Everyone says September is the least crowded, but they released a double-entry ticket this year, and it was seriously so crowded that the queuing was exhausting!! 🙂‍↕️ Entered the park at 10:00 AM. Every ride had a long line, so I only chose a few recommended ones~ · ✅ Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey: I thought it was all 3D, but it actually combines some real-life sets. Personally, I feel it's the most fun ride in the North Loop! ✅ Decepticoaster: For those with a fear of heights, the initial ascent doesn't have much psychological pressure since you can't see outside. The catapult acceleration is really thrilling. After the whole ride, I felt lightheaded and incredibly dizzy. I recommend riding on an empty stomach~ ✅ Jurassic Flyers: It's okay. There's not much sense of weightlessness, and it's very relaxing to ride—you can even open your arms. It's just that the scenery design isn't that great. ✅ Jurassic World Adventure: Personally, I don't think it's worth waiting that long. The experience is very short. When it's crowded, you can prioritize other rides. ✅ Despicable Me Minion Mayhem: I don't know if it was a side effect from the roller coaster, but the whole time I felt like my neck was being whipped around and I was incredibly dizzy. It's a ride I really regret going on. ✅ Transformers: Battle for the Allspark: Remember to take your glasses. It was unexpectedly fun! Plus, I went near 10:00 PM and only waited about 20 minutes. ✅ The Lost Tomb: This had the longest line. There were a lot of jump scares. Being a coward, I just walked through quickly, but my friend who has read "The Lost Tomb" thought it was great! · This was my first time attending a theme park Halloween, and the atmosphere was great! The scare zones were so interesting. Even though I'm really a coward, the NPCs would try to scare me even more after realizing I was afraid, haha. It was a great experience. I don't know if it's because there were so many visitors in the park, but during my birthday month, it didn't feel as atmospheric as Disney. I wore a birthday badge, and not even two employees wished me a happy birthday. However, they did give me a birthday noodle dish at Hammond's Restaurant.

Before my first trip to China, I read a ton of advice, but half of it ended up being completely useless. These are the seven things I truly wish I’d known beforehand. 1. Your Phone is More Important Than Your Wallet Almost everything revolves around apps. So, if you're heading out, make sure your phone is fully charged or bring a charger/power bank 😅. We consistently used just three: Alipay — for payments and DiDi (taxi) Trip.com — for hotels, trains, flights, and eSIM AMap — for maps and navigation Plus a translator app. You don't need to download 15 different Chinese apps. This set was enough for several trips across the country. 2. Set Up Your Internet Before You Land Without internet in China, things get difficult almost immediately: calling a taxi, opening a map, showing a reservation, translating a sign, or paying for a purchase. We bought an eSIM through Trip.com in advance. As soon as we landed, we turned it on—and the internet worked right away. 3. Don’t Rely Only on the City Name on Train Tickets This was one of our biggest mistakes 😅. Major cities often have several railway stations: East, West, South, North. Sometimes they are located very far apart. In Wulong, we went to the wrong station and missed our train because of it. 4. Map Distances Can Be Very Deceiving We realized this particularly well in Beijing. On the map, it looked like a short walk from one side of the Forbidden City to Jingshan Park. In reality, the walk took us nearly 2 km and about 40 minutes. That’s why in China, I would always factor in a buffer of time. 5. Book Popular Spots in Advance You can’t just decide to visit certain landmarks on the morning of the same day. For instance, we couldn’t get into the Forbidden City because the slots were already sold out. If a specific place is important to you, check in advance if you need to register or book—especially during peak season. 6. English Won’t Save You We frequently ended up in situations where we couldn’t communicate in English at all. Google Translate with the camera feature is great for menus and signs. When we needed to have a real conversation, we used ChatGPT as a translator. For example, I would say in Russian what I wanted to tell the driver, ChatGPT translated it into Chinese, the driver replied, and I immediately got the translation back. This helped us navigate fairly complex situations without knowing Chinese. 7. Don't Try to Rush Everything China is massive. Even if the distance between two points looks small, you might run into lines, shuttle transfers, another bus, a massive station, or an unexpected detour. Sometimes the best plan in China is to leave yourself a bit of free time. In short, before your first trip, I would definitely: ✅ Set up Alipay ✅ Buy an eSIM ✅ Download AMap ✅ Double-check exact train stations ✅ Book popular attractions ✅ Prepare a translator app ✅ Avoid overscheduling your days And then, China suddenly feels much less complicated than it seems before you arrive. The hardest part is the first couple of days—figuring out how everything works. After that, traveling becomes quite easy.

