RV Self-Drive Tour of the Western Sichuan Mini Loop
RV Self-Drive Tour of the Western Sichuan Mini Loop: 4 Days Encountering Snowy Mountains, Grasslands, and Starry Skies
From the Chengdu Plain to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, this route fulfills all your imaginations of Western Sichuan.
The first time I drove an RV into the Western Sichuan Plateau, looking through the spacious front windshield at the endless snowy mountains, vast grasslands, and winding roads ahead, I knew this would be a soul-stirring journey. We spent four days completing this condensed mini loop of Western Sichuan’s essence, capturing the elegance of Mount Siguniang, the fantasy of Moxi Park, the magnificent sunset at Yuzixi, and the grandeur of Gongga Snow Mountain all in one trip.
Day 1: Chengdu → Mount Siguniang → Danba
Setting off from Chengdu early in the morning, our RV followed the winding road toward Mount Siguniang. Along the way, urban landscapes gradually gave way to towering mountains, and breathing the increasingly fresh air lifted our spirits.
The scenery at Shuangqiao Valley in Mount Siguniang is breathtaking. We took an eco-friendly shuttle deep into the valley, passing by spots like Penjingtan and Wuse Mountain. At an altitude of 3,500 meters, the snow-capped mountains reflected in the lakes created a beauty that no camera could fully capture. Around 3 p.m., we left Shuangqiao Valley and continued on to Danba.
Traveling by RV allowed us to flexibly control our sightseeing time at Mount Siguniang, avoiding the time constraints of group tours. Arriving in Danba at dusk, we settled in a quiet parking area, enjoyed views of the Tibetan villages from afar, prepared a simple dinner inside the RV, and savored the tranquility of the mountains.
Day 2: Danba → Moxi Park → Yuzixi → Xinduqiao
After breakfast, we headed to Jiaju Tibetan Village, known as “China’s Most Beautiful Village.” The village climbs layer by layer along the Dajin River Valley, stretching up to the foot of the Kapama Peaks. Tibetan-style houses scattered among green trees, with smoke curling from chimneys, together with the valley, streams, and snowy peaks, formed a pastoral idyll.
Next, we drove to Moxi Park, dubbed the “Alien Planet.” Wearing bright clothes here makes for stunning photos. Entering the park felt like stepping into another world, with layers of gray stone forests showing different hues under shifting light and shadow. We strolled along the trails, marveling at nature’s craftsmanship and capturing many amazing photos.
In the afternoon, we went to Yuzixi, an excellent spot to watch the sunset on the golden mountains. As the sun set, its afterglow bathed the snowy peaks, creating the magnificent “Sunlight on the Golden Mountain” scene. At that moment, all the travel efforts felt worthwhile.
As night fell, we arrived in Xinduqiao, known as the “Photographer’s Paradise.” We parked the RV in a designated area, enjoyed dinner under the starry sky, and planned the next day’s itinerary.
Day 3: Xinduqiao → Gongga Mini Loop
Today was the highlight of the trip—the Gongga Snow Mountain mini loop. Gongga Snow Mountain, known as the “King of Sichuan Mountains,” stands at 7,556 meters, surrounded by many peaks over 6,000 meters, offering spectacular scenery.
We set off early from Xinduqiao to Quanhua Beach. Here, spring water rich in chemicals creates chemical precipitates on the surface, forming terraces over 900 meters long and more than 100 meters wide, cascading down the mountain. Each terrace holds a dozen or so colorful pools of various sizes and shapes, with aquatic plants and stone flowers, like a fairyland descending to earth.
In the afternoon, we headed to Lenggacuo Lake. Passing through shrub-covered valleys up to the mountain pass, the majestic Gongga Mountains stood behind us. Walking away from Gongga Mountain, the elevation rose and the view widened. At the lake, we found the best photography spot to capture Gongga Mountain’s ever-changing beauty.
If energy is low, consider horseback riding up and down the mountain, costing about 200 RMB per person one way. At dusk, we returned to Xinduqiao, reliving the day’s awe-inspiring experiences inside the RV.
Day 4: Xinduqiao → Zheduo Mountain → Luding Bridge → Ya’an → Chengdu
On the last day, we left Xinduqiao early. Along the way, we admired Zheduo Mountain, known as the “First Pass of Kham,” standing at 4,298 meters and serving as an important geographical boundary.
Next, we arrived in Luding and made a special stop at the famous Luding Iron Chain Bridge. Stepping onto this historic bridge built in 1706 and overlooking the rushing Dadu River, we couldn’t help but admire the bravery of the Red Army’s historic capture of Luding Bridge.
Then we passed through Ya’an, a city famous worldwide for its “Ya Rain, Ya Women, and Ya Fish,” marking a perfect end to our Western Sichuan mini loop journey.
RV Travel Tips
Altitude Sickness Prevention: If you have never been to high altitudes, it is recommended to undergo a thorough physical examination before entering the plateau. From the moment you decide to travel to the plateau, consider increasing anaerobic exercise to build some tolerance to low oxygen conditions.
Essential Items:
- The temperature difference between morning and night in high-altitude areas can reach 15–20°C, so bring enough warm clothing.
- Prepare UV protection products.
- Common medications: respiratory infections are common, so bring antibiotics; for gastrointestinal issues, bring ciprofloxacin or sulfonamides.
RV Considerations:
- Western Sichuan’s road conditions are complex; it is recommended to choose an RV model with a capacity of 6 people, equipped with a refrigerator, shower, toilet, air conditioning, and induction cooker.
- Learn about campsite locations and facilities in advance; some campsites may require reservations.
- In high-altitude areas, pay attention to RV fuel and water supply.
Best Travel Time: October is one of the most beautiful seasons in Western Sichuan, with colorful autumn foliage and relatively stable weather. Our trip took place in October, coinciding with the most beautiful autumn scenery.
Although this Western Sichuan mini loop lasts only four days, it encompasses the essence of Western Sichuan—snowy mountains, grasslands, Tibetan villages, and stone forests—each scenery leaving a lasting impression. RV travel allows us to control the pace freely and stop anytime to enjoy the views along the way, making it the ideal way to explore Western Sichuan.
