Asahikawa, Hokkaido's second largest city, was founded in the late 19th century as a military post and has grown into an industrial and cultural center. The city has strong ties to the Ainu people and is famous for its crafts, agriculture, and food such as ramen and dairy products. With its cold weather and heavy snowfall, Asahikawa has a distinctive winter festival.
