At the end of June, we traveled to Palermo, the capital of Sicily in southern Italy. We were incredibly lucky to rent an apartment in the old town, located inside a grand mansion that had been converted into a bed and breakfast. It even featured a courtyard and a pool, making it extremely comfortable. The building itself is a traditional three-story Italian square structure, with apartments on three sides and a lobby in the center. By the time we dropped off our luggage, it was almost 3:00 PM. We grabbed some pizza nearby and headed to Quattro Canti in the heart of the old town. It features four Baroque buildings, each adorned with a statue of an Italian monarch (Philip II, III, IV, and V) alongside their corresponding coat of arms, as well as four uniquely designed fountains. The eight small streets radiating from the square are packed with shops, street vendors, and restaurants selling everything from clothing and shoes to local specialties, fresh produce, beer, beverages, bread, and desserts. Street performers played music in the square, and tourists danced and sang along freely, creating a vibrant and bustling atmosphere. Strolling through this area, we saw many buildings and churches from different eras and in various architectural styles, though some had fallen into disrepair. We also enjoyed some reasonably priced and authentically delicious pasta in this neighborhood. On the second day, we continued exploring the old town and visited the must-see UNESCO World Heritage site, Palermo Cathedral. Admission to the main floor is free, while roof access requires a ticket. Originally built in the 3rd century, the church is remarkably well-preserved. Its main dome showcases its transformation from an Arab mosque into a Norman church, with Gothic elements added in the 13th century and Spanish Catalan styles incorporated in the 15th century—truly a living reflection of Spanish history. The cathedral also houses holy relics from the 15th to the 18th centuries; it is an absolutely fascinating church to visit. Afterward, we walked to the Fontana della Vergogna in Piazza Pretoria. Originally built in Florence and later transported here, it features over fifty marble mythological statues, though it is surrounded by a metal fence, so you cannot get too close. Walking further, we arrived at the Norman Palace (Palazzo dei Normanni), the oldest royal residence in Europe. The architecture is a stunning blend of Norman and Byzantine styles and served as the main seat for the Kings of Sicily. We first toured the Royal Apartments, which currently serve as the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. Then, we headed to the Cappella Palatina on the second floor, which is lavishly decorated with glittering gold Byzantine mosaics—absolutely magnificent. Finally, we explored the Royal Gardens and the archaeological ruins at the back (included in the combo ticket). On the third morning, we visited the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the largest opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe, featuring a stunningly beautiful domed ceiling. Next, we went to the Teatro Politeama Garibaldi, a Neoclassical circular building with a triumphal arch at its main entrance. Atop the arch sits a highly exquisite bronze statue of Apollo and Euterpe riding a chariot drawn by six horses. After lunch (following the Spanish meal schedule where lunch is after 2:00 PM and dinner is after 9:00 PM), we walked toward the waterfront and reached the pier to enjoy the ocean breeze. On the fourth day, we joined a day tour of archaeological ruins, heading to the ancient city of Agrigento. We passed through the old town, hopped off for half an hour to shop for local crafts and specialties (which was totally optional), and visited the 11th-century Norman Cathedral of St. Gerland (St. Orlando). Next was the Valley of the Temples, a World Heritage site. One temple is still quite well-preserved, while others are mostly just remaining columns. However, back in the 5th century, this was the most prosperous city in the Mediterranean, leading to the excavation of many historical artifacts. We ended the day sunbathing on a beautiful beach and taking a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean Sea. The crystal-clear blue water was the ultimate way to beat the heat. On our fifth day, we enjoyed some coffee at the apartment before heading out to the city's largest market, La Vucciria. Here, you can find spices from locally and around the world, as well as ham, sausages, cheese, truffles, sauces, fresh meat, produce, street food stalls, restaurants, and handicrafts. We dined on Spanish Tapas, Iberian Ham, and Fideuà (a noodle dish cooked in an iron pan, similar to Spanish seafood paella). We also drank fresh fruit juice and were so stuffed we could barely move, which made walking around the market the perfect way to digest. Leaving the market, we made our way to Palazzo Butera, a 17th-century Baroque palace facing the Mediterranean Sea that has now been transformed into an art museum.

I don't like constantly rushing from one place to another when traveling. Instead of a minute-by-minute itinerary, I prefer to surrender my time completely to the streets, embarking on a slow, aimless wander. Sicily seems to inherently possess a low-saturation, vintage aesthetic. The sunshine, sea breeze, and ancient stone walls here are just like the charming grainy texture of a Fuji NC filter in a camera. When we fold together fragments from different perspectives, this island's montage begins to play. 🎬 Fig 1: Natural Epic and Human Bathing Ground The upper half is a bird's-eye view of Isola Bella, with the sea displaying a deep, tranquil blue; the lower half shows the lively, bustling bodies on Cefalù beach. The grandeur of natural landscapes and the everyday hustle of secular life are roughly juxtaposed here, yet surprisingly harmonious. 🍊 Fig 2: The Texture of Life Through an 85mm Lens Through the broken stone window, an endless stretch of orange rooftops can be seen in the distance. But when the perspective zooms in, I prefer to use an 85mm lens to capture the macro details full of life's texture: the peeling paint on the wall in front of the town church, and the tangerines and lemons piled high on the street corner fruit stall. Faith and survival share the same neighborhood here. 🕊️ Fig 3: Relaxation is Sharing a Rock with a Seagull True "relaxation" cannot be faked. It belongs to the girl on the beach engrossed in her paperback, oblivious to her surroundings; it belongs to the seagull that happened to flap its wings and fly past the camera; and it belongs to the breakwater, dyed warm gold by the sunset. Here, the passage of time is not measured. 🏛️ Fig 4: Ruins of Myth, Clothesline of the Mundane This is the most captivating metaphor in Sicily for me. In front of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the bronze statue of Icarus with broken wings lies fallen on the dry earth, the glory of ancient Greece long turned to ruins; while in the lower part of the frame, in the narrow, cramped alleys of the old town, residents' bedsheets and clothes flutter in the wind. The gods have fallen, but mortals continue to live vibrantly. By measuring the world with the logic of cinema, travel is no longer just a simple arrival, but a grand, tension-filled narrative. 📸
