A Comprehensive Guide to Taking Kids to Hulunbuir During Summer Vacation
Get up close and personal with nature
🎉🎉Just back from Hulunbuir, where the blue sky, white clouds, and green grasslands create a picturesque scene with cattle and sheep grazing as the wind blows. July and August are the most beautiful months for the grasslands. For a summer vacation with kids, Hulunbuir is definitely an ideal destination! 🎉🎉
🚗🚗About the way to travel: Generally, it involves chartered cars, self-driving, or joining a tour group. For first-timers, I recommend hiring a local guide with a car. There are several reasons: many places on the grassland have no signal, and only local drivers know the way; compared to the fixed schedule of bus tours, chartered cars offer more freedom for kids, stop whenever you want, and do whatever you want to do.
🌈🌈Recommended itinerary:
D1: ✈Arrive at Hailar Airport—Rest at hotel—Taste local cuisine
D2: Hailar—Grassland crossing—Morigele River—Ergun (Asia's largest wetland)

D5: Heishantou—Zhalainuoer Museum—Mammoth Park—Matryoshka Square (Manzhouli)
D6 Manzhouli—National Gate Scenic Area—Hulun Lake—Home
🔥🔥Activities kids must experience:
1⃣ Horse riding on the grassland, feeling the thrill of galloping. 2⃣ Milking cows, getting up close with the grassland life, and feeling the charm of dairy cows. 3⃣ Feeding lambs, interacting closely with small animals, kids will definitely love it. 4⃣ Staying in a Mongolian yurt, experiencing the life of grassland herders, and feeling a different charm. 5⃣ Checking in at the Matryoshka hotel, enjoying the Russian style. 6⃣ Grass sliding, experiencing the exciting and fun activity on the grassland.
🍔🍔About food: The cuisine of Hulunbuir is also a highlight. Don't worry about kids not being used to the food, they will really enjoy the hearty meals there! The beef and mutton are so delicious, and you can also experience authentic Russian cuisine in Manzhouli.
👗👗About clothing: The temperature difference between morning and evening on the grassland is significant, so it's advisable to bring a windbreaker. You can wear normal short-sleeved T-shirts at noon, and sunscreen is also very important!
Overall, this trip offered a glimpse of the grasslands and forests, an experience of the herders' life on the grassland, and a taste of exotic cultures, truly a fulfilling experience!

🌟 Hand-grabbed Meat: Made from mutton, named for the large chunks of meat that are torn by hand when eating, it has a distinctive ethnic flavor and is deliciously rich.
🌟 Grilled Beef and Mutton Skewers: The meat is firm and flavorful, and Inner Mongolian mutton does not have a gamey taste, just grill and flaunt it.
🌟 Inner Mongolian Milk Tea: Made by boiling milk tea with ingredients like beefsteak, minced meat, cheese, and dried meat, all simmered together.
🏞 Accommodation Guide
⭕️ Hailar Accommodation
If you are traveling independently, it is recommended to stay near the Hailar train station. This makes travel convenient, as it is easy and inexpensive to take a taxi within the city.
⭕️ Manzhouli Accommodation
Hotels in the Manzhouli city area are a bit old. The Matryoshka Hotel is not really recommended during the peak tourist season, as it's too expensive and not cost-effective. It is suggested to choose a Russian-style hotel for a good experience at a reasonable price.
⭕️ Heishantou Accommodation
Heishantou is mainly Mongolian yurts. When booking, make sure to compare prices, as they can vary greatly. Definitely book in advance during the peak season.
⭕️ Shiwei Accommodation
Shiwei accommodations are typically wooden houses, with generally basic conditions but quite characteristic.

Manzhouli, it's like stepping into a fairy tale world
Friends in my circle asked me if I had gone abroad, and then I realized I had gone to Hulunbuir, a place that can retain the time and years.
When everyone thought that the wonderful scenery here was just the grassland scenery, the fairy tale town of Manzhouli was the first to stand up and 'disagree'. Its candy-colored architectural design is eye-catching, as if stepping into a fairy tale world.
Here, you can feel the precipitation of time, and you can also appreciate the dreamlike fairy tale. Hulunbuir, a place that makes people linger, is waiting for you to explore its endless charm!

📝Note tips:
1 The temperature difference between morning and evening is large, you need to bring a coat, as well as long clothes and trousers
2 The hotel price increase during the tourist season is exaggerated, it is recommended to stay in a youth hostel for a few tens of dollars, and prepare private items (such as towels, slippers, hangers, etc.)
3 Due to the long distance in Inner Mongolia and unstable weather, you need to prepare heavy luggage, it is recommended to bring a 29-inch oversized suitcase out-Meitu Fat Box.

