Muli travel guide and discussion

Known as the "Garden Browsed by God" by Joseph Rock, Muli, hidden deep in the Daliang Mountains, offers few crowds, stunning scenery, and mostly free admission! You must visit Shangri-La Lake; missing it would be a real regret! 💰 Budget Reference | Affordable for students too · 🚗 Transportation: Departing from Xichang, a road trip is the most comfortable option, with fuel and tolls costing 300–500 per car. If you don't want to drive, you can take a bus to Muli County and then charter a car. The mountain roads have many curves, so beginners should be cautious. · 🏏 Accommodation: Tibetan-style hotels/inns in Muli County cost 130–280/night, with complete facilities for peace of mind. There are a few homestays by the lake with basic conditions; prioritize staying in the county for comfort. · 🍲 Dining: Choose from Sichuan or Tibetan cuisine in the county, averaging 50–85 per person. Be sure to try the local free-range chicken. Restaurants are scarce near the remote lakes, so bring your own snacks and drinking water. · 🎫 Admission: Shangri-La Lake, Kangwu Monastery, and Manachajin are all free! No pressure on your wallet 🐂 👉 3 days and 2 nights for 900–1,300 per person, offering great value for a niche hidden gem. 📍 Must-Visit Treasure Spots 💧 Shangri-La Lake (Cundong Haizi/Chang Haizi) The soul landmark of Muli❗ At an altitude of about 3,650m, the magical floating meadows drift with the wind, like green islands floating on the turquoise lake surface—a unique "thousand-island" landscape that is truly breathtaking. In May–June, alpine rhododendrons bloom all over the mountains; in September–October, the autumn scenery is divine, with mountain forests reflecting on the lake—stunning photos straight from the camera without filters 🐄. You can take a slow walk around the lake, watch yaks grazing, or sit by the lake and zone out; the whole experience is healing. ✅ Navigation: Search for "Shangri-La Lake." It's about 35km from the county seat, a drive of about 50 minutes on well-paved asphalt roads. 🏯 Kangwu Monastery Very close to Shangri-La Lake, so you can visit them together. An ancient Tibetan Buddhist monastery nestled between mountain forests and meadows, with quiet, simple golden roofs and very few visitors. Photography is prohibited inside the main hall. Remember to walk clockwise around the prayer wheels and respect local customs. 🏔 Manachajin Viewing Platform Muli's ultimate viewing platform! You can overlook three sacred mountains at once. If you wait for the sunrise and the "golden mountain" cloud sea in the early morning, the magnificent scene will leave you speechless. ⚠️ Altitude is 4,300m+, and the wind is howling. Do not jump or run to prevent altitude sickness, and be sure to bring warm clothing. 🗓 Recommended Itinerary | 3 Days 2 Nights Relaxed Version Day 1: Xichang → Muli County Arrive in the county and check in. Take it slow to acclimate to the altitude and avoid strenuous exercise. Stroll through the streets to experience the local Tibetan atmosphere, stock up on dry food and supplies, and enjoy a hot Tibetan meal in the evening before resting well. Day 2: Muli County → Shangri-La Lake → Kangwu Monastery Depart in the morning for Shangri-La Lake, spend 3–4 hours walking around the lake and taking photos. Visit Kangwu Monastery on the way back in the afternoon, and return to the county in the evening to rest. Day 3: Muli County → Manachajin → Return Wake up early and head to Manachajin to wait for the sunrise and the "golden mountain" view. After seeing the sacred mountains and the sea of clouds, head back. ⚠️ Top Priority❗ Essential Travel Tips 1. 🫁 Altitude Sickness: Muli is generally at a high altitude. Slow down your movements upon arrival, don't run or jump, have oxygen canisters and glucose ready, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and sit quietly to rest if you have a mild headache. 2. 🧥 Clothing: The temperature difference between day and night on the plateau is extreme. Even in midsummer, bring a windbreaker/light down jacket. Sunglasses, hats, high-SPF sunscreen, and lip balm are essential, as the UV rays are extremely strong. 3. 📸 Photography: The light is soft from 9–11 AM and 4–6 PM, which is best for shooting the lakes and snow-capped mountains. Overlooking Shangri-La Lake from a high point makes it easier to capture that "surface of the earth" atmosphere. 4. 📶 Signal: There is no mobile signal in some mountainous areas, so be sure to download offline maps in advance. Watch out for falling rocks and landslides during the rainy season, and try to avoid driving at night. 5. ♻️ Responsible Travel: The plateau ecosystem is fragile, so take all your trash with you. Ask for permission before photographing local residents, and follow etiquette in monasteries to show respect for local customs.

