November, Heze East Station.

November, Heze East Station.

In early November, I arrived at Heze East Station leisurely in the autumn breeze. It was a morning caressed by the faint autumn breeze. There was a hint of coolness in the air, as if it was the delicate brushstrokes of nature, outlining a touch of freshness on the slightly cool canvas. But this chill did not in the least dispel the warmth that filled the station. It was like a ray of sunshine in winter, gently enveloping the hearts of every traveler. Heze East Station, a treasure of modern architectural art, shines brightly in the morning light with its streamlined appearance and futuristic design, like a shining pearl inlaid on the earth. The curved glass on the top of the station cleverly captures the soft light of the morning sun, making everything inside the station bright and vivid. With the sound of clear whistles, high-speed trains whiz by like arrows shot from a bow, shuttling across the rails. They are not only a means of transportation, but also a bridge connecting this place with distant dreams. Every train carries the hopes and aspirations of countless people. They cut through the sky, connecting cities and villages, reality and dreams. In this November full of stories, Heze East Station is not only a transportation hub, but also a stage that witnesses the warmth and coldness of the world and records all kinds of life. It tells the story of every traveler in its own way, and brings together these bits and pieces into a moving hymn to autumn.

Welcome to Heze Tourism

Welcome to Heze Tourism

Heze, an ancient city located in southwestern Shandong, may not have the hustle and bustle of first-tier cities, but it hides the most vibrant local life—it is the "Peony Capital of China," with a national feast of peonies in spring; the "Hometown of Opera," where you can hear a thousand-year story in bangzi opera; the "Hometown of Water Margin," where the hometown of Song Jiang holds heroic legends; and also a "City of Cuisine," where a bowl of mutton soup can warm your heart. If you plan a 4-day, 3-night in-depth trip with a budget of around 5,000 yuan (estimated for one person with moderate spending), this guide will help you avoid pitfalls, save worries, and pack all the "essence" of Heze into your memories. --- 📅 Itinerary Overview & Budget Allocation (Per Person) - *Total Budget*: About 4,800-5,200 yuan (flexible adjustment, core experience unchanged) - Transportation (round trip + local): 800-1,000 yuan - Accommodation (3 nights): 600-900 yuan (budget/characteristic homestay) - Meals (three meals + snacks daily): 900-1,200 yuan - Tickets (main attractions): 400-500 yuan - Others (experiences/souvenirs): 300-500 yuan - Recommended Season: Mid-April (peony blooming season, a must-see!), Autumn (September-October, cool and pleasant, perfect for slow travel) - Itinerary Keywords: Peony (spring exclusive), Water Margin culture, Yellow River wetlands, intangible cultural heritage cuisine, Yellow River old course scenery 🚗 Day 1: Arrive in Heze → City Exploration → Caozhou Peony Garden (spring must-see) → Old Town Night Market Morning: Arrive in Heze & adapt to the city - Transportation - If departing from nearby cities (like Jinan, Zhengzhou), high-speed rail is recommended (Heze East Station/Heze Station, second-class seat about 100-200 yuan); if from farther cities, fly to Jinan/Zhengzhou then transfer to high-speed rail (keep total transport cost within 800 yuan). - After arrival, take a taxi to the city hotel (about 15-20 yuan). Recommended to stay in Heze Old Town (Mudanyuan District) *close to attractions and food streets, convenient for travel. Today's estimated cost: Transport 40 yuan + Accommodation 200 yuan + Ticket 40 yuan + Meals 80 yuan ≈ 360 yuan 🚣 Day 2: Water Margin Culture Tour → Song Jiang's Hometown → Sun Bin Tourism City → Yellow River Wetland Park Morning: Explore "Song Jiang's Hometown · Water Margin Heroes City" - Highlights: Yuncheng County in Heze is the hometown of Song Jiang and Chao Gai from "Water Margin." This 4A-level scenic area restores Song Dynasty architecture, including Yuncheng County Government Office, Sun Erniang Inn, Wulong Courtyard, and 36 other attractions, plus intangible cultural heritage performances (like Shandong Kuaishu storytelling, Zhuizi opera). - Ticket: 60 yuan (half price for students) - Tips: Walk through courtyards with blue bricks and gray tiles, listen to guides telling Water Margin stories (recommended to hire a guide to avoid superficial visits); afternoon timed performances like "Heroes Welcome Guests" and "Wu Song Fights the Tiger" live shows. Afternoon: "Sun Bin Tourism City" to experience military strategy wisdom - Highlights: A themed area commemorating the Warring States military strategist Sun Bin (from Juancheng), including Sun Bin Memorial Hall, Yicheng