Manzhouli: between China, Russia and Mongolia
The Chinese city of Manzhouli in Inner Mongolia Province sits at the intersection of China, Russia and Mongolia, and shares a mix of all these three different cultures!
The Russian influence is pretty dominant, especially in the architecture and overall look of the city.
I hired a driver who took me around to visit the main attractions for the entire day, and I have to say that visiting the city has been almost a surreal experience!

🪆MANZHOULI - Russia in China
Yes, believe it or not these places are still inside Mainland China! Located a few kilometers from the Russian border, Manzhouli is a tiny city with great personality. It is a mix of three countries: China, Russia, and Mongolia; becoming quite the urban city along the years. It shares borders with Xing’anling on the east, Hulun Lake on the south, Mongolia on the west and Russia to the north. 🇨🇳 🇷🇺 🇲🇳
Manzhouli is also home to China’s century-old and busiest land port, hence it’s known regionally as "the Window of Eastern Asia".
We visited in mid-July and although the days were nice and sunny, we were definitely not prepared for the nights. Temperatures would drop drastically after sunset and winter coats (which we found at a little street stand for ¥100) came in very handy!
When in Manzhouli, you cannot miss Matryoshka Square: the only one of its kind in China, with features that combine all three cultures.
The square displays over 200 oversized Matryoshka dolls, which are also known as nesting dolls. The dolls have a wide variety of figures painted on them in many styles. They have Russian, Chinese, and Mongolian girls painted on the outside of some.
The largest one is about 30 meters tall. This massive doll holds the Guinness World Record for the largest Matryoshka doll in the world. Inside of it, there is a hotel, Russian cuisine restaurant, and a performance hall. At night, there are singing and dancing performances in the square by foreigners, along with fireworks. Of course, gift shops all around. 🎁💸
Around Manzhouli you can also visit Hulun Lake and an interesting, small (but most of all random) theme park. There are life-sized mammoth statues all around, old school rollercoasters, a big Ferris wheel, and bumper cars. Plus a beautiful Russian style building that seemed to be completely empty and abandoned! 😂 It’s good fun since there is not much else to do.
The night life pretty dead, sadly. We roamed around a lot looking for places to eat and have a drink, but at around 10pm, all the street lights were off and finding a cab was a hassle. You’ll need no more than a day or two here!

Fantastic streets around the temple with a large number of stalls selling allsorts. Another street has a number of small cafe type shops. The temple was very very impressive and free. A genuine taste of China culture. Interesting tower for a short visit. Do not need to spend a lot of time here as there's nothing much to see there
#tripaway
Manzhouli City is located in the hinterland of Hulunbuir Prairie in Inner Mongolia. It is bordered by Xing'anling in the east, Hulun Lake in the south, Mongolia in the west and Russia in the north. It is the largest border crossing port in China. Due to its border with Russia, the city has a strong Russian atmosphere.
Manzhouli City houses are all buildings with Russian elements (Russian and European architectural style). When you come to Manchuria, you will experience the exotic atmosphere, as if you are in a small town in a European country.
This city is separated from Russia by only one country, so Russians are often seen on the streets of this city. At present, almost every building in Manzhouli City has more or less Russian style, with spires and colorful colors.
When the night is bleak, with the night of the night, the cool night wind, anything can be thought of, everything can be set, and gently sucked In one breath, the mind and body are very comfortable.
Tonight, I am ups and downs with your light waves, so high, so far, I am a little excited, your neon, burning has become my inner flame .
Tonight, all about your dreams, made like wish, beautiful and illusory, in the fast flashing and changing, your charm, quietly intoxicated / hc /

Tonight, the fleeting beauty is eternal; tonight, I am willing to be the rolling Yangtze River; you indulge in my heart, we are in harmony, waiting for the sound of the night, playing the sound of the dawn.
China's largest land port, the largest national gate, is located in Manzhouli, the remote small county town of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which may not be so familiar to most southerners.
Manzhouli's Guomen Scenic Area is only a few kilometers away from the urban area. It can be reached quickly by taxi. The national gate is 105 meters long, 43.7 meters high and 46.6 meters wide. It was built in 2008 and is embedded in the milky white door. The seven "red" characters of the "People's Republic of China" were adopted by the International Railway. The
Gumen scenic area covers an area of 13 square kilometers, including the No. 41 boundary pillar, the national gate, the red international secret traffic line, the main sculpture of the Peace Gate, the historical relief of Manzhouli, the red tourism exhibition hall, and the locomotive square.
Located in the western part of Manzhouli, Guomen is a milky white building 30 meters high and 40 meters wide. There are seven red characters "People's Republic of China" above the country gate. The country gate was built in 2008. There are three railway tracks of two widths and one standard below. The building is tall and magnificent. There are two squares outside the scenic spot, one fighter and one locomotive. The fighter plane was purchased by the people of Manzhouli for the donation of the state. It is now used to commemorate. The small locomotive in the locomotive square was the head of the train when Chairman Mao visited the Soviet Union.