In early September, I set off from Xichang with 2 friends, with a total cost of CNY 420 per person. The focus is on niche, authentic travel in Muli, Liangshan. No rushing, no tourist traps, just an immersive experience of Tibetan scenery and authentic food. This entire post is based on my personal experience, packed with practical tips, and perfect for beginners to follow. [Muli Monastery (Taoba Village, Wachang Town, Muli Tibetan Autonomous County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province) 9:30 AM–12:30 PM] Transportation: Take a licensed bus from Xichang to Muli County, which takes about 5 hours, then share a licensed chartered car to the monastery, which takes about 2.5 hours. The mountain roads are winding, so an SUV is recommended. A full-day charter costs CNY 500–700, which can be split by sharing the ride. Admission: Free, no reservation required. If a temporary reservation is required, only use official channels. Things to do: In early September, autumn arrives on the plateau, bringing morning mist and views of the monastery's golden roof against the distant mountains. A must-see is the gilded bronze statue of Maitreya Buddha. Photography is prohibited inside the hall; please remove your hat, stay quiet, and walk clockwise. The viewing platform behind the mountain is about a 15-minute walk away, offering a panoramic view of the monastery and the valley, perfect for photos. Personal tips: The altitude is about 2,637 meters, so altitude sickness is unlikely. Spend 2–3 hours here. Wear flat shoes, and ensure your shoulders and knees are covered when entering the hall. Do not speak loudly. [Taoba Tibetan Village (Taoba Village, near Muli Monastery) 2:00 PM–5:00 PM] Transportation: About a 10-minute walk from the monastery. Things to do: This is an authentic, hidden Tibetan village known to locals. Stroll along the village paths to see the white-walled Tibetan houses, highland barley racks, and distant mountains. In early September, the highland barley is ripe, making it a great time to photograph the autumn harvest scenes in the village. Practical tips: Very few tourists, so you can avoid tour groups. The afternoon light is soft, which is best for capturing the layers of the white walls and distant mountains. There are few supplies in the village, so bring your own water. [Main Street, Qiaowa Town, Muli County 6:00 PM–8:00 PM] Transportation: About 2.5 hours back to the county town from the monastery. Highlights: The county town is quiet and relaxing in the evening. Take a walk along the main street to experience the local Tibetan atmosphere. Tips: Stick to the main roads at night and travel in groups. The best time for sightseeing is half an hour before and after sunset. Must-try local food (personally tested) 1. [Yak hot pot] Full address: Tibetan restaurant on the main street of Qiaowa Town, Muli Tibetan Autonomous County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province (in the city center, can be found on navigation apps). Average cost: CNY 60–80. Must-order signature dish: Yak hot pot with wild mushrooms. Honest review: The broth is rich and flavorful, the yak meat is firm and chewy, and the authentic taste of plateau ingredients really stands out. Perfect for warming up in autumn. 2. [Butter tea + Tsampa] Full address: Tibetan guesthouses around Muli Monastery, and Tibetan restaurants on the main street of Qiaowa Town, Muli County. Average cost: CNY 15–25. Must-order signature dishes: Handmade butter tea, highland barley tsampa. Honest review: The butter tea is rich and warming, and the tsampa is very filling, making it suitable for breakfast or as a snack on the go. Complete practical guide Transportation guide: Take a licensed bus from Xichang to Muli, which takes about 5 hours. Attractions within the county are scattered, so it is recommended to ask your hotel to recommend a licensed driver for carpooling. Do not take unlicensed vehicles. Accommodation recommendation: It is best to choose the central area of Qiaowa Town in Muli County, where you can walk to restaurants and the station. It is clean and convenient, suitable for leisure travel. Remote areas are not recommended. Honest tips to avoid pitfalls: 1. Refuse private tour guides soliciting at the entrance of the scenic area and low-price promotions. 2. Do not buy overpriced local specialties on the roadside. 3. Use official channels for ticket reservations. 4. Avoid holiday peaks for a better experience. Travel essentials: The temperature difference between day and night on the plateau in September is large, so bring a light jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable flat shoes, a power bank, and a portable water bottle. This trip was relaxing and healing, with a slow pace. It was niche and uncrowded, the food was great, and it offered good value for money. It is suitable for leisure travelers who want to avoid the crowds, and beginners can follow this itinerary directly.

