets, making the stay experience perfect! 💡 Practical Tips from Hard Lessons Learned 1. Best season: May to October. Spring and summer bring lush greenery and blooming wildflowers; autumn paints the forests in vibrant colors. We went in late May and found the weather very comfortable. 2. Gear suggestions: · Shoes: Ordinary non-slip sports shoes are fine, no need for professional hiking boots. · Clothing: Mountain areas have big temperature differences, bring a sun-protective jacket or skin jacket. The mist near the waterfall can easily wet you. · Others: Sun hat, mosquito repellent, drinking water, some snacks. 3. Trip planning: Recommend spending a full day in Pingwu. Depart Chengdu in the morning, arrive in Pingwu County for lunch, spend the afternoon at Huya Grand Canyon (2-3 hours), stay overnight, and the next day visit Bao’en Temple (Ming Dynasty exquisite dougong architecture) or explore other lesser-known spots. 4. Leave no trace: Please take all your trash with you and protect this rare peaceful place. Enjoy wildflowers and fruits by sight only, do not pick. 5. Mindset: There is no noisy commerce here, only pure natural sounds. Slow down, listen to the water, watch the birds—that’s the true meaning of travel. Huya Grand Canyon is like a fairy tale book gently closed, quietly lying in the mountains of Pingwu. It offers us the richest natural gifts in the easiest way. This weekend, if you want a place to quietly walk, daydream, and refresh your lungs, then set off! Huya Grand Canyon

If you can wake up early, head to the Ailao Mountain Sunrise and Sea of Clouds Observation Deck to catch a sunrise over the sea of clouds. The Nan'en Waterfall cascades down from the mountainside right by the road. Entering Shimen Gorge, you'll find streams accompanying the trails, offering a refreshing forest atmosphere. Jiangxi - Wuyuan If you enjoy a lively atmosphere, head to Huangling to see the "Shaiqiu" (autumn harvest drying) and Wunvzhou for the fish lantern parade. The colorful harvest drying displays in autumn are mesmerizing. The surrounding Hui-style ancient villages each have their own unique charm. Likeng features small bridges, flowing water, and traditional homes, with a stream running through the village and ancient bridges and houses scattered throughout. Sixi Yancun is quieter and less crowded, with exquisitely carved old wooden houses. Shangtan Village has large camphor trees by the river and babbling streams. Yantian Village is hidden in the mountains, surrounded by pastoral fields and streams. Zhangcun features a bench bridge spanning the river, set against a backdrop of fields and rice paddies. 6. Zhejiang - Linhai The old town has a rich local atmosphere with very little commercialization. The stone-paved Ziyang Ancient Street winds through the town, lined with old shops. The surface of Linghu Lake is vast, and the autumn breeze blowing across it is very pleasant. Climb the Southern Great Wall for a bird's-eye view of the entire ancient city. 7. Sichuan - Liangshan - Mianning Near Xichang and accessible by highway, this area hides many pristine mountain lakes. The water of Yele Lake is crystal clear, reflecting the snow-capped mountains and clouds. Cattle and sheep roam the meadows, and thin mist covers the lake in the early morning. Menghuocheng, located between Mianning County and Shimian County, features tens of thousands of acres of alpine meadows dotted with red stone beaches, and you can see snow-capped mountains from the beacon tower. The water of Yihai Lake is a deep blue, and the wooden boardwalk around the lake winds through pine forests; a full loop takes about an hour and a half. The moss forest behind Lingshan Temple features tree trunks and stones covered in thick moss, with light filtering through the gaps in the trees. 8. Guangxi - Qinzhou A coastal town on the Beibu Gulf, much less crowded than Beihai. In Qinzhou Old Street, century-old arcade buildings provide shade, and with their colorful glass windows, vintage signs, and carved window lattices, every photo feels like it's from Southeast Asia. Take a boat out to sea from Sanniang Bay, and if you're lucky, you might encounter wild white dolphins. The Sandun Sea Highway is a smooth road that cuts across the blue ocean, allowing you to drive between the sea and the sky. The Bazhaigou Waterfall spreads along the stream, with clear pools perfect for stream trekking and hiking, offering a very refreshing experience.