While many visitors rush upward to capture the towering grand architecture of Longevity Hill, my most cherished memory unfolded along the tranquil, winding banks of Kunming Lake. The biting Beijing morning air carried a sharp, refreshing chill, prompting me to wrap my wool coat tightly around my shoulders as I strolled down the sprawling lakeside promenades. The ancient weeping willows that famously frame the water had surrendered their lush summer green, transforming into delicate, weeping cascades of buttery gold that brushed gently against the rippling lake surface with every passing breeze. Most tourists flock to Badaling, but I headed to Mutianyu—and I didn’t regret it for a second. Just 73 km from the city center, yet it felt like stepping into another world. Quiet mountains, a gentle breeze, and absolutely no lines. By 10:30 AM, I was already standing on the Great Wall, with maybe 10 other people around. 🏯 Granite instead of bricks—feeling the centuries pass Unlike other sections, this part of the wall is built with granite slabs rather than bricks, which explains why it’s so well preserved. Measuring 4–5 meters wide and 7–8 meters high, it feels incredibly solid. As I ran my hand over the stone, I couldn't help but think: these slabs were laid over 600 years ago. Six centuries later, and it’s still standing strong. 🛡️ Double-sided watchholes—something I’d never seen before There are watchholes on both sides of the wall here, allowing defenders to fend off enemies from two directions at once. Standing by one of them and looking down into the valley, I tried to picture the ancient soldiers in battle. Honestly, it gave me goosebumps. 🎢 My route: Cable car, hiking, and a thrilling toboggan ride I took the cable car up to Watchtower 14, then hiked over to Tower 6—passing by 22 towers along the way. Every 100 meters offered a fresh view and a new discovery. When I finally needed a break, I hopped on the open-air toboggan and zoomed down the 1.5 km track. You control your own speed—I went so fast the wind was howling in my ears! It was an absolute blast with just the right amount of thrill. 🌄 The "Big Horn"—now I get the tactical genius The wall takes a dramatic dip into the valley before climbing steeply back up, forming a massive "V" shape. This was intentional: they’d lure the enemy into the lowlands and ambush them from both sides. Pure tactical genius! Plus, the views are out of this world, with lush greenery covering over 90% of the slopes. Word has it that in autumn, this place turns into a vibrant sea of fiery yellows and oranges. 🛤️ Getting there (it's easier than you'd think) I caught a tourist bus from Beijing at 8:00 AM, departing near the Qianmen Street subway station. Following the signs from the subway, I easily found the boarding area with the help of friendly staff in blue vests. Fast forward 2.5 hours, and I was on the Wall. Prices: Entrance fee is 45 RMB. The cable car is 60 RMB one-way, 100 RMB round-trip. The toboggan ride is another 60 RMB. I opted for a combo ticket for 140 RMB (cable car up + toboggan down) and paid by card with zero hassle. Timing: Open until 6:00 PM. I arrived around 10:30 AM, and it was practically empty. By 2:00 PM it started getting noticeably crowded, but it was still way more relaxed than Badaling. 💡 My tried-and-true tips · Bring water and snacks—there are no cafes up top, only near the entrance. I didn't bring any, and by 1:00 PM, I was dying for a drink. · Wear shoes with solid grip—the stone steps can be slippery even when dry. A few bandaids wouldn’t hurt either; I ended up with a blister two hours into my hike. · Pack a windbreaker—it’s much breezier up high than in the city, even during the summer. · The ultimate itinerary: Cable car up to Tower 14, hike to Tower 6, and slide down on the toboggan. But in reality, it turned out to be an adventure! 😅 On social media photos: perfect shots, not a soul, the wall stretching into the distance, mountains and silence. In reality: yes, all of that is there. But there are other details that nobody mentions. What surprised and delighted me: · The climb is a real test of endurance. The steps are steep and endless, especially tough in the heat. But the views at the top are worth every step. · Simatai is less crowded than Badaling. You can actually find a moment to be alone on the wall. I caught such a moment – and it was magical. · The wall here is "alive": uneven stones, steep ascents and descents. You can feel the history in every stone. · The sunset there is absolutely incredible – the sky turns orange-pink, and below, the lights of Gubei Water Town gradually start to glow. The view of the town in evening lights from the wall is something magical. You rarely see this in photos, and that's a shame – it's the most beautiful time. Important tips: we went up at 18:00 – it was still light, so we got to see the wall, the sunset, and the lights coming on. The ticket includes the cable car both ways, which is very convenient. But keep in mind: after the cable car, you still have to walk up to the wall itself, and it's not easy. And one more thing: definitely wear comfortable trekking shoes or sneakers! The stones are very uneven and the descents are steep – I wore sandals and really regretted it. My feet got tired instantly. Also, bring water with you – there's nowhere to buy anything at the top. Reality turned out to be even better than the pictures. Yes, you'll have to work up a sweat. If you're in Beijing and want to visit the Great Wall of China, you have two options: with a tour or on your own. If you want to go on your own, I recommend the Mutianyu section. We specifically left Beijing around 7:00 AM to arrive just before it opened and have time to walk around before the main crowds. Mutianyu currently opens at 7:30 AM, and tickets can be booked up to 30 days in advance on the official website. Getting there from Beijing: We chose the easiest option—a taxi directly from Beijing. On the way there, the driver offered to wait for us there for a few hours and then pick us up. This turned out to be very convenient: no need to wait for the bus or figure out how to get back after the walk. Our driver didn't even charge us for waiting—we only paid for the roundtrip. 