Manzhouli, the pearl of the grassland, a dreamy fairy tale.
Manzhouli, a small border town located at the junction of China, Russia, and Mongolia, has a unique geographical environment and profound cultural heritage. It is not only the gateway from China to Europe, but also a tourist destination full of exotic customs. Here are my travel experiences in Manzhouli.
First encounter with Manzhouli
My understanding of Manzhouli began with a random travel plan. Before that, my understanding of this place was limited to the description of the Sino-Russian border in textbooks. But when I set foot on this land, I found that Manzhouli was much richer and more colorful than I had imagined.
Exotic streets
Walking on the streets of Manzhouli, the most attractive thing is the buildings that blend Chinese and Russian styles. The red brick Russian-style buildings and the Orthodox churches decorated with onion domes make people feel as if they are in a foreign country. Walking among these buildings, you can hear Russian conversations from time to time, which adds to the exotic atmosphere.
Experience in the Russian market
One of the most famous attractions in Manzhouli is the Russian market. It brings together many Russian characteristic commodities, from handicrafts, matryoshka dolls to various characteristic foods, everything is available. I bought some Russian candies and matryoshka dolls here. They are not only souvenirs of travel, but also carriers of beautiful memories.
Border scenery and cultural experience
During my few days in Manzhouli, I visited the National Gate Scenic Area and the Sino-Russian border. Standing in front of the national gate, looking at the vast grassland and the distant border, I couldn't help but have a deeper understanding of this land. In addition, I also experienced authentic Russian folk performances and food in the Russian Cultural Village, which made my trip to Manzhouli more colorful.
Conclusion
With its unique geographical advantages and cultural integration, Manzhouli has left a deep impression on every tourist. It not only has rich tourism resources, but also has profound cultural heritage and hospitable folk customs. For those who are eager to explore new things and experience different cultures, Manzhouli is definitely a worthwhile tourist destination.

Moerdaoga Forest Park🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
* A very surprising place, many places had lost their leaves during the National Day, but here retained the most, golden and beautiful.
* Be sure to bring insect repellent and ointment!! There are a lot of ticks that will crawl into your hair and clothes, and there are many bees (wasps too), I got stung.
* Self-driving route is more free than the small train.
Heishantou🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
* The sunset is so beautiful, the trees in the wetland are golden, and the water is super blue.
* The best place to watch the sunset varies with each season, ask the locals.
Linjiangtun🌟🌟🌟
* Go to Shenxianpo in the afternoon, you can see the very blue Ergun River.
* The sunset at Shenxianpo is average, far worse than Heishantou.
* The sunrise at the north slope is very beautiful, with a high chance of encountering morning fog.
Ka Line🌟🌟
* The entire Ka Line follows the Ergun River, the water is very blue.
* The scenery during the National Day is average, the landscape is very monotonous, more beautiful at the end of September and in summer.
* No need to go there specifically during the National Day.
* The wind is stronger and colder than other places.
Manzhouli🌟🌟
* I love shopping at Dashan Russian Supermarket, delicious and cheap!
* Lubuli Restaurant is a must-visit!
* Matryoshka Square is just an amusement park, no need to go inside.
* The lobby of the Matryoshka Hotel is super beautiful!! Palace style, very Russian!
Shiwei🌟
* Very commercial, can be finished in half an hour, the bread sold inside is quite good.
* There is a particularly yellow section of road from Moerdaoga to Shiwei.

Hulunbuir.
At first glance, it looks like the White Cliffs of Dover in England, but in fact, it's not England, but Hulun Lake, the "sea" at the end of the Hulunbuir grassland. Now, the grass in Hulunbuir has turned green, ushering in the most beautiful time of the year.

