Such a tiring but memorable place. Depart from hotel at 12am, arrive there and had our &ldquo;breakfast or supper&rdquo; at 2am and start to hike. We spent around 2.5-3hours to reach the peak. Wait for sun rise and the blue lake was amazing. worth our energy to hit the peak. 😍

I finally got the chance to visit this active volcano and believe it or not it’s one of the WORLD’s MUST-SEE VOLCANOES because apparently this Ijen Volcano Crater has the world’s largest acidic volcanic crater lake which, the water is actually in UNIQUE turquoise color! Imagine how cool is that! THIS TIME, We are here for the sole purpose of visiting this crater because this turquoise colored-lake within the crater is quite famous for it’s color and the local miners normally call it the Kawah Ijen. This crater is located right on top of the Mount Ijen where you have to hike 3km from the bottom starting all the way up taking the one way narrow and steep trail to reach the top. For a novice like me i would say this is quite challenging to walk and climb in the dark with a torchlight that provides barely enough visibility to see what’s coming your way in a few meters. 

While hiking and climbing up you can see a lot of old sulfur miners ( some barefooted ) marathon-ing using the same trail carrying a basket each as if racing with each other to reach the top to dig minerals, sulfurs or whatsoever they have to dig to sell it for money, leaving us behind staggering and struggling to make each step forward in reaching the same point of mountain. This is too exhausting but worth the effort when you can start smelling something like the rotting eggs and food as you climb higher because it means that you’re about to reach your destination, the GREEN LAKE!

📸 Photo spots (these locations are legendary)

Penida Island · Kelingking Beach: Bali’s most iconic spot! The cliff shaped like a T-Rex stretches into the Tiffany blue sea. Stand on the viewing platform and use a wide-angle lens to make people small and scenery big. Phone shots look like National Geographic covers. ⚠️ The cliff path is steep and unpaved. Wear non-slip shoes! Best light is 3–5 PM.

Penida Island · Broken Beach + Angel’s Billabong: Natural sea stone arch with surreal waves rushing through the cave; next to it is a volcanic rock infinity pool that looks like floating in the sky at low tide. ⚠️ Don’t get close to the edge of the billabong at high tide!

Bromo Volcano · Penanjakan viewpoint: Jeep departs at 3 AM to watch the sunrise turn the sea of clouds and “lunar surface” sand golden. Wear a windbreaker + fleece layers. It’s about 50°F at dawn!

Option 1: Bali + Penida 5 days (beginner friendly): D1 Tanah Lot sunset → D2 Ubud Monkey Forest + Tegallalang rice terraces + Tirta Empul temple → D3 Penida west coast day tour (Kelingking Beach + Broken Beach + Angel’s Billabong) → D4 Uluwatu cliff + Jimbaran seafood dinner → D5 return. ⚠️ Penida is a 40–60 min fast boat from Sanur harbor. Roads on the island are rough; private car hire is a must!