Many friends on my social media thought I had traveled all the way to the Swiss Alps 🏔. With snow-capped mountains, meadows, fir forests, and crystal-clear lakes all in one place, this uncrowded spot hidden deep in the Min Mountains—the home of the giant panda—is absolutely breathtaking ✨. 🌟 Scenic Area Overview 📌 📍 Location: Baima Tibetan Township, Pingwu County, Mianyang, Sichuan. Located near Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, it is part of the Wanglang area of the Giant Panda National Park. 🌡 Altitude: 2,300–4,900m. The overall altitude is manageable, and most people won't experience altitude sickness. The average summer temperature is around 20°C, making it a perfect summer retreat. 🎫 Admission: The ticket includes a sightseeing bus. You must take the park's sightseeing bus to enter the core area; private cars are not allowed inside. The park is open from 9:00 AM–5:30 PM, with last entry at 2:00 PM. 📸 Must-Visit Spots ✅ 🔸 Ganhaizi Lake 🏞 The star attraction of the park! This is the same spot where Li Ziqi filmed her piano video. There is a 1.4km gentle wooden boardwalk circling the lake, which is easy for all ages to walk. With alpine wetlands, meadows, driftwood scattered on the lake, snow-capped mountains in the background, and forests and streams all in one frame, you can easily capture stunning, Swiss-style photos. The lake water is crystal clear on sunny days and has a cool, forest-like vibe on cloudy days. 🔸 Baishagou Primitive Forest 🌲 Century-old spruce and fir trees tower overhead, the ground is covered in thick moss, and streams babble through the forest, offering an abundance of negative oxygen ions. The hiking trail is about 1.9km long and very easy. You might encounter squirrels along the way, and if you're lucky, protected animals like the Chinese monal. It's an immersive way to walk through a primitive forest and refresh your lungs. 🔸 Tianmu Lake 🌊 Stop by on your way to or from the scenic area! The lake water is a clear blue-green, and you can see yaks grazing along the shore. There's a viewing platform by the lake where you can park and take photos. You can enjoy the stunning lake sunset without even entering the scenic area 🌅. 🔸 Baxiajia Baima Ancient Village 🏡 A village inhabited by the Baima Tibetan people, featuring scattered wooden houses where you can experience a unique minority culture. There is very little light pollution at night, so on clear days, you can see the starry Milky Way. Occasionally, there are bonfire parties where you can try local specialties like yak meat hot pot and honey wine. 🗓 Classic 2-Day Itinerary Day 1: Drive from your location → Stop by Pingwu Bao'en Temple → Check in at Baxiajia Ancient Village. In the evening, visit Tianmu Lake, enjoy a steaming yak meat hot pot for dinner, and gaze at the starry sky ✨. Day 2: Enter Baima Wanglang Scenic Area in the morning → Take the sightseeing bus to Ganhaizi Lake for photos and a stroll → Light hike in Baishagou Forest → Spend 4–5 hours exploring, then head home. 🏕 Accommodation Tips 💤 ▪️ Baxiajia Ancient Village homestays: Many options with good value. Prioritize rooms with floor heating, as the temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is large and it gets very cold at night. ▪️ Giant Panda Exploration Camp inside the scenic area: If you have a sufficient budget, choose this. You can open your window to face the forest and snow-capped mountains. Guests staying here have convenient access to the scenic area, but rooms are limited, so book in advance. 💡 Practical Tips for a Smooth Trip ⚠️ 1. The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is huge! Even in midsummer, bring a thick jacket. If you are visiting in autumn or winter, be sure to bring snow chains, as mountain roads can be slippery and dangerous in rain or snow. 2. This is a wildlife sanctuary, so please do not feed the animals and do not step off the boardwalks into the wild, in order to protect the primitive ecosystem. 3. There are few shops in the core area of the scenic area, so it is recommended to bring your own drinking water and snacks. Restrooms are concentrated at the entrance/exit and the Ganhaizi station, so plan accordingly. 4. Rooms are in high demand on weekends and holidays, so it is recommended to book tickets and homestays online in advance. Try to enter the scenic area early to avoid cloudy weather in the afternoon. You don't need to travel all the way to Europe to experience a mountain fairytale; you can find it right here in Sichuan. It's uncrowded, beautiful, and perfect for a summer getaway, a short road trip, or a light hike 🌿!

If you’re tired of crowded, influencer-driven cities and want a place with local life, cultural depth, and striking landscapes, Mianyang should be on your travel list. As Sichuan’s second-largest city, Mianyang is modest in a way that wins your heart. It’s the hometown of the poet Li Bai, a living center of Qiang culture, home to karst caves carved by nature, and full of street snacks you won’t be able to stop eating. Best of all, 5 days here can be easily enjoyed on about CNY 2,000 per person. Day 1: arrive in Mianyang, start with a bowl of rice noodles Keywords: Yuewang Tower, Iron Ox Square, Majia Lane After arriving in Mianyang, settle your luggage. Stay in Fucheng district if possible—transport is convenient, hotel choices are many, and you can find decent budget hotels for CNY 120 per night. In the afternoon, head to Yuewang Tower first. Admission CNY 50. This is a Tang-dynasty style tower; from the top you can overlook the Fu River and the whole city of Mianyang, with excellent views. There are exhibitions about Mianyang’s history and culture inside, worth a slow walk. From Yuewang Tower, walk to Iron Ox Square. This riverside spot is a favorite local hangout and gets lively at dusk. People dance plaza-style, walk dogs, or sit by the river staring into space. Find a bench and watch the sunset turn the Fu River golden—you’ll feel this is the true rhythm of travel. For dinner, head straight to Majia Lane, Mianyang’s most famous snack street. Must-try items: leng zhan zhan (a skewer-style snack with a soul-making dipping sauce), spring rolls (thin skin, generous filling, bite-sized), and crispy rice-crusted potatoes (crispy outside, tender inside, with a killer numbing-spicy flavor). You can be very satisfied for about CNY 30 per person. Return to the hotel early to rest—the next day starts early. Day 2: stroll the city and feel Mianyang’s slow life Keywords: Fule Hill, Mianyang Science and Technology Museum, Shengshui Temple Go to Fule Hill in the morning; it’s free. This is a Three Kingdoms culture park where Liu Bei once held a banquet when entering Shu. The hill isn’t high; a relaxed 30-minute climb gets you to the top, with pavilions and ancient trees along the way. From the summit you can overlook Mianyang, and on clear days see distant mountain ranges. Have lunch near Fule Hill and try Mianyang rice noodles, a local breakfast staple. The noodles are silky and the broth rich; add pork intestine or beef, and you can be full for about CNY 15 per person. In the afternoon, visit the Mianyang Science and Technology Museum. Admission CNY 30. It has exhibits on spaceflight, nuclear tech, and robotics with