The three snow-capped mountains line up without any obstruction, creating a spectacular and breathtaking view. 2️⃣ Shangri-La Lake (Cundong Haizi) — An alpine turquoise gem with floating meadows 🌊 Located at the top of Kangwu Mountain at an altitude of 3,404 meters, this 5,000+ mu alpine lake looks like a piece of turquoise. The floating meadows sway with the waves, and on sunny days, the prayer flags and snow-capped mountains are all reflected on the lake surface. 📸 Photo Tips: Shoot from a low angle next to the prayer flags by the lake. Have the person stand at the edge of the meadow to capture the snow-capped mountains, lake, and reflection in one frame. Every shot is wallpaper-worthy ✨. 3️⃣ Muli Monastery — A famous Gelug (Yellow Hat) sect monastery in Tibet 🏯 Built in 1656, this Yellow Hat monastery with red walls and golden roofs is hidden deep in the valley. It was visited by Joseph Rock and is one of the three major monasteries in Muli. 📸 Photo Tips: Shoot upwards at the red walls and golden roofs in front of the main hall, or use the door frame of the scripture hall as a natural frame. Wearing Tibetan clothing adds an incredible atmosphere to your cultural photos. 4️⃣ Kangwu Monastery — The "Summer Palace of the Living Buddha" amidst the meadows 🌿 Built in 1604, it mimics the Sera Monastery in Lhasa, featuring golden roofs, white pagodas, and exquisite murals. Backed by snow-capped mountains and meadows, it is the second-largest monastery in Muli. 📸 Photo Tips: Use a telephoto lens on the meadow to capture the golden roof and snow-capped mountains in the same frame, or take close-ups of the prayer wheels for a full Tibetan vibe. 🗺️ 3-day, 2-night itinerary (lazy travelers, just copy this) Day 1: Arrival, acclimatization + lake scenery Xichang → Muli County (approx. 4 hours by bus) → Afternoon: Charter a car to Shangri-La Lake (Cundong Haizi) for a walk around the lake and to see the floating meadows → Evening: Explore the county town, eat Tibetan snacks, and stay at a hotel in the county. Tibetan steamed buns come with fillings like butter, air-dried yak meat, and milk dregs—authentic, rustic flavors. · Eya stinky fish soup: A traditional Naxi snack unique to Muli. Sunscreen + sunglasses + lip balm are essential. · 💊 Altitude sickness: Manachajin is at an altitude of 4,300+ meters. Prepare Rhodiola and oxygen tanks. Do not wash your hair or engage in strenuous exercise on the first day. · 📶 Signal: Mobile signal is weak in most deep mountain areas. Be sure to download offline maps before you set off. · 🎫 Admission: Most attractions are free. Don't be tricked into buying expensive package tickets. 💡 Honest thoughts: Muli isn't the kind of place where you "check in and leave." Its beauty lies in its slowness, quietness, and primitiveness. 3 days is just enough to touch its soul. Don't rush your itinerary. Wake up early to see the sea of clouds, drink a bowl of butter tea in the afternoon—this is the right way to experience Muli.

