Mount Aso truly stands out as a must-visit destination for sightseeing and fun, perfectly matching its reputation as an iconic landmark of the city. Convenient transportation, high-quality service with comprehensive guide systems, and stunning natural views contribute to an excellent core experience 🌄. The fall scenery here is breathtaking and easily accessible, making it ideal for a family-friendly adventure. After visiting Mount Aso, I would definitely recommend it to friends. The beauty of the landscape left me amazed, and my overall experience was fantastic. Some memorable moments included tasting delicious local ice cream and milk, both of which were delightful. Surprisingly, the horse skin care products really worked for me, and I greatly appreciated Eiichi, our tour guide, for making the visit special. Basic information about Mount Aso, including its name and address (Takawara, Aso, Kumamoto 869-2223, Japan), is accurate. The opening hours are also correct, with the site being closed for the day but open tomorrow from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. From my experience, mornings are the best time to visit Mount Aso for optimal scenery and a comfortable experience. 🌅 Practical tip: Bring a jacket as it gets windy and cold up there. Although you can't get close to the volcano due to safety concerns, the view from afar is still spectacular. Enjoy the local treats and don’t miss out on the unique horse skin care products! If you're planning to visit, soaking in the views from a safe distance while indulging in local treats is highly recommended. Thanks again to our wonderful guide, Eiichi, for making the visit memorable.

Visiting Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Japan, is an experience that makes you realise just how powerful and beautiful nature can be. This is not an ordinary mountain – it is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas, with dramatic landscapes, vast green fields, volcanic smoke, and breathtaking panoramic views.

What impressed me most was the incredible contrast between the peaceful countryside and the raw volcanic landscape. Everywhere you look, there is something spectacular: endless grasslands, rolling hills, distant mountains, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature on a completely different scale.

One of the highlights of the area is Kusasenri Grassland. Walking across this beautiful open landscape, with horses grazing in the distance and mountains surrounding the horizon, feels almost unreal. It is a perfect place to take photographs, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and simply appreciate the scenery.

Another fascinating stop is the Aso Volcano Museum, where you can learn about the geological history of the volcano and understand the incredible forces that shaped this region.

My personal travel tips:

· Rent a car if possible. Having your own transportation makes exploring the Aso region much easier.
· Visit Kusasenri and allow yourself enough time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing through.
· Wear comfortable walking shoes, as some areas have uneven volcanic terrain.
· Bring a jacket, even on sunny days. The weather can be quite different at higher elevations.
· Check the volcanic alert level and crater access information before your visit. Mount Aso is an active volcano, and access restrictions can change.
· Never cross safety barriers or enter restricted areas.
· Keep a safe distance from grazing horses and respect the surrounding nature.
· Bring some snacks and water, especially if you plan to explore the walking trails.

Important note for travellers: The Nakadake crater access has been subject to restrictions due to volcanic activity. As of the latest information available for November 2026, Kusasenri remains accessible, while the crater area is restricted. Always check the official updates before travelling.