strong interactive elements. If you’re traveling with kids, you can spend the whole afternoon here; solo visitors can also learn a lot, like China’s nuclear weapons research history, which is quite striking. At dusk, visit Shengshui Temple, free to enter. This temple is built against the mountain in stacked layers and is very imposing. The statues and architecture feel historical, and the temple is active with worship. At sunset, the sun on the temple’s golden roof is especially photogenic. In the evening, try a different guesthouse for a local experience—guesthouses by the Fu River are recommended at about CNY 150 per night, with a river view from the window. Day 3: the poet’s hometown, visit Li Bai and Douquan Mountain Keywords: Li Bai’s hometown, Douquan Mountain Take a coach from Mianyang bus station to Jiangyou, about 1 hour, fare CNY 20. Jiangyou is Li Bai’s hometown and a highlight of this itinerary. In the morning, tour Li Bai’s hometown site. Admission CNY 40. The park includes Li Bai’s former residence, Taibai Hall, and a stele forest; the atmosphere is tranquil and elegant. Walking through, you’ll naturally recall lines like “bright moonlight before my bed” and “I raise my cup to invite the moon.” Poetry fans can easily spend 2 hours here. Have lunch in Jiangyou city and try Jiangyou-style pork intestine, a local specialty. The intestine is well cleaned and braised until tender and flavorful; with a bowl of rice you can eat well for about CNY 25 per person. In the afternoon, head to Douquan Mountain. Admission CNY 67, round-trip cableway CNY 50. The mountain isn’t very high, but its strange peaks and rocks are striking. There’s an iron suspension bridge at the top that sways as you walk, which is thrilling. The summit offers wide views of fields and villages—great for photos or zoning out. Take the coach back to Mianyang at dusk and stay in the city. Day 4: Qiang village life, feel Beichuan’s resilience and warmth Keywords: Beichuan Qiang town, earthquake ruins, bonfire party Take a coach from Mianyang bus station to the new Beichuan county town, about 1 hour, fare CNY 20. Beichuan is a Qiang autonomous county and was heavily hit by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Today’s Beichuan is a newly rebuilt town rising from the ruins, full of resilience and hope. Visit the Beichuan Qiang town tourism area in the morning; it’s free. Spend time on Bana Cha commercial street, where many Qiang specialty shops let you try Qiang embroidery, taste zajiang wine, and buy Qiang handicrafts. Qiang embroidery is brightly colored with distinctive patterns; buy a small embroidered piece as a souvenir for about CNY 20. Have the Qiang “nine big bowls” at a local household for lunch, about CNY 40 per person. Recommended dishes include cured spare ribs, buckwheat noodles, and potato cakes—authentic flavors. The Qiang people are warm hosts and will offer you a toast during the meal; receive it with both hands as a local courtesy. In the afternoon, visit the May 12 Wenchuan earthquake memorial museum, free to enter but bring an ID. The museum is thoughtfully built, and the exhibits and footage are powerful. After visiting, you may have a deeper appreciation for life. Then go to the Old Beichuan earthquake site; you’ll need to charter a car or share a ride, about CNY 30 per person. The site preserves the quake’s original appearance—collapsed houses and distorted rebar that are shocking to see. It’s not a place for photos, but it’s worth a quiet walk to reflect. Stay overnight in a Beichuan Qiang village guesthouse; “Qiang village on the cloud” is recommended at about CNY 100 per night. The guesthouse is a typical Qiang stone house with strong character. They often organize a bonfire party in the evening with free participation. Join the locals in the Sarang dance around the fire—the joy you feel is genuine. Dinner at the guesthouse is Qiang hotpot, about CNY 35 per person, served with barley cakes—simple and comforting. Day 5: high mountain adventure, the wonders and thrills of Jiuhuang Mountain Keywords: Jiuhuang Mountain, Ape King Cave, Lover’s Bridge Charter a car from Beichuan to Jiuhuang Mountain Scenic Area, about 40 minutes; shared rides cost about CNY 20 per person. Admission plus front-mountain cableway CNY 160, back-mountain cableway CNY 80 optional. The front cableway is recommended to save energy. The front mountain mainly features Ape King Cave, a huge karst cave with imaginative stalactites that look magical under lights. The cave is cool, around 15°C, so bring a light jacket. A full walk-through takes about 40 minutes; the paths can be slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. After the cave, walk the Lover’s Bridge, a high suspension bridge spanning two peaks. Walking on it with the abyss below and the bridge swaying in the wind is exciting. If you’re timid, hold the railing and go slowly; if you’re bold, take photos—the shots will be great. If you have the energy, go up the back mountain. There you’ll find a Qiang culture park, a grass-ski slope, and the option to try paragliding for an extra CNY 280. Paragliding requires good weather, so book in advance if you want to try it. Have Qiang snacks in the park at lunch, about CNY 25 per person—roasted potatoes and corn cakes are simple but tasty. In the afternoon, descend and take the high-speed train from Jiangyou station back to Mianyang, 20 minutes, fare CNY 20. Plan your return based on your schedule, or stay one more night and leave the next day. Budget breakdown Accommodation: 4 nights about CNY 600 (3 nights in the city CNY 450 + 1 night in Beichuan CNY 150) Meals: 5 days about CNY 500 (CNY 100 per day, flexible) Tickets: Yuewang Tower CNY 50 + Science Museum CNY 30 + Li Bai’s hometown CNY 40 + Douquan Mountain CNY 67 + Jiuhuang Mountain CNY 160 + cableway CNY 80 (optional) Transport: city and intercity travel about CNY 200 Other: souvenirs, snacks, etc. about CNY 150 Total: about CNY 1,847, leaving room to upgrade accommodation or try paragliding. Practical tips Transport: coaches from Beichuan to Mianyang run every 30 minutes, last bus at 6:00 PM—watch the schedule. The Old Beichuan site requires chartering a car, about CNY 100 per car; you can share with other travelers. Clothing: caves in Jiuhuang Mountain are about 15°C, bring a light jacket. Beichuan has many mountain roads, wear non-slip shoes. Customs: don’t step on door thresholds in Qiang villages, receive toasts with both hands, and respect local customs. Time optimization: if short on time, Jiuhuang Mountain’s front mountain (Ape King Cave and Lover’s Bridge) is enough—skip the back mountain. At night in Beichuan, don’t miss the new town square to watch the Qiang Sarang dance; it’s free and more healing than any scenic spot. Food recommendations: Mianyang rice noodles, Jiangyou pork intestine, Qiang nine big bowls, leng zhan zhan, and crispy rice-crusted potatoes—don’t miss these. This route ties together Mianyang’s local life, Three Kingdoms culture, the poet’s hometown, Qiang customs, and geological wonders into a budget-friendly, rich experience. If you have more time, you can also visit Baohua Temple in Pingwu or the Qiqu Mountain Grand Temple in Zitong—both are off-the-beaten-path but worth a visit.

