Hey😎, in this magical place called Yunnan, there's a super niche ancient town🎇, so niche that it can't get any more niche😜! No tickets needed🎫, it's peaceful and serene, with few people around, making it a paradise for travelers🤩!
This is Mojiang Bixi Ancient Town🏯!
Bixi Ancient Town was originally named Bishuo, a name that symbolizes the green mountains and tranquil atmosphere🎄, so poetic😃. There are clear streams flowing on both the east and west sides🌊, with a fertile field in front of the village👨🌾 and lush green mountains behind🏞, hence the name 'Bixi'.
✈️Public Transportation
1️⃣Take a train to Mojiang Station🚂, and at the bus stop on the left side of the exit square, you can take a minibus🚌 for just 5 yuan, which takes about 15 minutes to reach the entrance of the First Middle School. Haha, it's hard to get a Didi ride here😅, but if you're super lucky, you might catch a car that's just dropping off passengers.
2️⃣After getting off, the old bus station is right across the street, no sign, just a place with many parked cars😜. Take the bus from Mojiang to Bixi, get off at the terminal, it costs 7 yuan one way, and takes 15-30 minutes. The bus is a bit old, so be prepared😝.
3️⃣Then return the same way, and you can try booking a ride to the train station🚉 once you reach the county town.

Mojiang Confucian Temple
It was initially built in the first year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty (1821). Facing northeast and southwest, it covers an area of about 7,600 square meters. The layout is built along the mountain, with a lower front and a higher back, divided into five levels: the front is the main gate, the second level has the new building, the Five Classics Tower, the third level has the symmetrical Chongwen Pavilion and Kui Xing Pavilion, the fourth level has the east and west rooms, the Xiangxian Temple, and the Zhongxiao Temple; the fifth level has the Dacheng Hall and the Chongsheng Temple, among others. The Dacheng Hall has a Daoist-style pavilion that is 20.5 meters wide and 14.4 meters deep, with a lifted beam wooden structure and a double-eaved mountain roof. It is one of the larger and better-preserved Confucian temple complexes in southern Yunnan.
Mojiang Confucian Temple was initially built in 1821 (the first year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty), and it has been 199 years since then, covering an area of 7,600 square meters, with a construction area of 2,959.09 square meters. Mojiang Confucian Temple is one of the grandest ancient architectural complexes in southern Yunnan, located in the special geographical position of the Kunming-Bangkok International Corridor. It is an important historical and cultural landscape of our county, a blend of Confucian culture with Hani culture, and a continuation of the returning culture and twin culture, playing a significant role in the cultural development of Mojiang tourism. In 1986, it was announced by the People's Government of Mojiang Hani Autonomous County as a county-level cultural relics protection unit. In 1998, it was listed by the Yunnan Provincial People's Government as the fifth batch of provincial key cultural relics protection units, and in 2019, it was announced by the State Council as the eighth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

Mojiang | Tropic of Cancer Marker Park
| Tropic of Cancer Marker Park.◾️ Mojiang belongs to Pu'er City and is an essential stopover from Kunming to Xishuangbanna and Pu'er City. Mojiang is an extremely niche travel destination with two quite unique titles: the City of Twins and the City where the Tropic of Cancer Crosses.
◾️ The Tropic of Cancer is not a line that truly exists; it is the northernmost boundary of the Earth's surface directly illuminated by the sun, an imaginary line of latitude. When the sun's direct rays move from the south to this latitude, they turn and head back south, hence the name Tropic of Cancer. The Tropic of Cancer is also known as the Summer Solstice Line, as the sun's rays almost directly hit the Tropic of Cancer on the day of the summer solstice, making it the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The Marker Park features a series of poles of varying heights, and on the day of the summer solstice, the phenomenon of 'no shadow at noon' can be observed.
◾️ The Mojiang Tropic of Cancer Marker Park is built around the main axis of 23 degrees 26 minutes north latitude. Located on the west side of Mojiang County, it is a nationally famous 4A-level scenic area and is currently one of the largest and most comprehensive Tropic of Cancer marker parks. The Tropic of Cancer passes right through the center of the square and archway, marking the boundary between the tropics and the North Temperate Zone. Standing on this line, one step south is the tropics, and one step north is the North Temperate Zone, which is quite a marvelous thing to think about.

