Kunimigaoka (Kunimigaoka / 國見ヶ丘) is located in Takachiho Town, northwestern Miyazaki Prefecture, at an elevation of about 513 meters. It is not only a Michelin Green Guide Japan-starred observation point but also one of Kyushu's most famous spots for viewing the "Sea of Clouds" (Unkai) and breathtaking sunrises. Kunimigaoka, located in Takachiho Town, northwestern Miyazaki, is an observation deck at an altitude of approximately 513 meters🌞. From here, you can see the five peaks of Mt. Aso to the west, the Sobo mountain range to the north, and the Takachiho Basin and Gokase River to the east, offering a breathtaking view✨ Specifically, from late September to early December, if conditions are right, the Takachiho Basin becomes covered in layers of clouds, creating a dreamlike landscape resembling a traditional ink wash painting! Additionally, this is a historic site tied to Japanese mythology, with stone statues of ancient deities standing around the observation deck! Mythological Background: The name Kunimigaoka originates from ancient Japanese myths. The Lookout of Emperor Jimmu's Grandson: Legend has it that Takeiwatau-no-Mikoto (the deity of Aso Shrine), grandson of Emperor Jimmu, stopped here while governing Kyushu. He stood upon this hill to survey the land (known as "Kunimi"), hence the name "Kunimigaoka." A Symbol of the Land of Myths: Stone statues of Takeiwatau-no-Mikoto and his family are located on the deck, enhancing the atmosphere of the "Tenson Korin" (Descent of the Sun Goddess's Grandson) legends. Key Highlights & Sights 1. The Spectacular "Sea of Clouds" (Unkai) Kunimigaoka's most famous sight is the sea of clouds at autumn dawn. When it occurs, the Takachiho Basin is completely submerged in thick white clouds, with the surrounding mountain peaks appearing like islands, creating a true wonderland. Best Viewing Period: Late September to late November (Autumn). Best Viewing Time: Dawn to shortly after sunrise (Approx. 6:00 AM - 7:30 AM). Conditions for Formation: · Large temperature difference between day and night. · Little to no wind in the early morning. · High humidity and clear weather. 2. 360-Degree Panoramic View Even without the clouds, Kunimigaoka is an excellent observation deck: Takachiho Basin and Rice Terraces: Overlook the settlements and the generations-old rice terraces (part of a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System). The Five Peaks of Aso: Looking west toward Mt. Aso in Kumamoto, the ridge profile resembles a reclining Buddha, known as "Aso's Nirvana Statue." Sobo and Katamuki Mountains: To the east and northeast, you can see the peaks of Mt. Sobo and Mt. Katamuki, both among Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. If you travel to Takachiho, it's worth waking up early to enjoy this dreamlike scenery unique to Miyazaki 😊 Notes for Viewing the Sea of Clouds Keep Warm: Early morning temperatures at the summit can be extremely low (often dropping below 10°C in autumn). Be sure to prepare a thick jacket, scarf, and cold-weather clothing. Check Before Going: Refer to the Japanese weather forecast the night before. If it shows clear, windless weather with significant radiative cooling, the chance of a sea of clouds is highest. Suggested Itinerary: After watching the sunrise and clouds at Kunimigaoka, you can visit core Takachiho attractions like Takachiho Gorge (boating), Takachiho Shrine, and Ama-no-Yasu-kawara. 🚶 Access · (By Car) About 1 hour from JR Nobeoka Station. About 18 minutes from the "Hinokage Fukaku IC" of the Kyushu Chuo Expressway. · (Public Transport) From JR Nobeoka Station, take the bus to "Takachiho Bus Center." After getting off at the final stop, transfer to the bus for "Takachiho - Gokase Town Hospital," get off at the "Oshikata Station" bus stop, and walk for about 47 minutes (approx. 2.7 km).

Visiting Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Japan, is an experience that makes you realise just how powerful and beautiful nature can be. This is not an ordinary mountain – it is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas, with dramatic landscapes, vast green fields, volcanic smoke, and breathtaking panoramic views.

What impressed me most was the incredible contrast between the peaceful countryside and the raw volcanic landscape. Everywhere you look, there is something spectacular: endless grasslands, rolling hills, distant mountains, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature on a completely different scale.

One of the highlights of the area is Kusasenri Grassland. Walking across this beautiful open landscape, with horses grazing in the distance and mountains surrounding the horizon, feels almost unreal. It is a perfect place to take photographs, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and simply appreciate the scenery.

Another fascinating stop is the Aso Volcano Museum, where you can learn about the geological history of the volcano and understand the incredible forces that shaped this region.

My personal travel tips:

· Rent a car if possible. Having your own transportation makes exploring the Aso region much easier.
· Visit Kusasenri and allow yourself enough time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing through.
· Wear comfortable walking shoes, as some areas have uneven volcanic terrain.
· Bring a jacket, even on sunny days. The weather can be quite different at higher elevations.
· Check the volcanic alert level and crater access information before your visit. Mount Aso is an active volcano, and access restrictions can change.
· Never cross safety barriers or enter restricted areas.
· Keep a safe distance from grazing horses and respect the surrounding nature.
· Bring some snacks and water, especially if you plan to explore the walking trails.

Important note for travellers: The Nakadake crater access has been subject to restrictions due to volcanic activity. As of the latest information available for November 2026, Kusasenri remains accessible, while the crater area is restricted. Always check the official updates before travelling.