Many people traveling to Jiuzhaigou or Huanglong pass through Pingwu, but few actually stop for Bao'en Temple. I was dragged in by a local friend, but as soon as I stepped inside, I was blown away: red walls, ancient cypress trees, blue-tiled roofs, multi-layered eaves, and a quiet atmosphere free from commercialization—it felt like walking into a "mini Forbidden City" hidden in the mountains. If you love ancient architecture, red-wall photography, and quiet, off-the-beaten-path spots, Bao'en Temple is worth carving out half a day for during your Jiuzhaigou or Huanglong trip. 📍 Highlight 1: The ancient architecture is incredibly photogenic Bao'en Temple was built during the Ming Dynasty, over 600 years ago. The entire complex is laid out along a central axis, with the mountain gate, bell tower, drum tower, main hall, Mahavira Hall, and Wanfo Pavilion arranged in sequence. The roofs feature deep blue glazed tiles, the walls are a warm vermilion, and the eaves and brackets are layered in intricate detail. My favorite view is the depth from the mountain gate looking inward; the layers of eaves and doorways create a natural frame. Standing anywhere along the central axis, you can capture the feeling of "wandering through a painting." 📸 Photo Spot 1: The mountain gate central axis Don't rush after entering the mountain gate; this is the most classic spot in Bao'en Temple. Stand at the steps outside the gate and shoot slightly upward to capture the red walls, blue tiles, and layered eaves all at once. After entering, shoot inward along the central axis for a strong sense of depth. I recommend wearing white, beige, black, or "New Chinese Style" clothing, which pairs perfectly with the red walls and blue tiles. 📸 Photo Spot 2: The red-walled path by the bell tower There is a particularly beautiful section of red wall near the bell tower, lined with ancient trees and greenery. Sunlight filtering through the leaves onto the red wall creates atmospheric, dappled light and shadows. This spot is perfect for half-body or back-view shots. Don't stand too centered in front of the wall; shifting slightly left or right makes the composition feel more relaxed. If it's a sunny day, I recommend coming between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM for soft light and the most vibrant red wall color. 📸 Photo Spot 3: In front of the Mahavira Hall terrace The Mahavira Hall is the heart of Bao'en Temple. The spacious terrace in front is perfect for grand portraits with the ancient architecture. You can stand on the side of the terrace, using the steps, railings, and eaves to create layers for a solemn feel, or sit on the steps for a more casual photo. Avoid overly dramatic poses here; being quiet, natural, and slow will result in better photos. 📸 Photo Spot 4: The side corridor of Wanfo Pavilion The area around Wanfo Pavilion is great for photos focusing on details and atmosphere. The combination of corridors, wooden windows, stone pillars, plaques, and ancient trees captures the charm of an ancient temple. I recommend using medium close-ups to capture a side profile, a hand on the railing, or a smiling glance back. Alternatively, have a companion stand at the end of the corridor while you shoot from the other end to create a cinematic sense of depth. 📸 Photo Spot 5: Under the ancient cypress trees There are many lush, ancient trees in Bao'en Temple. Standing beneath them gives photos a sense of the "millennial temple" history. You can capture a shot of someone looking up at the canopy, or a back view standing beside the tree, with the red walls or ancient eaves in the background for a clean, timeless look. This spot is best for low-saturation, natural-light photos. 📸 Photo Spot 6: Side doors and archways by the red walls Beyond the main halls, many of the side doors and archways in Bao'en Temple are beautiful. The archways between the red walls act like picture frames; standing in the doorway with the layered eaves in the background adds great depth. I suggest shooting from an angle rather than always standing directly in the center; a diagonal angle adds more narrative to the shot. ✨ Highlight 2: The details of the wood carvings, stone carvings, and Buddha statues are worth a slow look Bao'en Temple doesn't just "look ancient"—the wood carvings, stone carvings, Buddha statues, and paintings inside are all worth seeing. Wanfo Pavilion contains many Buddha statues and exquisite wooden components. The pillars, beams, and brackets inside the halls all carry a sense of history. If you love history and architectural details, you'll want to linger here. I suggest not just checking off the exterior; take some time to go inside and look slowly, soaking in the solemnity and quiet of the ancient temple. ✨ Highlight 3: It's quiet and uncrowded, perfect for a slow stroll and atmospheric photos Compared to popular tourist spots, the pace at Bao'en Temple is much slower. There are no overly commercialized shops or crowded throngs of people, making it perfect for a quiet walk. I spent about 2.5 hours wandering and taking photos without feeling rushed. If you're tired from returning from Jiuzhaigou or Huanglong the day before, a "light walking, heavy sightseeing" spot like Bao'en Temple is perfect to include in the middle of your itinerary. ⚠️ Tip 1: Don't just treat it as a "stopover" Many people treat Bao'en Temple as a quick stopover when returning to Pingwu County from Jiuzhaigou or Huanglong, staying for only half an hour. My advice is not to do this; reserve at least 2 hours. The real beauty isn't just in taking a photo of the mountain gate; it's in slowly walking the central axis, photographing the red walls, admiring the architectural details, and sitting for a while by the ancient trees and corridors. ⚠️ Tip 2: Pay attention to opening hours and rules inside the halls Ancient temple sites usually have specific opening hours, and there may