Deep in the Daliang Mountains, within the folds of the Hengduan Mountains, lies a land known as the "Source of Shangri-La." It is quiet, vast, primitive, and natural. Simply approaching it, you can hear the echoes of the earth, as if a breeze has blown away all distractions and noise. Standing before Kangwu Monastery, listening to the unfamiliar Sichuan dialect, I saw the purity of this land in the eyes of the monks. Cundong Haizi, which means lake guarded by gods in Tibetan. Clear light caresses the textures of the forest, and wildflowers add splashes of color. In the distance lie the footprints of dreams and the call of the gods. I had no time to fully take it in, so I greedily pressed the shutter. If a lake is a tear of the earth, it must be a tear of happiness. 📍 Muli Tibetan Autonomous County · Cundong Haizi & Kangwu Monastery Accommodation recommendation: City Life Hotel | City Life Hotel (Xichang Moon Lake Wetland Park Branch)

The mountain roads have many curves and some sections are bumpy, so it is not recommended for novice drivers to go alone. 🌤️ Weather and clothing: Highland weather is changeable, and the temperature difference between day and night is extreme. Even in summer, bring a thick jacket or windbreaker. Prepare sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun and wind. 🩺 Altitude sickness prevention: The Manachajin Viewing Platform is at a high altitude, so avoid running or jumping vigorously. Prepare oxygen canisters and glucose in advance. Mild altitude sickness is normal; sitting quietly and resting will help relieve it. 🍜 Food and accommodation: There are few supply points in the towns along the way, so prepare drinking water, snacks, and dry food in advance. For accommodation, prioritize Muli County and Guzeng Township, where facilities are relatively better. 📸 Photography time: The light is softest from 9:00–11:00 AM and 4:00–6:00 PM. This is the best time to photograph snow-capped mountains, ancient temples, and lakes. Don't miss the sunset glow at Manachajin. 🙌 Cultural etiquette: When entering temples, do not speak loudly, touch Buddha statues, or step on prayer flags. Respect local Tibetan customs and travel responsibly. 🛞 Driving safety: Highland mountain roads are winding, and some sections have no signal. Download offline maps in advance, drive slowly within speed limits, do not occupy the wrong lane, and do not rush. Safety first.

Hidden in the mountains and rivers, Muli is a true earthly paradise✨. This small city in western Sichuan, hidden deep in the Daliang Mountains, is the utopia that Joseph Rock longed for—a pristine land that rivals Daocheng. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, clear alpine lakes, quiet ancient temples, and rustic villages, it has no crowds, only the pure gentleness of the mountains and healing scenery. 📸 Must-visit attractions 1. Muli Monastery 🛕 The most iconic ancient Tibetan Buddhist temple in Muli. Founded in 1656, it is the largest Gelug sect monastery in Muli and a highly popular landmark with a 4.8 rating. With golden roofs and red walls set against blue skies and white clouds, the exquisite thangkas and wood-carved murals inside are full of texture. Surrounded by white stupas and open lawns with distant mountains as a backdrop, the atmosphere is both solemn and healing. Open all day for free. Please keep quiet when entering the temple, and do not touch religious artifacts or take photos loudly. 2. Shangri-La Lake (Cundong Haizi) 💙 A stunning, lesser-known alpine lake in Muli and the ultimate romantic destination for countless travelers. The clear lake water is nestled among alpine meadows, with scenery that changes with the seasons: wildflowers everywhere in spring and summer with emerald green water, and golden vegetation with a tranquil lake surface in autumn and winter. With the reflection of snow-capped mountains in the water, every shot is wallpaper-worthy. It is perfect for light hiking, camping, relaxing, and watching the sunrise and sunset. 3. Kangwu Monastery 🏞️ An ancient temple hidden deep in the alpine meadows, quieter and less crowded than Muli Monastery, with a 4.7 rating. The golden-roofed architecture stands out against the vast grasslands and green mountains. With lush vegetation and open views, and free from commercial noise, it is perfect for a quiet stroll, taking photos, and immersing yourself in the slow pace of Tibetan life. 4. Waerzhai Monastery 🪷 A century-old ancient temple hidden in the primitive mountain forest. It is rustic, niche, and rarely visited, preserving the most primitive Tibetan religious style. Surrounded by a sea of forests, it is quiet and peaceful, making it perfect for travelers who enjoy deep cultural experiences and niche exploration. It is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle, heal, and de-stress. 