🫶🏻 The total cost was 460 yuan. If taxis seem too expensive, there are also direct tourist buses from Beijing. They take about 1.5–2 hours, and a roundtrip usually costs around ¥80–¥140. How much does a visit cost? For two of us, a visit to the wall cost about ₽4,888 (≈ $58 / ≈ ¥390). The price depends on which ticket option you choose: entrance only or adding a shuttle, cable car, and other options. During high season, I would definitely buy a ticket in advance—popular sections have restrictions on the number of visitors. Why it's best to go in the morning: This is probably the most important tip. We arrived just before opening, so there weren't many people at first. Tourists become significantly more numerous later, especially in summer and on weekends. Also, it's easy to spend 3–4 hours on Mutianyu if you don't just want to climb up, take a photo, and leave, but actually walk part of the wall. We walked quite far—roughly toward the twentieth towers. The further you go, the more challenging the climbs become. In some places, the steps are very steep, and after a few of these sections, you clearly understand that the Great Wall of China is more than just a walking path 😅 We spent about three hours on the wall. The only thing we were unlucky with... The weather. There was very thick fog on Mutianyu, and at times visibility was literally twenty meters. So we barely saw those panoramic views where the wall stretches into the distance across green mountains. But even in the fog, the place is impressive in its scale. If you have the option to choose a day, I would definitely check the visibility and cloud forecast before your trip. How I recommend doing it: Depart Beijing – around 6:30–7:00 Mutianyu – opening at 7:30 3–4 hours to the wall Return to Beijing – around lunchtime That still leaves half a day for the city. We visited four small restaurants hidden among the narrow streets. Each stop introduced a different flavour, cooking style and part of Beijing’s culinary history. 🥘 Copper-Pot Hotpot Our evening began with traditional Beijing hotpot served in a copper pot. Thin slices of mutton and beef were cooked in a clear broth, then dipped into a rich sesame sauce. Unlike heavily seasoned hotpots, this version allowed the flavour of the meat to remain the focus. The copper pot, rising steam and shared table also made it feel like much more than an ordinary dinner. 🍝 Handmade Beijing Noodles At another stop, we watched noodles being prepared from scratch in a hutong courtyard. The dish looked simple, but its appeal came from the combination of freshly made noodles and a deeply flavoured sauce. It was the kind of everyday local food that can easily be overshadowed by Beijing’s more famous dishes, yet it was one of the most memorable parts of the evening. 🍘 Beef-Filled Fried Buns A small Muslim restaurant introduced us to another side of Beijing cuisine. The fried buns had a crisp exterior and a juicy beef filling, creating a satisfying contrast in texture. We also tried an old Beijing speciality that is becoming increasingly difficult to find. This stop was a reminder that the city’s food traditions were shaped by several cultural influences, not by one single style of cooking. 🌯 Fresh Spring Pancakes Our final dish was a plate of freshly made spring pancakes. The thin pancakes were filled with vegetables and other ingredients, then rolled and eaten by hand. They were light, colourful and completely different from the rich hotpot that had started the evening. They also made a surprisingly good conclusion to a tour with so many contrasting flavours. Peking duck may be the city’s culinary symbol, but it is only the beginning. Copper-pot hotpot, handmade noodles, fried beef buns and spring pancakes all deserve a place on a Beijing food list. China is literally another planet! 🪐 To ensure a comfortable trip, prepare in advance 👇 🔌 1. Plugs and Adapters: China uses type A and type I plugs. Check if they differ from your country's standards and buy a universal adapter in advance. Hotels don't always provide them. 😉 💵 2. Money and Payment Apps · Exchange some of your money for yuan cash—keep it as a backup. · Download Alipay, verify your passport, and link a foreign card. You can pay in two ways: directly from your card by scanning it or from the built-in wallet—choose what's most convenient! · Download WeChat and set up WeChat Pay as a backup. WeChat is also useful for communicating with guides and hotel staff. 🌐 3. eSIM and Navigation. Google services, YouTube, Instagram, and common messaging apps are blocked in China. · Get an international eSIM with a data plan before your trip (for example, on trip.com, get at least 2 GB per day). With it, Google services and social media will work without a VPN. · Download Amap for navigation. You can add hotels and attractions to your favorites in advance. 🛂 4. Passport. Carry your original passport with you ALWAYS! In China, it is required upon hotel check-in, scanned at the entrance to main squares, at train stations (it works like a train ticket), and in many parks and museums. 🎟️ 5. Attraction Tickets. To ensure everything goes according to plan, I recommend purchasing tickets for attractions in advance online at trip.com, as they offer a variety of discounts. Many things aren't sold at the ticket office. Otherwise, there will be huge lines. I only know one place where we bought tickets at the ticket office—to the panda sanctuary ☝🏼 📕 6. Offline translators. English rarely helps in China (about 5% of the time) 😅. Download Google Translate or Yandex Translate and download offline packages for Chinese, English, and your native language. 🚕 7. Taxis. Install the Didi app—Chinese taxis are inexpensive, and you can pay in cash. 📋 8. Hotel address in Chinese. Print the voucher or save a screenshot of the hotel name and address in Chinese (not English!) to your gallery. This will make it easier for you to give directions to locals if you can't find your hotel on your own (I had this happen, wandering the streets for half an hour, trying every door, and every time it wasn't mine 😁). 🧻 9.