be etiquette requirements for visiting the halls. It's best to confirm the opening status for the day before you arrive. When entering the halls, respect the on-site rules: do not speak loudly, and do not take photos of Buddha statues or artifacts without permission. Try to use natural light when taking photos and avoid using flash. ⚠️ Tip 3: Sunny days are more photogenic, but avoid shooting at noon The red walls and ancient architecture of Bao'en Temple are especially beautiful on sunny days. However, the midday sun is too harsh, which can easily overexpose the red walls and cast shadows on faces. It's best to shoot before 9:00 AM or after 4:00 PM when the light is soft and the colors are warmer. If you can only go at noon, focus on shooting the corridors and details in the shade. ⚠️ Tip 4: Keep your outfit simple The red walls and blue tiles are already very vibrant, so I recommend choosing white, beige, black, gray, navy blue, or "New Chinese Style" elements for your outfit, and avoiding overly busy or bright colors. I personally think white is the safest choice, as it really stands out against the red walls; black adds a more cinematic feel. ⚠️ Tip 5: Accommodation in Pingwu County is more comfortable than you might think If you are traveling to or from Jiuzhaigou or Huanglong, I suggest not rushing back to Mianyang or Chengdu; you can stay one night in Pingwu County. Dining and accommodation in the county are quite convenient, and you'll be more relaxed visiting Bao'en Temple the next day. You can try local rice noodles or pasta for breakfast, and have some tea in the county in the afternoon—the whole pace will be much more comfortable. Address: Bao'en Temple, Pingwu County, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province Recommended visit time: 2–3 hours Best time for photos: Before 9:00 AM / After 4:00 PM Suitable for combining with: Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong, Baima Wanglang, and tours around Mianyang Recommended outfits: White, beige, black, "New Chinese Style," simple long dresses

🔥If you are traveling to Western Sichuan for the first time, Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong are must-visit attractions. One is a "fairytale world," and the other is a "fairyland on earth." The scenery in late autumn is breathtaking. Four days is the perfect amount of time to explore both comfortably. Follow this guide and get started! . ✅Day 1: Chengdu – Pingwu – Jiuzhaigou 🎈Pingwu Bao'en Temple: Known as the "Forbidden City in the deep mountains," the entire temple is made of wood without a single nail, yet it has been perfectly preserved for over 600 years. It is said that there are 9,999 dragons throughout the temple. 🎈Baima Wanglang Scenic Area: A hidden gem near Jiuzhaigou. The reserve is home to rare animals like giant pandas, white-lipped deer, and golden snub-nosed monkeys. It is especially worth visiting in autumn when the mountains are covered in vibrant autumn colors. . ✅Day 2: Jiuzhaigou day trip: Arrow Bamboo Lake – Panda Lake – Five Flower Lake – Peacock Riverbed – Pearl Shoal – Mirror Lake – Multi-Colored Pool – Nuorilang Waterfall 🎈Arrow Bamboo Lake and Mirror Lake: Filming locations for Zhang Yimou's movie "Hero." The Arrow Bamboo Lake Waterfall is layered and cascading, while the surface of Mirror Lake lives up to its name—it is stunning for taking reflection photos. 🎈Panda Lake: Giant pandas often wander here to drink and forage. You can see stripes on the water's surface, making it a fantastic spot for photography. 🎈Five Flower Lake: Located in the middle section of Rize Valley in Jiuzhaigou, the water is colorful. This is the area with the most concentrated autumn foliage, and Tiger Rock is the perfect spot for panoramic shots. 🎈Pearl Shoal: A filming location for the ending of "Journey to the West." It looks beautiful from every angle. 🎈Multi-Colored Pool: A small lake in Jiuzhaigou. It is said that if couples walk down the steps to the edge of the pool, make a silent wish, and then climb back up the 189 steps, they will love each other for a lifetime. 🎈Nuorilang Waterfall: A massive travertine waterfall in China with powerful water flow that echoes through the valley. . ✅Day 3: Jiuzhaigou – Huanglong – Songpan ➡️Welcome Pool – Flying Waterfall Flowing with Radiance – Lotus Terrace Waterfall – Bathing Cave – Golden Sand Pavement – Bonsai Pool – Mirror Reflection Pool – Rhododendron Colorful Pool – Stunning Colorful Pool – Huanglong Ancient Temple – Five-Color Pool 🎈Welcome Pool: The pools are exquisite and unique, but unlike those in Jiuzhaigou, the water here is a darker blue-green. 🎈Stunning Colorful Pool: A cluster of colorful pools in Huanglong Valley, and the most vibrant in terms of color among the travertine landscapes of Huanglong. 🎈Five-Color Pool: A must-visit attraction in Huanglong, truly a fairyland on earth. The altitude of Huanglong is between 3,200–3,600 meters. Once inside the scenic area, it takes about 4–5 hours to hike through Huanglong. Depending on your physical condition, you can choose to hike both up and down, or take the cable car up and hike down. . ✅Day 4: Songpan – Maoxian – Chengdu · Diexi, Maoxian · Ancient Qiang City: Here you can experience the authentic architectural style, folk customs, and sacrificial rituals of the Qiang people. · Jiuding Mountain · Beichuan Earthquake Ruins · Yaowang Valley . Tips: 🍂Bring your ID card and health code to enter the scenic area. 🍂Inside Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area, there is a bus service that allows you to hop on and off at any station. 🍂If you are worried about altitude sickness, you can take precautions in advance. You can buy anti-altitude sickness supplements locally; they are a bit pricey, but they really work! I do not recommend buying oxygen or oxygen water, as they can be addictive, and the more you use them, the less effective they become.