The tranquil Bixi ancient town
Passing through Bixi ancient town, I saw an uncle selling pig's trotters and elbows at the small market at the entrance of the town. Since the previous night at the Mojiang Twin Towns Fish Hotpot, where the pricing was 1 kilogram = 1 market jin, I specifically asked about the price. The uncle was talkative and honest, and he straightforwardly said he didn't play those tricks, it was just 70 yuan for 1000 grams. I bought a jin of elbow meat in a big bag, and following the uncle's directions, I went to the town's tofu shop, where 5 yuan got me a big bowl full of tofu pudding, which could be dipped in either salty and spicy sauce or just sugar. Eating the pork elbow meat with the dipping sauce on the side was incredibly delicious.
The ancient town was originally the county seat of Mojiang, not very large, and could be walked around in about fifteen minutes. Several old houses preserved as attractions are in good condition, among which the most famous is the Li Xiushan residence, which was once the headquarters of the Self-Defense Army, and 'Yu Family's Former Residence', which is the ancestral home of the Taiwanese singer Harlem Yu. There are not many tourists in the town, and as you stroll leisurely, what you see is the breath of life.

I spent the Spring Festival in warmth, strolling through the Confucian temple and guessing lantern riddles in Mojiang, where the scenery is beautiful with few people, and it's free
To avoid the cold, I flew from the north to the south and spent the Spring Festival in the warmth of various places in Yunnan. The Confucian temple in Mojiang is beautiful with few visitors and free of charge, highly recommended for a visit‼️
In the once inaccessible Ailao Mountains in Mojiang, it's amazing to find such a spectacular Confucian temple hidden deep within. It's truly astonishing and comforting. Celebrating the Spring Festival here by paying respects to Confucius and guessing lantern riddles is also very meaningful.
The Mojiang Confucian temple is located on the sixth peak of the 'Ninefold Serial Pearls' to the northeast of Mojiang County, overlooking the city dam. With its majestic and solemn architecture, the temple is a rare sight. Built over 200 years ago, it represents the Central Plains culture in this southern Yunnan border area, predominantly inhabited by ethnic minorities and distant from the Central Plains culture. The temple complex is well-arranged with strict standards, featuring upturned eaves with bright tiles, and beautifully carved beams and painted rafters between the door lintels and eaves, which are very rare. In 2019, it was announced as the seventh batch of 'National Protection'. Highly recommended for a visit‼️
The temple faces south with its back to the north and is built against the mountain, covering an area of about 7,600 square meters, with a construction area of about 2,960 square meters. It was first built in the first year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty (1821), took ten years to complete, and was finished in the tenth year of Daoguang. It has been repaired multiple times to form its current scale.
🌈Highlights:
✅The main buildings run along the central axis, with the rest symmetrically arranged on both sides: including the main gate, Pan Pool, shadow wall, east and west Pan officials, scripture hall, Meng hall, Lingxing gate, Chongwen pavilion, Kuixing pavilion, Xingxiu gate, east and west pavilions, Xiangxian temple, Minghuan temple, east and west Wu, side halls, Dacheng hall, and Chongseng temple, totaling 21 cultural relic buildings.
✅The layout of the Confucian temple is precise and ingenious, situated on six levels of terraces, connected by 198 steps. The materials used for construction are exquisite, and the decorations are beautiful, featuring regional architectural styles. It is one of the most complete ancient buildings in the southwest of Yunnan.

Crossing the Tropic of Cancer, I arrived at the place where the sun turns around
Mojiang, a place known as 'the place where the sun turns around.' It has always haunted my dreams, and today I finally made it here.
The Tropic of Cancer passes through Mojiang County, hence it is also known as 'the home of the Hani, the city of the Tropic, and the home of twins.'
The Mojiang Tropic of Cancer Marker Park, located to the west of Mojiang County town and themed around 'Tropic of Cancer culture,' is one of the largest and most comprehensive Tropic of Cancer marker parks in the world.
The scenic area is planned and designed with novelty and style. From the foot of the mountain to the top, there are sequentially built: the Gate of Return, the Sun Path, Kuafu Chasing the Sun, Stone Circle, Transcendence, Sun and Moon Brilliance, Sundial Timing, Sun Viewing Tower, Main Marker Pavilion, Gemini Square, Planetarium, Stonehenge Square, Hani Fire Taking Platform, West Gate Scenic Steps, Moon Square, and other 15 groups of attractions.
The Tropic of Cancer, also known as the Summer Solstice Line, is the northernmost boundary on Earth where the sun's rays can shine directly, approximately at 23°26'N (generally estimated to be 23.5°).
The Tropic of Cancer is a latitude line with multidisciplinary significance in astronomical and climatic features.
Every year on the summer solstice (when the sun's ecliptic longitude is 90°), the sun's rays almost directly strike the Tropic of Cancer, and at this time, the daytime duration in the Northern Hemisphere reaches its longest for the year. Due to the high angle of the sun directly shining on the Tropic of Cancer, the phenomenon of 'no shadow at noon' occurs on the Tropic of Cancer.
It's really worth a visit, and moreover, there are popular spots for social media check-ins, which are very photogenic.

