The Town Of Uji - Kyoto
#japan #kyoto #temples #temple #culture #history #teahouse #japanesefood #heritage
Uji is another town in Kyoto that is away from the crowded tourists place but still worth a visit if you are in Kyoto. Uji is located down south andis also know for it's many temples and shrines that grows long histories with it. The 2 must visit temple here is the Byodo In Temple and the Manpuku-Ji temple which is popular among both locals and tourists too!
Along the streets of uji, there are many local street food vendors selling traditional Japanese matcha dessert and hand made mochis and even old tea houses established by the locals.
One of the most iconic temples of Japan
I've got a story to share about my recent trip to Japan, more specifically, a little gem called Byodoin Temple in Uji.
So, after a quick train ride from Kyoto, my sister and I found ourselves in Uji. Our stomachs were grumbling, so we refueled with a scrumptious lunch before diving into the temple experience.
Byodoin Temple, folks, is a bona fide icon of Japan. The architecture was mind-blowing, with intricate details that seemed to whisper tales of centuries past. We explored the stunning Phoenix Hall, which stood tall and proud amidst a picturesque pond. The tranquil atmosphere made it a perfect spot to reflect and find some inner peace.
Visiting Byodoin Temple was one of the highlights of our Japanese escapade. It's a place that not only showcases Japan's rich history but also nourishes the soul. We even bought Omikuji to commemorate our visit to this place!

Japan trip in Kyoto
Visiting one of the world heritage sites called “Byodoin” in Kyoto, Japan. The collaboration of the red from the gorgeous ancient building and the blue from sky is superb. There are many more historical temples and shrines around Kyoto which are so distinctive to one another. Come and discover them with your own eyes someday😊

Uji - A Healing Small Town
Uji - A Healing Small Town
It was drizzling that day. I took the JR line from Kyoto, and in just over 30 minutes, I arrived in Uji. As soon as I stepped out of the station, I felt the tranquility and peace of Uji in the light rain! That inexplicable healing feeling can only be experienced when you are there.
Here is my route in Uji for your reference
Matcha Performance
Since I arrived early, I booked a matcha performance at 10 o'clock at the Uji Tourist Center, 2000 yen per person. Several kind elderly ladies were busy preparing. To be honest, I didn't really grasp the essence of the matcha performance. If you are not particularly fond of matcha, I wouldn't recommend it.
Byodo-in Temple
Byodo-in Temple in Uji is a Heian period garden temple with a pond and boat tour style. Its location is considered a prime spot, facing the Uji River and looking out towards Asahi Mountain. Its Phoenix Hall is one of the most famous Buddhist buildings in Japan. Built in 1053, it has stood ever since. The colorful Buddhist murals are somewhat mottled and have been protected, so visitors are not allowed to touch them. Visiting the Phoenix Hall requires a separate ticket, 1000 yen per person. The name Phoenix Hall comes from the two golden phoenixes on the roof.
Another important highlight of Byodo-in Temple is that the back of the 10 yen coin and the 10,000 yen bill both feature the image of Byodo-in Temple.
The Tale of Genji Museum
The Tale of Genji is to Japan what Dream of the Red Chamber is to China, so this Tale of Genji Museum is worth a visit to learn about the history of the Heian period in Japan. However, compared to Dream of the Red Chamber, The Tale of Genji is on a much lower level. It is astonishing to see the luxurious and chaotic lives of Japanese nobles.
Uji Bridge
Uji Bridge is located on the Uji River near Kyoto and is one of the three ancient bridges in Japan. It has a long history and deep cultural significance. It is also mentioned multiple times in The Tale of Genji. Standing on the bridge, you can feel the flow of the Uji River from top to bottom, like it is washing away our grievances and worries, very healing.
Uji Matcha
When in Uji, you must mention matcha. Matcha has now become synonymous with Uji. Mention Uji, and you think of matcha; mention matcha, and you think of Uji. The two most famous matcha shops, Ito and Nakamura, always have long queues. I bought some souvenirs, and if you spend over 5000 yen, you can get a tax refund on the spot.
Uji Cuisine
For Uji cuisine, I recommend going to the tea house Kurikichi by the Uji River. You need to make a reservation. If you go directly, you will have to take a number and wait in line. We waited for more than half an hour. The matcha noodles, eel rice, and tempura were all beautiful and delicious, perfect for photos.
Byodoin Temple
Byodo-in Temple, that shows the historical glory of the Fujiwara clan, was once a villa on the west bank of the beautiful Uji-gawa River.
If you feel like you’ve seen this temple somewhere before, you probably have – its ornate Phoenix Hall is featured on the back of the JPY 10 brown coin. Byodoin Temple lies in the peaceful UJI town, known for its immaculate matcha and tea in the ancient Kyoto! A UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s one of Japan’s most recognizable temples.
matcha lover’s heaven - UJI
If you are matcha lover, you could never missed out this place! Uji! Easily get there from Kyoto by train, there’s even a matcha theme train! All kinds of matcha products you can find, from sweets to savoury, like icecream, udon, soba and gyoza! Regardless to the food, the view in the area is amazing, good for a very relaxing walk around to enjoy te nature as well, worth a day trip to Uji!
Exploring Mimurotoji Temple
Mimurotoji Temple in Kyoto offers a place of deep peace and natural beauty. The temple truly shines during the autumn foliage season, with its quiet walking paths and serene atmosphere being particularly attractive. The temple houses well-preserved traditional Japanese gardens, making it an ideal spot for meditation in a tranquil setting. Additionally, the decorative architecture and meticulously maintained gardens of Mimurotoji leave a lasting impression on visitors. Compared to other famous tourist spots in Kyoto, it is relatively less crowded, making it a perfect place to quietly appreciate the temple's beauty.