Listen to some honest advice before coming to Mianyang in September 🥲. Don't just rush here because you saw blue skies and white clouds in travel guides. The weather forecast for those few days showed showers turning to light rain, with temperatures around 18–28°C, and humidity that will make your hair frizz 💇‍♀️. On my first day, I foolishly wore white sneakers to walk around Xianhai, and as soon as the stone path got wet, I slipped. By the time I got back to the hotel, my heels were blistered—it was so miserable I wanted to break down right there. Mountain areas like Jiuhuangshan, Yaowang Valley, and Doucuanshan are even more unpredictable; sunny mornings and rainy afternoons are the norm. A raincoat is more useful than an umbrella. Don't be as silly as I was and just bring a sun umbrella up the mountain; I didn't realize until I got to the cable car entrance that I was soaked to the bone while waiting in line, which was miserable and made for terrible photos. For food, I followed the locals' path and didn't hit any major landmines 🍜. For breakfast, go for Mianyang rice noodles—either the spicy beef or pork intestine broth is fine. The thin noodles soak up the broth perfectly, and pairing them with a guokui (flatbread) will wake you right up. Go to Ma Jia Lane in the evening for lengzhanzhan (cold skewers); you dip the skewers into chili oil, and they're so cheap you don't have to worry about ordering too much. Try the spring rolls, jelly noodles, and oil tea, but don't order everything if you have limited stomach space. Definitely save a meal for Jiangyou pork intestines; the braised version is soft and glutinous, while the stir-fried version is fragrant. You can easily eat two bowls of rice with it 🍚. On the Beichuan route, try the cured meat and Qiang-style potatoes. When eating farm-style meals near Yaowang Valley, don't order expensive wild game; the local free-range chicken, seasonal vegetables, and tofu are the safest bets. For souvenirs, just buy Zitong crisp cakes, Beichuan old cured meat, or Zhongba soy sauce. I don't recommend buying the loose, unbranded pickles at tourist spots; I found out the hard way that they get damp and you'll regret it. I've ranked the photo spots based on a lazy traveler's aesthetic 📸. For Yuewang Tower, wear light-colored Hanfu or a long dress. Climb the tower in the evening to see the Fuling River lights; the Tang-style pillars and the reflection on the river make for great portraits on your phone. If you don't want to buy a night ticket, just take photos of the lights in the outer square—it saves on admission and is worth it. Cycle a bit around Xianhai Lake; the lakeside boardwalk, reed banks, and small piers are the most gentle spots. Shoot in the morning when the mist hasn't cleared for a forest vibe, or in the afternoon with backlighting for a hair-light effect. Fule Mountain is free, and the stairs to the pavilions aren't tiring. In late September, you'll get the scent of osmanthus, which pairs well with floral outfits. The Science and Technology Museum has a modern exterior, perfect for taking cool, science-themed photos with kids. For Jiuhuangshan, only take photos of the Cloud Qiang Village, cable car, cave lights, and glass bridge; don't bother with the animal attractions. Walk the forest trails and flower paths at Yaowang Valley. September isn't the peak blooming season for magnolias, so don't set your expectations too high, but the greenery and mountain mist are enough to fill nine photos. My itinerary is the "non-exhausting" version 🚗. Day 1: Stay in Fucheng. After rice noodles in the morning, go to the Science and Technology Museum (book in advance for free). The wind tunnel and VR don't have long lines. Have a light lunch at Ma Jia Lane, take a walk at Fule Mountain in the afternoon, see the river from Yuewang Tower in the evening, and take a stroll around Sanjiang Peninsula at night. Day 2: Head toward Jiangyou (high-speed train or taxi are both fine). Visit the Li Bai Memorial Hall to see the stele forest and old residence. Have pork intestines for lunch. In the afternoon, see the strange peaks and cable car at Doucuanshan. If you're afraid of heights, don't force yourself to do the iron chain projects; my colleague's legs went weak and they had a breakdown. Taking the sightseeing car around is also quite nice. Day 3: Choose one of two options. If you want to relax, go to Xianhai for a lake loop and a small boat ride. If you want to go into the mountains, head to Jiuhuangshan or Yaowang Valley to take your time photographing the caves, Qiang villages, and flower paths. Check reviews on Trip.com before buying cable car package tickets; don't get swayed by on-site sales pitches. If you have an extra day, add the Bao'en Temple in Pingwu; the Ming Dynasty wooden architecture is very peaceful and perfect for those who dislike crowds. Finally, a few life-saving tips to avoid pitfalls 🙃. Don't buy useless guided tour packages at Yuewang Tower; reading the text and photos on Trip.com is enough. Glass walkways, sightseeing cars, and cable cars in mountain areas are charged separately. Take a screenshot of the package contents before booking, or you'll have a breakdown when they ask for extra money on-site. Car rentals at Xianhai on September weekends will have lines, so I suggest going on a weekday morning. Popular old pork intestine shops in Jiangyou have fast turnover at lunch, but you'll have to wait if you go late. For accommodation, choose the Fucheng Linyuan or People's Park area so you can walk to Yuewang Tower and Ma Jia Lane. Don't book so-called "river view rooms" without looking at real photos; I once booked a "river view" room that was three streets away and almost cried at how stupid I was. Overall, bring a light jacket, waterproof shoes, and a foldable raincoat. Don't pack your itinerary too full; Mianyang is best enjoyed by slowly slurping noodles and taking photos. Rushing through attractions is just asking for a miserable time.

