#kindnessontheroad Armenia’s Lake Sevan, often called the “Jewel of Armenia,” is a vast alpine lake surrounded by medieval monasteries and rolling hills. During a long-distance hike along the Sevan Peninsula trail, I veered off the main path, seeking a quieter spot to eat my lunch. I found a secluded grove of walnut trees near the water’s edge. As I sat on a sun-warmed rock, cracking a store-bought snack, a local teenager emerged from the trees. He couldn’t have been older than sixteen. He carried a cloth bag brimming with freshly gathered walnuts. Seeing my struggle with my packaged nuts, he smiled shyly and pulled out a handful of his own harvest. Using a flat stone, he demonstrated how to crack the shells cleanly without crushing the kernel inside. He then poured a small pile of the creamy, ivory-colored walnuts into my palm. They were richer and less bitter than any I’d bought in Yerevan’s markets. We communicated through gestures and a few words of Russian I’d picked up—he was gathering nuts to help his grandmother prepare churchkhela, the traditional candle-shaped candy. He pointed to a cluster of trees, indicating they were his family’s. This brief interaction highlighted the region’s agricultural rhythm. If hiking around Sevan, wear closed-toe shoes; the trails are rocky and dotted with thorny bushes. Bring plenty of water, as shade is sparse. The local minibuses (marshrutkas) from Yerevan cost about 1,500 AMD and drop you at the peninsula entrance. From there, it’s a pleasant 3 km walk to the Noratus Cemetery, famous for its ancient khachkars (cross-stones). Keep some small change handy for rural purchases—credit cards are rarely accepted outside the capital. That boy’s simple gift of walnuts was a reminder that the best travel experiences are often unscripted. Have you ever received an unexpected gift from a local