5. Eya Ancient Village 🏡 An original ancient village hidden deep in the mountains, it is the last settlement of the Naxi people. The entire village is built against the mountain, with wooden houses stacked layer upon layer in an orderly fashion. Interwoven stone paths preserve ancient folk customs and a strong sense of daily life. It is perfect for cultural photography and experiencing authentic rural life. 👔 Outfit & photography tips 1. Outfit: The temperature difference between day and night on the plateau is huge. You need to bring a windbreaker and a thin down jacket regardless of the season. Prepare a long-sleeved jacket for summer and thick, warm clothing for winter. Light white, beige, and navy blue clothing fit well with snow-capped mountains, lakes, and ancient temple scenes, making for great photos. 2. Photography: The light is softest from 9–11 AM and 4–6 PM. Take atmospheric portraits at ancient temples, panoramic healing shots by the lake, and relaxed lifestyle photos in the meadows. No filters are needed as the natural texture is great. ⚠️ Essential tips 1. Altitude sickness prevention: Muli is at an altitude of 3,000m+. You can drink Rhodiola rosea 3 days before departure. After arriving, avoid strenuous exercise, drink plenty of water, and drink less alcohol. Stay relaxed and don't be anxious. 2. Weather protection: The ultraviolet rays on the plateau are extremely strong☀️. Be sure to take sun protection measures and prepare sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and lip balm to avoid sunburn and dryness. 3. Respect local customs: Take off your hat when entering temples, do not touch Buddha statues, and do not take photos of monks without permission. Respect local Tibetan and Yi customs and travel civilly. 4. Travel safety: There are many curves and speed limits on mountain roads, so do not speed or occupy the lane. Be cautious when driving on mountain roads during the rainy season and avoid going to undeveloped wild attractions. 5. Eco-friendly travel: Muli's ecology is fragile. Practice leave-no-trace travel throughout your trip: do not litter, do not pick wild plants, and do not damage the natural landscape. The beauty of Muli is unpolished purity and the gentleness hidden deep in western Sichuan. Get away from the crowds, head to this earthly Shangri-La, watch the silent snow-capped mountains, listen to the whispers of the lakes, and heal all your fatigue in the breeze of the ancient temples. This is the true meaning of travel🌿.

I'm sharing a fantastic route I took last year that spans Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, focusing mainly on the Hengduan Mountains. It's a visual feast with rich experiences, and I highly recommend it. You can plan for a trip between Oct 25 and Nov 5. The best window for autumn foliage can vary slightly each year depending on the weather, but based on most experiences, the last few days of October are generally the best time. The detailed route plan is as follows (with practical tips): 🍁Day 1: Dali – Lugu Lake 🎈Must-visit recommendation: Waiting Coffee at Lugu Lake. The second floor has a huge panoramic viewing window. If you don't like running around, just sit here for an afternoon and take in the lake view; you'll have absorbed the essence of Lugu Lake. 🍁Day 2: Lugu Lake – Daocheng Yading (Lu-Ya Route) The specific route is the Yalu Road – Provincial Highway 220 – National Highway 227, also known as the Lu-Ya East Line. The total distance is less than 300 km. Before 2024, it was notoriously difficult to traverse, but now it is basically paved with asphalt all the way. However, the road is narrow with many curves. It takes 6–7 hours to cover less than 300 km, so be sure to leave Lugu Lake as early as possible to avoid driving at night. Also, try to avoid rainy or snowy weather. 🎈Recommended stops along the way: Mana Chajin Viewing Platform, Muya Monastery. You can stay directly inside the Daocheng Yading Scenic Area at night to maximize your sightseeing efficiency for the next day and enjoy the morning mist. There are many hotels and homestays open in Yading Village now, catering to all budgets. 🍁Day 3: One day in Yading Scenic Area Tips: If you aren't looking to do the long trail, one day is enough. The essence of Yading lies in the combination of snow-capped mountains, canyons, colorful forests, streams, and pastures—it's absolutely top-tier autumn scenery. For how to reach the best viewing spots quickly, refer to my pinned post. In summary, it's basically a mix of long and short trails. You'll get the highlights and it's definitely worth the trip. As for Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake, they are suitable for those who are physically fit, determined, have a "since I'm here, I might as well" attitude, and want to challenge themselves. 