They also have a shop and cafe if you’re looking to purchase. Prices here are reasonable and they have variation across quality and type.
The ground floor had a museum and a shop

Tranquil and Quaint Town – Uji
Slow Travel in the Tranquil and Quaint Town – Uji
Byodo-in Temple, with nearly a thousand years of history, is one of Japan's most representative World Heritage sites. Ujigami Shrine, the oldest shrine in Japan, is also listed as a World Heritage site, and every beam and pillar is considered a national treasure.
The representative building within Byodo-in, the Phoenix Hall (originally named Amida Hall), houses an approximately 8-meter-tall statue of Amitabha Tathagata, carved by the famous Heian-era Buddhist master Jocho. The walls and pillars around it are vividly painted with images of heavenly beings, phoenixes, and arabesque patterns, decorating the hall as if it were a magnificent and dreamy Pure Land.
The image of Byodo-in on the Japanese 10-yen coin and the phoenix on the 10,000-yen note are both from Byodo-in in Uji, Kyoto.
Ujigami Shrine was built in the year 313 and has a history of over 1,700 years. The shrine's grounds are rich in historical and cultural significance, and it houses many of Japan's important cultural properties.

Hydrangea Spot in Kyoto【Mimurotoji Temple】
I visited Mimurotoji Temple in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture!
Known as the 'Hydrangea Temple', it's famous for its hydrangeas, with about 50 varieties and 200 plants on the premises 😳
This year, the hydrangea garden is open from 6/1 to 7/7.
I was able to see many different colors and types of hydrangeas, which was very soothing. It seems that the lotus flowers will also be in full bloom in July and August.
It's about a 15-minute walk from Keihan Mimurodo Station. Parking was 1,000 yen for the day. If you love hydrangeas, I definitely recommend a visit ☺️

beautiful Buddhist temple in the world
The Byodi-In Temple was a special experience for our family. It's unbelievably beautiful and tranquil. The scenery is stunning, and I recommend visiting.
Entry fee $5 can be paid at the booth at the entrance.
If you are in Honolulu do not miss this place, your Hawaii trip is unfinished if you miss this place
Super touristy temple without even any monks, but it's really nice, especially situated in the valley of temples. It doesn't take more than a half hour, even with the souvenirs and some snacks.
Kyoto: Home to beautiful nature scenery🇯🇵
#japantrip
In Kyoto, I was swept away by the timeless beauty etched into every corner. The air hummed with reverence as I wandered the grounds of Byodo-in, tracing the intricate carvings and feeling the weight of centuries of history. Each step unveiled a new layer of Japan's rich cultural tapestry, from the serene gardens to the majestic halls adorned with centuries-old artifacts. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the temple, I felt a profound sense of peace and wonder—a moment frozen in time amidst Kyoto's timeless allure.
🍵 Bottled Ink in Matcha flavour?!

We were attracted to hoop into this shop by the product the display at the glass. This shop offer matcha at different roast level with the combination of freshly brewed coffee and coffee jelly ❤️ a very unique and daring combination turn out to be very special and memorable!
If you are a fan of matcha, they do sell tools to make matcha too! Personally like this cafe atmosphere very much as it is very cozy and pleasant.
🪙 Coin to Real Life
#japantrip
If you plan to visit this temple, please remember to keep a 100yen with you as this temple is actually at one side of the 100yen coin! We missed this out paying the coin to the shop we visited previously 🥲
This temple has been in this area for 1 millennium (1000) years ago, shockingly the structure and the look was upkeep as new as it could be!
Psst! Need to pre-book ticket before entering this place!

It was a bit rainy 🌧️ on the day of my visit to Uji, but the misty weather matched the atmosphere of Uji perfectly. Kyoto Prefectural Uji Park
#thingstodo
Nice historical park famous for their green tea products. Very pleasant walk beside the river with its trees beginning to blossom the autumn colours. Interesting to see ducks diving into the fast flowing river catching fishes. There's a notice sign saying cormorant fishing but nothing in sight except cormorants flying around. Really nice park also the anime sound! Euphonium!'s stage.
