If you have half a day to spare in Madrid, Faunia is a spot you absolutely shouldn't miss. I didn't have any expectations before visiting, but now I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Madrid. My friend and I spent four hours there (only because we had to head to the airport), and we were completely blown away by the sheer number of animals and the massive size of the park. I had never seen so many exotic animals in one place, and I was thrilled to see them living in such spacious and well-maintained habitats. The absolute best part is the open areas where you can walk right alongside the lemurs—or, more accurately, they'll casually stroll right past you like they own the place. Faunia is a fantastic way to spend half a day, and it's just as fun for adults as it is for kids. Answers to frequently asked questions: 1. Location - Av. de las Comunidades, 28, Vicálvaro, Madrid 2. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. 3. It's best to book tickets online in advance. This also lets you see when the park's ticket prices are lower. 4. There's plenty of parking near the park. 5. Madrid has a way of surprising you. There wasn’t a strict plan, no packed itinerary, no rushing from one attraction to another. We simply walked, followed beautiful streets, stopped whenever something caught our attention, and somehow every corner led us somewhere incredible. Sometimes the best trips are the ones where you don’t overthink anything. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📅 Day 1 – A Sunset That Set the Tone The first thing we did after arriving wasn’t visiting a museum or a famous square. Instead, we headed straight to one of Madrid’s rooftop terraces. 🎟️ Entrance was only around €5, and it was worth every single cent. From the top, Madrid stretched out in every direction. We found a spot overlooking the city and simply waited for sunset. As the sky slowly turned orange, pink and gold, the whole city began to glow. It was one of those moments where nobody really talks. You just stand there and take it all in. It couldn’t have been a better way to start the trip. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚶 Wandering Through Madrid After sunset, we simply kept walking. No timetable. No pressure. Just beautiful streets, elegant buildings and one surprise after another. Madrid is one of those cities where getting lost almost always rewards you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🐎 One Completely Unexpected Moment The following day gave us something we never planned for. While walking through Plaza Mayor, we suddenly heard horses approaching. A few moments later, the Royal Guard appeared riding magnificent white horses through the square. It honestly felt like travelling back hundreds of years. The traditional uniforms, the perfectly trained horses and the ceremonial atmosphere made the whole square come alive. We hadn’t checked any schedules. We hadn’t booked anything. We were simply lucky enough to be there at exactly the right moment. Sometimes that’s what makes travelling so special. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🏰 Royal Palace & Almudena Cathedral From there, we continued towards the magnificent Royal Palace, one of the largest royal palaces in Europe. Right next door is the beautiful Almudena Cathedral. ✨ One of the best surprises? It’s completely FREE to visit. The inside is peaceful, beautifully decorated and definitely worth stepping inside, even if churches aren’t usually your thing. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌳 A Peaceful Morning at Retiro Park One of our favourite mornings was spent inside El Retiro Park. Instead of rushing around the city, we rented one of the rowing boats and slowly paddled across the lake. From the water, the Monument to Alfonso XII looks even more impressive. It was quiet, relaxing and a completely different side of Madrid. Sometimes slowing down is the best part of travelling. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌅 Temple of Debod Later that evening we headed to one of Madrid’s most famous sunset spots. The Temple of Debod. An authentic Egyptian temple sitting right in the middle of Madrid. As the sun disappeared behind the skyline, the reflections across the water turned everything shades of orange, pink and purple. It’s one of those places that photographs beautifully… …but somehow looks even better in real life. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚄 A Day Trip to Toledo If you’re spending a few days in Madrid… Please don’t skip Toledo. It’s only about 35 minutes by high-speed train, but it feels like stepping into another world. Walking through the ancient city gate instantly transports you back to medieval Spain. Every street feels like part of a movie set. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⛪ San Juan de los Reyes One of the highlights was the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. The intricate stone carvings on the façade are absolutely breathtaking. Even better… ✨ You don’t need to pay to admire this incredible building. Standing there in the late afternoon sunlight, every tiny detail seemed to glow. It’s easily one of the most beautiful buildings we saw during the entire trip. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🍽️ One of the Best Meals We Had The only thing we booked before arriving was dinner at La Llorería. It’s a small Michelin-recommended restaurant, incredibly popular with locals and visitors alike. Because it’s quite small, I’d definitely recommend booking a few days in advance. Watching the chefs prepare every dish in the open kitchen made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Instead of ordering individual dishes, we shared everything so we could taste as much as possible. We ordered: 🦪 Fresh Oysters 🍜 Half Fideos 🥦 Half Cauliflower 🦐 Half Gamba 🌶️ Half Pimiento 🥢 Half Tofu 🐑 Half Koji Lamb 🍷 La Cueva 🍷 La Cabrita 💶 Total for two people: €120.10 Every dish was beautifully presented, full of flavour and completely different from the last. Without question, it became one of the highlights of our trip. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ❤️ Final Thoughts Madrid surprised us in the best possible way. Not because everything was planned… But because almost nothing was. Some of our favourite memories happened by pure chance. A rooftop at sunset. The Royal Guard riding through Plaza Mayor. A peaceful morning rowing across Retiro Park. An unforgettable dinner. A magical day wandering through Toledo. The Royal Palace of Madrid is perfect for those who love historic architecture and royal interiors. The exterior plaza is spacious, and the palace facade has a strong Baroque character. Inside, you’ll find red and gold tones, the throne room, banquet hall, armory, and porcelain exhibition—luxurious without being over the top. My personal favorites are the throne room and the long gallery, where the spatial layers are especially photogenic. Highlights: The throne room’s red and gold drapes and chandeliers are impressive. The royal armory’s armor and swords are great for guys or history buffs to explore slowly. The porcelain exhibition is highly detailed, perfect for close-up shots. The palace’s outer courtyard is also worth visiting for capturing a quiet European palace atmosphere. Photo spots: The main entrance of the palace is ideal for full-building shots. The throne room entrance works well for deep perspective compositions. The long gallery looks great with a phone’s wide-angle lens. The porcelain display cases are perfect for overhead detail shots with soft lighting. Tips: The Royal Palace of Madrid gets crowded during peak hours, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning. The interior tour route is fairly fixed—just follow the signs and avoid backtracking or lingering too long for photos. [Seville] Day trip. A three hours train ride from Madrid to Seville. We covered these locations in a day! 📍 Plaza de España 📍 Royal Alcazar 📍 Cathedral 📍 Palacio de Dueñas 📍 Setas de Sevilla A full day with an early departure from Madrid. This itinerary can be full, lots of walking, but feasible. The attractions are clustered in, and near Seville’s historic center. For a better pace though, I had consider Palacio de las Dueñas as optional. Nothing much impressive in my opinion. The Changing of the Guard ceremony is one of those experiences that sets the tone for the whole day — grand, unhurried and completely free to watch. 💡 Tip: Check the schedule before you go as it doesn't happen every day. · -- 🥂 2. Mercado de San Miguel From the palace, this is your first food stop of the day. Try a fresh empanada and sip a cold glass of sangria while wandering between the stalls. 💡 It gets busy — arriving before midday makes the experience much more enjoyable. · -- 🏛️ 3. Plaza Mayor Step out of the market and into one of the most impressive squares in Spain. Chocolatería San Ginés Just around the corner — and exactly where you want to be mid-morning. San Ginés is legendary for a reason. Puerta del Sol A short walk from San Ginés. Find the Kilometre Zero slab embedded in the pavement — the official geographical centre of Spain. It's a small thing, but standing there feels strangely significant. · -- 🍰 6. El Riojano Madrid's oldest traditional bakery — and easy to walk past if you're not looking for it. Step inside and take a moment to appreciate the beautiful historic interior before picking up something sweet. ✨ More of a moment than a meal stop — but worth it. · -- 🔔 7. La Tienda de los Deseos Just nearby — and one of those easy-to-miss stops that ends up being a highlight. Write down your wish, hang it and ring the shop's bell. La Postalera A cute little shop that feels made for slow travellers. Pick out a locally designed postcard, write something on it and send it home — or to someone who couldn't make the trip. 💌 Simple, personal and a lovely way to slow the pace before the final stretch. · -- 🥪 9. Divorare Don't miss this one. Pick up a fresh, warm focaccia sandwich — mortadella drizzled with honey — and save it for the park. It sounds unusual. Find a spot by the lake fountain, unwrap your Divorare sandwich and just sit for a while. When you're ready, walk over to the fountain and then on to the Crystal Palace — one of the most unexpected highlights of the whole day. First off, I strongly recommend booking tickets ahead of time. We purchased ours a week prior, and even then, they were close to selling out. Once you visit, it’s clear why the tours are in such high demand. We opted for a self-guided tour, and there was a tremendous amount to explore. The palace is breathtakingly extravagant, with far more rooms to see than I initially expected—each more magnificent than the last. There is so much detail to absorb, and don’t forget to look up at the ceilings. The room signs are provided in both Spanish and English. I’ve read complaints about rude staff, but I personally didn’t experience that. Even when I was told to put my backpack in a locker, the staff were polite and helpful. If you’re a fan of history, art, or royalty, this palace is an absolute must-see and offers outstanding value for money—it’s simply stunning. My advice: book at least a week in advance! Also, keep in mind that some guided tours are conducted in Spanish, so choose carefully and don’t complain if you select the wrong one.
