Yuanmou Earth Forest Yuanmou Earth Forest has a long history, dating back millions of years, and is a great natural wonder in China and the world. It is located in Yuanmou County, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, and is the product of crustal movement and wind and rain erosion. The formation of the earth forest has gone through a long geological history, from the juvenile stage of fine ditch earth bud type, to the middle and young stage of round basin earth column type, wide ditch castle type, and finally to the old stage of slope residual column type, constituting a complete development history of the earth forest family. The formation of Yuanmou Earth Forest is a complex and long process. It is mainly composed of sand, clay, trace iron, and a small amount of calcareous cement deposited by Quaternary lakes and rivers. In a dry climate environment, these loose deposits are eroded and washed by seasonal rainwater, gradually forming a landscape of thousands of gullies. Especially in some strata, the enrichment of iron cement forms a hard iron cap after weathering, protecting the underlying clay and gravel layers, weakening the erosion force of rainwater, and thus forming a tower-like and column-like earth forest landscape. This process is the result of the combined action of water erosion, geological structure, climate environment, and other factors.