Bixi Ancient Town
Bixi ➡️ A remote ancient town on the Southern Yunnan Tea Horse Road,
hidden deep in the Ailao Mountains, on the essential route from Kunming to Xishuangbanna,
without the hustle and bustle, I always make a point to visit when driving by.
The deep courtyards of the caravan families, the street market's everyday life,
and a bowl of tofu pudding is so comforting.
Although the ancient town is small, it retains many old Ming and Qing dynasty residences.
The Kui Xing Pavilion with its flying eaves and corners, the wind chimes that move people,
the city tower, the God of Wealth Temple, and the Yu family's old house are all worth a visit.
As an important post on the Tea Horse Road, Bixi was once a gathering place for merchants,
and the valley produced many talents, including the prominent Yu, He, and Huang families.
Among them, the three Yu brothers were influential in the first half of the 20th century.
From organizing and participating in the Double Ninth Uprising to being a founding figure of the Protect the Country Movement,
holding the position of Minister of Finance, founding the Fudian Bank to the 'Great Double Ninth' cigarettes,
singer Yu Chengqing is also a fourth-generation descendant of the Bixi Yu family.
Times have changed, and Bixi's prosperity has faded, but its simplicity remains,
with few tourists on weekdays, making it suitable for a restful visit during a self-drive trip.
📍️Address: Mojiang Bixi Ancient Town ✅Tour Route: Enter from the town gate and follow the main street to the central four-cornered building, turn left to see the Yu family's courtyard, and then continue left to check in at several old courtyards.

Pu'er Mojiang actually hides an undeveloped ancient town!
🚗 On the way to Pu'er 🛣️, I took a detour to visit Yu Chengqing's hometown—Bixi Ancient Town. This place is simple and undeveloped, and the locals are very warm and genuine 🤗. There are also old grandmas selling Gardenia flowers in medicine bottles on the street 💐, and the local snacks like tofu pudding and soy milk are very fragrant 😋. Having a bowl before setting off is really satisfying~ The photos are not comprehensive 🤔, but those who like niche travel can go for it 🎉!