[Pingwu Bao'en Temple main hall] is a national key cultural relic protection unit. It is the central building of Bao'en Temple, five bays wide and four bays deep, with a total area of about 570 square meters, the hall is 19.56 meters high, and it is a double-eaved xieshan-style structure. The center of the hall floor is inlaid with 15 square meters of glazed decorative tiles, and the tile surfaces feature shallow relief carvings of cloud motifs and mythical beasts, giving a solemn and resplendent impression. On the sumeru pedestal altar are enshrined the three bodies of the Buddha. The central figure is the dharmakaya Buddha, Vairocana, the left is the sambhogakaya Buddha, Lushena, and the right is the nirmanakaya Buddha, Shakyamuni. All three statues are clay sculptures covered with gold leaf, with full, serene faces, eyes half lowered in a slight smile, seated in the lotus position on lotus bases. Behind them are elaborate and exquisite aureoles decorated with auspicious clouds, mythical beasts, and flame patterns. The overall statuary is solemn and compassionate, with superb craftsmanship, reflecting the high artistic standard of Ming-dynasty Buddhist sculpture. In the center of the main hall is a nine-dragon memorial tablet carved from wood and inlaid with gold thread. It is inscribed with "May the reigning emperor live ten thousand years," and was erected during the Jingtai era of the Ming dynasty by Wang Jian, the eldest son of Wang Xi, who funded the rebuilding of Bao'en Temple in gratitude for imperial favor. The tablet's wording is highly astute: by not naming a specific emperor, the blessing "ten thousand years" applies to successive sovereigns across dynasties and thus remains effective regardless of regime change. It both expresses respect and cleverly helps ensure the temple's long-term peace.

I was truly blown away by the Ming Dynasty craftsmanship upon entering Bao'en Temple❗️ A complete ancient Ming Dynasty temple hidden in the deep mountains of northern Sichuan. The entire complex is constructed from Phoebe zhennan wood, without a single nail or rivet. Stepping into Wanfo Pavilion, my eyes were immediately captured by the massive murals on the second floor. Having weathered hundreds of years, the colors may be mottled and peeling, but the gilding still shines brilliantly. Bodhisattvas, Heavenly Kings, divine generals, and Arhats—the figures are vivid, their robes flowing, and the brushwork is delicate. Every inch of the wall is art shaped by time. The hall is full of surprises. The ingenious revolving sutra cabinet, with its intricate wooden pavilions and coiled dragons, is a true masterpiece of wood carving. The Ming Dynasty colored sculptures are striking in their variety; the Thousand-Armed Guanyin is solemn and majestic, while the guardian deity statues are imposing. The level of detail is incredible. Red walls, ancient halls, layered dougong brackets, and stone tablets engraved with stories of the past—every step offers a new view, and everywhere you look, you'll find relics of the Ming Dynasty. It's not overly commercialized, allowing you to quietly gaze at the 600-year-old architecture, murals, and statues. For those who love ancient architecture and cultural relics, this place is truly worth a special trip.🌿 ▫️Travel Tips ✔️ The lighting on the second floor of Wanfo Pavilion is dim. Please do not use flash to protect these precious cultural relics. ✔️ Touching the revolving sutra cabinet, murals, and colored sculptures is prohibited. Please visit respectfully. ✔️ The temple is large. Allow 3–4 hours to stroll slowly and appreciate the details. ✔️ The temperature difference in the mountains is significant, so pack accordingly.

A national treasure of a Ming Dynasty temple hidden in a county town. The entire temple is built from golden nanmu wood. You don't need to travel all the way to the capital to experience the serene atmosphere of red walls and ancient architecture. It's quiet and uncrowded, perfect for relaxing and clearing your mind. Cultural enthusiasts can follow this itinerary directly. 🗓️ Relaxed half-day itinerary (no rushing) ▪️ 09:00 Enter the park | The second floor of Wanfo Pavilion offers a vantage point to overlook the entire central axis of the temple. The red walls and blue tiles are all in view. The morning light is soft, making it easy to capture stunning empty shots. ▪️ 09:40 Dabei Hall | See the temple's treasure: the Thousand-Hand Guanyin carved from a single piece of wood. The craftsmanship is breathtaking. Photography is not allowed inside the hall, so just take a moment to appreciate it quietly. ▪️ 10:20 Huayan Hall | Check out the revolving sutra repository. This massive wooden structure can be gently rotated clockwise. Experience the ingenuity of ancient architecture, but please don't push it forcefully. ▪️ 11:00 Stroll through the Mahavira Hall and the Imperial Stele Pavilion. Look closely at the various carved patterns on the beams and pillars. There are details everywhere, so take your time to wander and soak in the charm of the ancient temple. ▪️ 12:00 Have a local specialty lunch in the county town. ▪️ 14:00 The alley outside the red walls and the corners of the temple's outer walls are great for taking photos with an ancient vibe away from the crowds. Afterward, you can head back at a leisurely pace. 🍜 Food list | Authentic local flavors ✅ Pingwu Rice Noodles: The gold standard for local breakfast. The broth is rich, the portions are generous, and it's a daily staple for locals. ✅ Buckwheat Jelly: Tangy, spicy, and refreshing with a chewy texture. You can find this affordable snack at small street-side shops. ✅ Fujiang Tofu Pudding: Tender and firm, dipped in spicy seasoning—a simple, rustic, and comforting taste. ✅ Pingwu Cured Meat: Rich in flavor and great with rice. Most local restaurants serve it. ✅ Longzhou Taozao: A traditional intangible cultural heritage snack. Sweet, sticky, and delicious. You can buy some as a small treat. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls 1. When navigating, search directly for "Pingwu Bao'en Temple." Don't just search for "Bao'en Temple" to avoid ending up at the wrong location. 2. The halls are areas with precious cultural relics. Flash photography is prohibited. Do not touch the beams, pillars, or murals, and do not climb on the railings. Please help protect the ancient architecture. 3. It is highly recommended to listen to a guided tour. It's hard to understand the stories behind many of the carvings on your own, and it will greatly enhance your experience. 4. Try to come in the morning when there are fewer tourists and better light. During holidays, visitor numbers increase, so visiting off-peak will provide a better experience. 5. Do not trust the high-priced incense and candle vendors at the entrance. The temple itself has no mandatory requirements for burning incense. 🚗 Transportation | Accommodation | Outfits ▪️ Transportation: Driving is the most convenient. It takes 1.5 hours from Mianyang, and there is a free parking lot at the entrance of the county town. For public transport, take a bus to Pingwu County. After getting off, it's a ten-minute walk to the scenic area. The mountain roads have many curves, so please drive slowly. ▪️ Accommodation: Prioritize staying in Pingwu County. There are many chain hotels and affordable homestays within walking distance of the temple, making dining and shopping convenient. Rooms fill up quickly during holidays, so remember to book in advance. ▪️ Outfits: New Chinese style, plain-colored long dresses, and light-colored clothing go perfectly with the red walls and ancient architecture. Choose comfortable flat shoes, as there are many stone paths in the temple grounds. 💡 Practical tips The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is significant. Even in summer, it is recommended to carry a light jacket and take sun protection measures. This is not a noisy, commercialized tourist attraction. Slow down your pace and calm your mind to experience the tranquility of the ancient temple—that is the true meaning of this trip. It is suitable for friends traveling together or for a solo getaway, and the overall cost is low.