🍁Day 4: Yading – Deqin Meili Generally, take G227 to G214 National Highway. Along the way, you will pass Xiangcheng, Maowu Grand Canyon, the Jinsha River Bend, and Benzilan, with diverse climate changes. Although the travel time is long, the changing scenery along the way is never boring. 🎈Must-visit recommendation: When passing near Xiangcheng, I saw a particularly beautiful pasture, so I stopped the car and walked deep into it. Streams, Tibetan houses, small wooden bridges, golden hillsides, and herds of cattle and sheep formed a grand pastoral painting of golden autumn. Nature truly has the power to soothe the soul. 🍁Day 5: Deqin Meili – Baima Snow Mountain – Tacheng The highlight of this day belongs to Baima Snow Mountain. Although it was a pity not to see the sunrise over Meili Snow Mountain in the morning, at the insistence of our guide, we took the old G214 National Highway through Baima Snow Mountain. In late October and early November, the mountains are covered in gold, which is visually stunning. Like Daocheng Yading, it's a place I definitely want to visit again in autumn. 🎈Add navigation point: Pillow Basalt Landform 🍁Day 6: Tacheng – Shangri-La Tacheng was an impromptu addition to the itinerary, and it was a pleasant surprise. It's a very comfortable and relaxing place. In the early morning, I drank coffee at the homestay while watching the clouds and mist swirling in the valley. In the morning, I went to the Yunnan Snub-nosed Monkey National Park, and in the afternoon, I visited the Lapu Winery for a tasting. It was a very peaceful day. 🍁Day 7: Relaxing at the Shangri-La Ren'an Pasture Hotel

After seeing crowds everywhere in Western Sichuan, I finally found a truly non-commercial, wild lake in Muli, Liangshan. It has a very healing original name: Cundong Haizi. Unlike the cookie-cutter scenery of Daocheng or Jiuzhaigou, the most amazing thing here is that the meadows across the entire lake surface move with the wind every day. There is no fixed scenery; every visit offers a unique, exclusive landscape just for you. 🌿 Why is it one of a kind in Sichuan? An alpine lake at an altitude of over 3,600 meters, surrounded by mountains and primitive forests. Patches of green meadows look like floating land, scattered across the clear lake surface. As the wind blows, the meadows slowly drift, gather, and disperse, with the lake water shimmering along with them. On sunny days, the blue sky, white clouds, and mountain forests are all perfectly reflected on the lake, blending water and sky into one. Autumn is even more stunning, with the meadows turning a warm golden hue, creating a golden, shimmering water surface that is incredibly atmospheric. There are no admission tickets, shops, amusement facilities, or crowded tourists. Without the need for social media filters, what you see with your own eyes is the most beautiful scenery. Quiet, ethereal, and healing, it is a rare, relaxing hidden gem on the plateau. 📸 Comprehensive travel guide (based on real experience) 1. Best time to visit: 3–5 PM The light is gentle and not harsh, the lake reflections are clearest, and you don't need to edit your photos at all. 2. Best season ✅ May–June: Wildflowers bloom by the lake, with fresh, lush greenery everywhere ✅ September–October: Full autumn vibes, incredibly healing 3. Photography tips Phones can't capture its vastness, so if you have a drone, definitely fly it! Only from a high-altitude perspective can you see the stunning pattern of the "green puzzle" across the entire lake. ⚠️ Important safety reminder (must read!) Many people don't know this! There are deep underwater currents beneath the floating meadows. ❗ Do not step on them, do not go onto the islands, and do not walk close to the lakeside meadows. Viewing from a distance is beautiful enough—safety first! 🚗 Complete travel tips | Perfect for beginners 📍Address: Muli, Liangshan · Shangri-La Lake (Cundong Haizi) 🎫Admission: Free ⏰Duration: 1.5–2 hours is enough, perfect for sitting quietly, daydreaming, and watching the wind move the lake 🛣️Transportation: About a 1.5-hour drive from Muli County, with many winding mountain roads ✅Be sure to fill up your gas tank before leaving; there are no gas stations or convenience stores along the way ✅Signal is weak in the mountains, so download offline maps in advance ✅The altitude is high and the wind by the lake is freezing! Bring a thick jacket regardless of the season, and walk slowly to prevent altitude sickness ✅Prepare all supplies, snacks, and hot water in the county town ✅Leave no trace. Take all your trash with you and protect the pristine scenery 💭 Travel thoughts I've seen many still lakes, but this is the first time I've seen a "living lake." When the wind changes, the scenery changes; when the wind rises, everything flows. There are no noisy crowds here, only mountains, wild fields, a gentle breeze, and the lake water. If you are tired of crowded tourist hotspots and want to find a quiet, healing, and unique hidden gem, come to Muli Shangri-La Lake and witness the gentle, drifting beauty of the plateau🌿