Spring Festival Tour Day 11: From Yuanjiang to Mojiang Tropic of Cancer Marker Park
Today, I took my child to Mojiang Tropic of Cancer Marker Park in the morning to understand the Tropic of Cancer, which is both educational and fun, and makes it easier to grasp some knowledge.
We set off at eight thirty in the morning and arrived at the west gate parking lot of Mojiang Tropic of Cancer Marker Park at only nine thirty, an hour's drive.
The advantage of entering the park from the west gate parking lot is that you can take the Flying Carpet from the bottom to the top to the Gemini Square.
The Flying Carpet looks like a conveyor belt. When you actually sit on it and experience it, it feels pretty good. I highly recommend you to sit on it yourself. This kind of passenger transport is quite rare. I have driven a lot of roads across the country, and this is the first time I have seen the Flying Carpet. It costs 40 yuan per person to go up the mountain, and you can pay by scanning the WeChat code at the entrance of the Flying Carpet.
If you don't want to spend money, you can go up the stairs, which is not very high. Along the way, you can see the countries and introductions that the Tropic of Cancer passes through on the signs.
Gemini Square consists of Gemini Gate, which is crossed by the Tropic of Cancer, the Wishing Pool, Gemini Well, and Twin Beds. It is said that the high rate of twin births in Mojiang is inseparably linked to the Tropic of Cancer. If you make a wish in the Wishing Pool, drink Gemini water, and sleep in twin beds, you can give birth to twins.
To the left of Gemini Square, up the stairs, are Stonehenge Square, Star Gazing Pavilion, and Hani Fire Fetching Platform.
Stonehenge Square is a main table for measuring the twenty-four solar terms, composed of 12 stone pillars of different lengths and shapes, representing the 12 months of the year. There is a metal ball on the south pillar, and the shadow at noon always moves on the purple-red line, which can be used to accurately infer the twenty-four solar terms. The 12 stone pillars also symbolize the 12 branches of the Hani people living in unity and harmony in this magical and charming oasis of the Tropic of Cancer.
The Hani Fire Fetching Platform is composed of three fire-breathing dragon heads, which resemble the 'three-legged stove' on the Hani's ever-burning hearth. The twelve zodiac signs are located around it, reflecting the blending of Hani culture, Tropic of Cancer culture, and Western culture, and reflecting the Hani people's worship of fire. On major festival days, the local Hani people will hold a grand fire fetching ceremony here to worship the ancestors who brought light to the Hani descendants.
Passing through Gemini Square and heading east, there are the Main Marker Pavilion, Sundial, Sun and Moon Confluence, Transcendence, Stone Ring, Kuafu Chasing the Sun, Five Elements Pillar, all the way to the East Gate.
The exterior of the Main Marker Pavilion is shaped like half a globe, with two lines on it marking the positions of the Tropic of Cancer and the equator on the earth. Every year at noon on the summer solstice, sunlight passes through the 23.26 meter main marker tower's sun peeking hole and shines directly onto the small copper piece inside the tower, where you can directly see the astronomical wonder of 'no shadow of the pole' on the Tropic of Cancer.
The sundial is an ancient Chinese timepiece that uses the sun's shadow to measure time. The sundial consists of a pointer and a disc, with the disc divided into twenty-four sections representing twelve hours. When the sun shines on the disc, the shadow of the pointer will be cast on the corresponding hour on the disc, showing the local solar time of the day.
In certain regions of nature, even if the sound emitted is small, it will be clearly amplified, and the sound is more prolonged and continuous, which is quite interesting and creates a mysterious atmosphere of 'heaven and man responding'. This region is called the 'echo wall'.
The Sun and Moon Confluence is represented by two marble balls each weighing 16 tons, representing the sun and the moon. Every year at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, the sun, moon, and earth revolve and rotate to the same line. In Mojiang, the big sun has not yet set and the moon has already risen. Under the illumination of sunlight and moonlight, the shadows produced by the two marble balls will overlap, forming the astronomical wonder of 'Sun and Moon Confluence'.
The Transcendence Tower, composed of eighty-one steps, is 23.26 meters high. 23.26 is the latitude of the Tropic of Cancer, and the eighty-one steps represent that only by constantly overcoming various difficulties can one reach the peak of one's life and transcend oneself. It is passed down from generation to generation among the Hani people that if you pass through the spiral tower from east to west on the Tropic of Cancer, you can be one year younger, which is what we call 'time travel' today.
🗓The formation of the Tropic of Cancer
The direct sunlight points at the northernmost and southernmost points of the earth formed by the earth's revolution and rotation.
The earth's revolution refers to the earth's rotation around the sun in an elliptical orbit due to the sun's gravitational field. The time of the earth's revolution is one year, approximately 365.2422 days. Every point on the earth's orbit is on the same plane, which is the orbit plane of the earth around the sun, or the ecliptic plane. At the same time as the earth's revolution, it also rotates, and the orbit formed by its rotation is the equatorial plane.
The ecliptic plane formed by the earth's revolution and the equatorial plane formed by its rotation form an angle of 23°26', which is called the ecliptic-equator angle. Due to the influence of the ecliptic-equator angle, the sun's vertical irradiation point moves back and forth between the north and south sides with a period of one year. The northernmost direct sunlight point is called the Tropic of Cancer, and the southernmost direct sunlight point is called the Tropic of Capricorn.
In the region between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, there are two direct sunlights a year, and there is one direct sunlight a year on the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. There is no direct sunlight in the areas north of the Tropic of Cancer and south of the Tropic of Capricorn throughout the year.

Yunnan Pu'er Mojiang has a magical phenomenon - many twins, there are two double wells in the Tropic of Cancer logo park, it is said that drinking well water is easy to give birth to twins! And my favorite is "Starry Sky Camp" - the sky of the Tropic of Cancer, even on a moonlit night, it is starlight!
