A while ago, I shared a post about the “World’s Shortest International Flight”, the route connecting Brazzaville 🇨🇬 and Kinshasa 🇨🇩 across the Congo River. To my surprise, that post received a lot of interest. It made me wonder: “If that is one of the world’s shortest international flights, what are the other incredibly short commercial flights around the world?” 🤔 So this time, instead of talking about just one route, I went deeper and looked at some of the shortest scheduled passenger flights you can find around the world. When islands are separated by water, roads don’t exist, or crossing by sea takes considerably longer, a short flight can become an essential connection rather than a luxury. · -- 🇨🇬🇨🇩 But One Flight Brought Me Back to My Previous Post… ✈️ Brazzaville 🇨🇬 → Kinshasa 🇨🇩 The two cities sit on opposite sides of the Congo River, only around 24 km apart. Looking at the map, you might think: “That’s incredibly close.” And it is. But here comes the fascinating part. 🌊 One river separates two countries. ✈️ Yet there is an international air route connecting them. 🛫 And it can be operated by a Boeing 737-class jet, not just a tiny aircraft. ASKY operates a direct Brazzaville–Kinshasa service. That alone makes this route fascinating. · -- 💰 But the biggest surprise isn’t the distance… It’s the ticket price. 😳 When I checked the operating dates on Trip.com and searched different dates, the one-way fares I found were around: 🇨🇬 Brazzaville → Kinshasa — ~US$450 🇨🇩 Kinshasa → Brazzaville — ~US$344 That’s for a one-way journey. So naturally, I started wondering: Why would someone pay US$300–450 for a journey of only around 24 km? And this is where the story gets interesting. · -- 👔 Who actually uses this flight? This isn’t necessarily a flight everyone needs. But for business travellers, international travellers, professionals travelling for work, and people who place a high value on time, an air connection between the two cities can make practical sense. When crossing an international border, the distance on the map is only part of the journey. There can be border procedures, transportation, waiting time and logistics to consider. So the real value of the flight may not be the kilometres it saves. It may be the time and convenience it saves. And that made me think: A flight doesn’t always make the distance shorter. When you think of an international flight, you probably picture a journey that takes hours. But did you know there's a scheduled international route where the two capital cities are only about 10 km apart? The flight connects Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo. The two cities face each other across the mighty Congo River, making them one of the closest pairs of national capitals in the world. Although the cities are separated by only a short stretch of water, crossing between them still means crossing an international border. A must visit place located in Kinsahsa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The place is called Parc de la vallée de la n'selé. it's one of the biggest parc in Africa with different kind of wild animals and breathtaking landscapes. the entrance fee which includes a safari tour is only 30$. There are many restaurants, a swimming pool at the top of the mountain with an awesome view of the parc. It's better to go there during the weekend. I arrived in Kinshasa first. For three weeks, I immersed myself in this enormous, energetic city which is busy, colourful, intense and full of life. Kinshasa is the kind of place that seems to have its own rhythm, and you have to surrender to that rhythm. Then came the moment to cross the Congo River. Just about 20 minutes on a ferry later, I arrived in Brazzaville and everything felt different. The contrast was striking. After three weeks in the sprawling, densely populated and often chaotic energy of Kinshasa, Brazzaville felt cleaner, calmer, more orderly and much less crowded. I remember how happy I was to arrive. I was still in Central Africa but I felt like I had suddenly arrived in a completely different part of the world. The two cities were still facing each other across the same mighty Congo River. But somehow, that short ferry ride had taken me from one very different urban experience to another. Standing in Brazzaville and looking across the river, I could see Kinshasa, the city I had just spent three weeks exploring. There it was, on the other side. Two countries. Two capital cities. One enormous river between them. I had travelled from Kinshasa to Brazzaville, but the experience felt like much more than a 20-minute journey. Sometimes travelling isn’t about how far you go. I have crossed many borders in my travels, but none has fascinated me quite like the Congo River. Standing beside its roaring rapids, I understood why generations of explorers respected and feared this mighty waterway. The brown water surged relentlessly past me, carrying the weight of one of the world’s largest river systems. A nearby sign warned visitors about the dangerous rapids. Looking across the river, I wasn’t just seeing another shoreline, I was looking into another country. Few places on Earth offer such a remarkable view. On one bank stands Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo. Directly opposite lies Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. No other pair of national capitals sits so close together, separated only by a river. Curiosity wasn’t enough. I wanted to experience both sides. So I explored the riverbanks in Brazzaville, crossed the Congo River by ferry, and stood on the opposite shore in Kinshasa. The crossing took only 20 minutes, but it felt like travelling between two worlds connected by history, culture, and one extraordinary river. The Congo River is much more than a natural border. Stretching over 4,700 kilometres, it is Africa’s second-longest river, the deepest river on Earth and second only to the Amazon in the volume of water it carries. For millions of people, it is a lifeline, transporting passengers, goods, and ideas through the heart of Central Africa. Standing on both shores gave me a unique perspective. The two capitals seem close enough to wave at each other, yet each has its own rhythm, language and identity. The river divides them physically while binding them together economically and culturally. Crossing the Congo River isn’t simply another border crossing to tick off a travel list. It is an opportunity to experience one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders and witness one of the world’s most remarkable geographical curiosities. We had a big meal

Brazzaville is located on the north bank of the lower Congo River (Zaire River), facing Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, across the river. It is a beautiful tropical city known as the Garden City, with evergreen seasons, rows of mangoes, coconuts, and plantains, and lush green shade. Figures 1-7 show the new landmark in Brazzaville built by Chinese construction—the Twin Towers, consisting of two towers: one is a 30-story hotel and supporting facilities, and the other is an office building. The project started in 2021, aiming to create a city landmark integrating hotel, office, conference, and entertainment functions. The towers are about 100 meters tall, connected by a podium, forming a unique urban landscape. 📅 Itinerary Day1:Explore Kinshasa: Head to the National Museum of DRC and soak up the history. Go shopping at Marché Artisanal Royal for souvenirs before grabbing a drink at Royal Gardens to do some people watching. Finish the evening with Congolese food - try Pondu, Chikwuage and some goat. Day2: Head out early and go to Nsele national park. Take a hike around, feed the hippos, watch the lions and admire the zebras and crocodiles. Enjoy a well earned lunch of Liboke du poisson and Fufu at the park restaurant. Head back to Kinshasa to beat the traffic and grab supper at Chez Beki. Day3: Visit Lola Ya Bonobo and wonder at the bonobos as they play around. Head on over to the nursery to see the new baby bonobos that have just arrived. Soak up the scenery at Lac Ma Vallee with a hike and then some lunch before heading back to Kinshasa for a Lebanese supper at Al Dar. 🏨 Accommodation 🍴 Food Recommendations - Liboke, Chikwuage, Pondu and le Captaine. The museum is so far the best attempt to display Congolese historical art life in the country. It features multiple cultural objects from different tribes found in the country. Apart from its content, the museum’s architecture could stand alone as a topic of discussion, what inspired its design and what does it aim to reference!!?