Golden hours for photos: 8:30 AM opening time (zero tourists in photos), 4:30 PM–6:00 PM. Warm lighting on the red sandalwood walls creates a fantastic atmosphere. 2. No need to hire a guide: Free electronic guides explain the history of wood carvings, murals, and the revolving sutra repository; volunteer guides are also available free of charge during holidays. 3. Private cars are not allowed in the core area of Baima Wanglang; you must take the scenic area shuttle bus. Visitor flow is limited during peak season, so be sure to book your tickets in advance through the official WeChat account. 4. The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is extreme; even in summer, bring a light jacket; bring a raincoat during the rainy season, as the mountain winds can easily damage umbrellas. 5. Don't buy local specialties in the scenic area stores; cured meat and wild mushrooms are half the price at the county town's vegetable market.

Starting from Meishan, I hit the gas and dove into a 600-year-old kingdom of nanmu wood, only to be melted by Mianyang's 40°C heat the next day🔥 This 3-day, 2-night trip really left a lasting impression! 📅 Day 1 Meishan → Pingwu | Dragon Palace in the Deep Mountains Arrived in the afternoon and headed straight to Bao'en Temple. ✨Highlights at a glance: · The entire temple is made of golden nanmu with mortise-and-tenon joints. It hasn't rotted or been eaten by insects in nearly 600 years. A faint woody scent greets you at the entrance · Thousand-Hand Guanyin: Carved from a single thousand-year-old nanmu log, 9 meters tall, with 1,004 hands on the back. Each palm is carved with a wisdom eye. I was speechless just looking up at it🙏 · Rotating Sutra Repository: An 11-meter, seven-story Ming Dynasty masterpiece that can still be rotated by hand. A fusion of Tibetan and Han styles—the sutra rotation is a Tibetan ritual, but the repository itself is a Han-style pavilion architecture with dougong brackets and flying eaves, all held together by mortise-and-tenon joints. The two cultures are perfectly integrated; it was so impressive I couldn't help but applaud👏 · There are nearly 10,000 dragon motifs in the temple, truly living up to the name "Dragon Palace in the Deep Mountains." · Two workers next to the Heavenly King Hall were smiling so happily—so Sichuan~ 🎫40 yuan, spent 1.5 hours exploring, and still wanted more. Moved on to the Pingwu Museum and got a real lesson: Tusi (chieftains) weren't exclusive to ethnic minorities! Pingwu was once territory ruled by Han Tusi. The gold jewelry craftsmanship unearthed from the Wang Xi Tomb is identical to the heritage series from a certain famous jewelry brand. The ancients had such advanced aesthetics✨ Dinner was Huixiangfang Beef, so good~ 📅 Day 2 Pingwu → Mianyang | The shock of 25°C → 40°C 7 AM mountain market (on the river embankment), wild mushrooms, kiwis, figs—came back fully loaded🥝🍄 Stopped by Jiangyou Pass (newly rebuilt, just a quick check-in). Took the national highway to the Li Bai Memorial Hall. The journey along the way was the highlight—green mountains, clear waters, and terraced fields, like stepping into a landscape painting. As for the memorial hall... it's a small park, skippable unless you're a die-hard fan. Lunch was Jiangyou pork intestine! Chewy and bouncy, perfect with rice🍚 Arrived in Mianyang in the afternoon, 25°C → 40°C, melted on the spot🥵 Shengshui Temple + Luohan Temple. Having just come from Bao'en Temple, the contrast was a bit stark. But the Pingyang Fujun Que (tomb gate towers) are a treasure! National Heritage Site No. 003, one of the best-preserved double-tower tomb gates in existence. Fule Mountain (where Liu Bei met Liu Zhang when entering Shu). The view from Fule Pavilion at the top is excellent. It was too hot, so I decisively took the scenic shuttle (8 yuan one way) to save myself🚌 Night tour of Mianyang, watched the light show at Yuewang Tower from afar, strolled through Majia Lane to eat "lengzhanzhan" (cold skewers). The dipping sauce was amazing! It was super crowded, couldn't even move~ 📅 Day 3 Mianyang → Return trip | Ending with greenery Xishan Park. As soon as I entered, I was struck by the beauty of the layered carved doorways. Shaded by green trees, I strolled through Ziyun Pavilion and visited Jiang Wan's tomb, finally finding a bit of coolness. Stopped by Deyang for lunch, finished with a dry pot, perfect. There was the awe of ancient architecture, the warmth of local life, and the fear of being dominated by the high heat—that's travel, the good and the bad make it memorable.