September is the most underrated month for travel—the summer heat has faded, airfares have dropped, and tourist attractions are no longer crowded. And Muli, a place deep in Western Sichuan where even GPS might lead you astray, is just right in September. 🌲 What is Muli? It is a Tibetan autonomous county in the Liangshan Prefecture of Sichuan, located deep in the Hengduan Mountains, separated from Lugu Lake by just one mountain. It is known as "Sichuan's last Shangri-La"—a title that gets overused, but Muli truly deserves it. The average temperature in August is 15–24°C, and it gets a little cooler in September. Wear a long-sleeved shirt during the day and bring a jacket for the mornings and evenings. 🍂 Why September? Three reasons. First, fewer crowds. The summer vacation crowds have retreated. Daocheng and Seda are still packed with people, but Muli remains quiet. You might be one of the only few people at the entire attraction, so you won't have to wait to take photos or make way for others while walking. Second, the meadows are perfect. The meadows at Cundong Haizi (also known as Chang Haizi) are still green in September but are starting to turn yellow—a mix of green and gold that has more depth than pure green. The floating meadows on the lake drift with the wind, like miniature islands sailing slowly. Third, high visibility of snow-capped mountains. The rainy season ends in September, and the air is clear. From the Manachajin viewing platform, you can see the snow-capped mountains spread out before you like an oil painting, and if you are lucky, you might even see the "golden mountain" at sunrise. 🗺️ A three-day itinerary (no high-intensity hiking required) Day 1: Arrival + Muli Monastery Arrive in Muli County and acclimate to the altitude. In the afternoon, visit Muli Monastery—a magnificent Tibetan-style monastery with rows of white pagodas. Sit on the steps outside the monastery and wait for the sunset. The highland sun makes the temple shine, and the breeze carries the scent of yak butter. Day 2: Cundong Haizi Dedicate the whole day to Cundong Haizi. The road around the lake is flat and easy to navigate; you can drive or take a leisurely walk. The lake reflects the surrounding mountains, and cattle and sheep graze by the shore. Find a patch of grass, sit down, and watch the floating meadows drift slowly across the lake. Doing nothing at all is a perfect way to spend the afternoon. Day 3: Kangwu Monastery + Departure In the morning, visit Kangwu Monastery, which is even quieter than Muli Monastery and surrounded by alpine pastures. In the afternoon, buy some local highland specialties—yak butter, dried yak meat, saffron—and then head back at a leisurely pace. 🏨 Where to stay? Stay in Muli County. The accommodations aren't luxurious, but they are clean, warm, and have hot water. It gets chilly at night in September, so guesthouses will provide electric blankets. 🍵 What to eat? Mainly Tibetan cuisine. Yak butter tea with tsampa is a staple. You might not be used to it the first time you try it, but by the third day, you might get hooked. Yak meat hot pot is the highlight—the meat is cut into large chunks, the broth is rich, and it is served with local wild vegetables. You'll be warm all over after eating it. You can find it in small shops in the county town; no need to specifically look for "internet-famous" restaurants. 📌 A few reminders Altitude: Muli County is at an altitude of about 2,300 meters, and Cundong Haizi is a bit higher. Most people will be fine, but avoid strenuous exercise. Transportation: Renting a car or driving yourself is recommended. The distances between attractions are significant, and public transportation is not convenient. Sun protection: The UV rays on the plateau are strong. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential. Signal: There is no signal on some road sections, so download offline maps in advance. A final thought In September, Muli's grass hasn't fully turned yellow, the snow hasn't fallen yet, and the tourists haven't flooded in. It is in the most awkward yet beautiful transition period of the year—the summer heat has dissipated, autumn colors haven't arrived, and it is as quiet as if the world has forgotten it. And this "being forgotten" is exactly the most luxurious thing right now.
