Depends how you roll - if you get a package dont worry about it, youre not in control so it doesnt really matter. Its a cool place to check out. If you are travelling ruff and rugged here are a few tips. If you are short on time stay near the mountain, not probolinggo cuz its a haul in the early AM. If you have a lot of time then Probolinggo can be a launchpad for a few days of looking around at waterfalls and whatnot. If you are a foreigner and are not hiking or taking a motorcycle taxi - when you park the middlemen will hit you up to sell you a ticket for a jeep ride - dont get burned just ignore them and go the little office behind them where the workers sit and ask them for a voucher - theyll sell it at the legit price which right now is 350,000 RP - so while they are right behind the middlemen if you dont know whats going on theyll let you get pinched because thats the way they run things. As well, they charge you to go see the sunrise and then to the volcano- the day we went the sun didnt come up but they took us there anyway and they knew it was pointless - so there might Be some point in asking about the weather at the top - you just end up feeling stupid when they take you to see this amazing sunrise and then they say o sorry today is cloudy.
