Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward group of the Community Islands, French Polynesia, a French overseas colony located in the Pacific Ocean. The island is located about 230 km (140 mi) northwest of Papeete. The island is surrounded by a lagoon and a row of coral reefs. In the center of the island lies a former volcano which has two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, with the highest point at 727 m (2,385 ft). Bora Bora is a major international tourism destination, known for its luxurious aqua-centric resorts. The main settlement, Vaitape, is on the west side of the main island, opposite the main route to the lagoon. The island's output is mostly limited to what can be extracted from the sea and coconut trees, which have had a historic economic role in producing copra.