Manzhouli City
County-level city under the jurisdiction of Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
Manzhouli City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is located in the northeast of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the northwest of Hulunbuir City. It is situated in the transitional zone between the Hulunbuir Plateau and the Greater Khingan Range, with a temperate semi-arid continental climate. It borders the Russian Federation to the north and is China's largest land port city, adjacent to two banners, with a total area of 732.44 square kilometers. As of June 2023, Manzhouli City administers 5 subdistricts, 1 town, and 4 township-level units.
In the 27th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1901), a railway station was established on the western line of the Chinese Eastern Railway. Because it was the first station entering Northeast China (then commonly referred to as "Manchuria") from Russia, it was named "Manzhouli Station". In Russian, it is "Manchuria", which was transliterated into Chinese as "Manzhouli". In January of the 30th year of the Republic of China (1941), it was renamed Manzhouli City. In October 2001, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Hulunbuir City. In 2013, the Zhalainuoer District of Hulunbuir City was placed under the jurisdiction of Manzhouli City. In March 2023, the Zhalainuoer District came under the direct administration of Hulunbuir City. Major attractions include the China-Russia Border Tourism Area, the Mammoth Tourism Area, the China-Russia Mutual Market Trade Tourism Area, and the Manzhouli Matryoshka Doll Scenic Area.
Manzhouli Museum.
Walk from the Sino-Russian Golden Street Pedestrian Street to the Manzhouli Museum, passing by Russian-style buildings and crossing the pedestrian bridge over the railway. Time seems to have gone back to the past, and the Manzhouli Museum is located in a Russian-style building not far from the train station.
After the signing of the Treaty of Nerchinsk in 1689, the Sino-Russian border was established from Kyakhta to the mouth of the Hailar River. In 1734, the Qing government organized the Barga Mongols into eight banners and sent them to guard the borders on both sides of the Urson River. In the 1850s, Buryat Mongols came to the valley where Manzhouli is located today, calling it "Holjin Burak" because of its abundant spring water. Subsequently, the water springs, rivers, mountains, and grasslands in the vicinity were all named after Holjin.
The "Overview of Manzhouli City" records: "The Han and Manchu people first set foot here around 1884. A group of merchants from the northern and western provinces came to the region for the first time to trade with the Mongols." Subsequently, the merchants who traveled to Mongolia opened up a trade route to Nerchinsk, Russia.
Russia began laying the Chelyabinsk-Vladivostok Railway in 1891. In 1895, Russia sent a large number of engineers and technicians to Northeast China under the guise of tourism and investigation. On June 3, 1896, China and Russia signed the "Treaty of Mutual Assistance between China and Russia," also known as the "Secret Treaty between China and Russia." On August 28 of the following year, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Chinese Eastern Railway (later known as the Chinese Eastern Railway) was held. On November 3, 1901, a joint track-laying ceremony was held near Ugunor Station. In 1907, as a result of the Russo-Japanese War, Manzhouli, along with 16 other towns and cities, including Harbin, were forced to "voluntarily" open their ports to trade. When Manzhouli's commercial port was booming, merchants from Shanxi, Hebei, Inner and Outer Mongolia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia flocked to the city. By the second decade of the 20th century, the development of railways and commercial ports had led to the rapid growth of hotels, inns, shops, and other consumer places in Manzhouli. The population of Manzhouli soared, and it was once known as the "Cosmopolitan Capital."

The Hulunbuir Border Card Line usually refers to the road starting from Manzhouli, along the Sino-Russian border river Erguna River, all the way to Shiwei, covering nearly 210 kilometers. The route traverses various landscapes such as grasslands, hills, rivers, wetlands, and forests, making it an excellent route to explore Hulunbuir.
⚠️ Especially in autumn, this place is truly a 'spilled palette,' with colors so vibrant that they leave you speechless❗️❗️ A life suggestion is to definitely come here to appreciate the autumn scenery at least once.

Scenery Along the Way:
Erguna Wetland Protection Area
Located about 30 kilometers west of Manzhouli, this is one of the sources of the Erguna River and is rich in wildlife resources.
Five Card, Seven Card
Each 'card' along the border card line has its unique features. From One Card to Nine Card, each post has its unique scenery and historical background. Among the many posts, Five Card and Seven Card are considered the most beautiful parts❗️❗️ Additionally, the birch forest in the Seven Card area is also a major feature, making it a great spot for photography.
186 Ribbon River
Attracts many tourists with its winding river and vast wetland landscape, but it is not recommended to enter the scenic area as the scenery is the same unless you want to experience activities like grass skiing.
Heishantou Town
Not only an important historical and cultural site but also an excellent place to watch the sunset.
In addition to natural scenery, the route also passes through several villages and towns with rich ethnic characteristics, such as Enhe Russian Ethnic Township, which retains many traditional wooden houses and Russian customs. Shiwei Town is one of China's top ten charming villages and towns, where history and modern civilization intertwine, putting a perfect end to the scenery along the way.
⚠️⚠️ Regarding accommodation, it is not highly recommended to stay in Enhe and Shiwei as they are quite commercialized. For those who are more adventurous, it is recommended to set off early in the morning, pass through the Card Line, Genbai Road, and Bailu Road, and arrive at Qiqian Village by dusk. This village is a small village in the hinterland of the Sino-Russian border, located by the Erguna River, with only a few households and homestays, very primitive and very beautiful.
Also, drones are not allowed here, so it's best to bring a telephoto lens for easy shooting and framing.