Temple (Buddhist culture), Yangzuo Joint Tomb (heroic legend), suitable for history lovers or quiet visits. - Ticket: 40 yuan (combo tickets may be cheaper) - Tips: Climb high to overlook the ancient-style buildings, visit the ancient weapons exhibition in Sun Bin Memorial Hall, and in the evening buy handmade coarse cloth or paper cuttings (Heze intangible cultural heritage) at Juancheng Old Street outside the scenic area. Evening: "Yellow River Wetland Park" to watch sunset and migratory birds - Highlights: Heze is the first stop of the Yellow River entering Shandong. The wetland park preserves the original ecological reed marshes and mudflats. In autumn and winter, migratory birds like wild geese and wild ducks rest here, perfect for walking and photography. - Ticket: Free (some areas require reservation) - Tips: Walk along the wooden boardwalk to the riverside viewing platform to see the magnificent confluence of the Yellow River and wetlands, or rent a bike to circle the lake (10 yuan/hour). Today's estimated cost: Transport 50 yuan (local taxi/bus) + Tickets 100 yuan + Meals 70 yuan ≈ 220 yuan --- 🌾 Day 3: Yellow River Culture Experience → Caozhou Calligraphy and Painting Academy → Return to City for Shopping Morning: "Yellow River Culture Museum" + "Yellow River Old Course Village" - Highlights: Heze is on the Yellow River alluvial plain with deep Yellow River culture. Afterward, visit "Heze Ginza Mall" or "Jiahe City" to buy souvenirs—recommended are **Peony Seed Oil** (nutritious), **Caozhou Geng Cake** (top-quality persimmon cake), **Juancheng Lu Brocade** (handwoven fabric). Evening: Free time (optional to watch a show or enjoy hot springs) - If budget allows, experience Heze "Maple Leaf Red Hot Springs" (winter only, 150 yuan/person); or watch a Shandong bangzi opera at "Heze Grand Theater" (tickets 30-80 yuan). Today's estimated cost: Transport 60 yuan + Experience 30 yuan + Meals 80 yuan + Souvenirs 100 yuan ≈ 270 yuan --- 🛍️ Day 4: Slow Travel Wrap-up → Heze Morning Tea → Return Trip Morning: Experience "Heze Morning Tea Culture" - Heze people take breakfast seriously. Recommended places: "Peony Hotel Morning Tea" or "Old Heze Porridge Shop," order **Oven-baked Flatbread with Beef** (crispy flatbread + braised beef), **Eight Treasure Porridge** (mixed grains), **Savory Tofu Pudding** (Heze specialty, savory style more authentic), about 15-20 yuan per person. Noon: Last meal before departure - Go to "Heze Old Street" for **Water-fried Buns + Spicy Pepper Soup** (local daily staple), or take away some **Chenji Yam** (Heze specialty, great for stewing or steaming, very soft). Today's estimated cost: Meals 50 yuan + Transport 30 yuan ≈ 80 yuan --- 💡 Practical Tips & Notes 1. Peony Blooming Season: Mid-April is the best viewing time (around Grain Rain). If visiting other times, substitute Peony Garden with "Fulong Lake Ecotourism Area" (lake view + hot springs) or "Fangshan Tourism Area" (spring and autumn ancestral worship culture). 2. Transportation: Heze attractions are scattered; local taxis (starting fare 8-10 yuan) or ride-hailing apps are recommended; for distant spots like Yellow River Wetlands, car rental (about 200 yuan/day, carpooling cheaper) is advised. 3. Accommodation: Old Town offers good value; book homestays early in off-season for discounts; beware of mosquitoes in summer and bring warm clothes in winter. 4. Food Pitfalls: Avoid "internet-famous" shops at scenic spots; prioritize local-favorite stalls (like mutton soup shops where many local elderly queue). 5. Souvenirs: Peony-related products (flower tea, essential oils), Juancheng Lu Brocade, Cao County Hanfu (Heze Cao County is the largest Hanfu production base in China, prices lower than online!). Heze is a city to savor slowly—its beauty lies not in grand attractions, but in the steam rising from a bowl of mutton soup, the morning dew on peony petals, and the shouts in the old street alleys.

National Color Peony!

National Color Peony!

1️⃣ Caozhou Peony Garden is one of the largest peony gardens in the world with the most varieties. 2️⃣ You must visit the Baihua Garden, where the Centennial Peony King is located. It has the most complete collection of peony varieties, and the peony flowers are bigger than your face. 3️⃣ The Gujin Garden, known as the "Garden of Ten Thousand Flowers Village," has a history of over 500 years and houses rare and precious peony varieties. After feasting your eyes, let's feast our stomachs. The University Town is very lively, with many chain restaurants and cafes. I really like the Yinzuo Hutong, which offers a wide variety of snacks. The snack street on Dongfanghong Street has a lot to offer, and you can also stroll along the main street of Heze. Mutton soup is a must-try, with many restaurants offering both red and white soup versions. Taxi drivers all know about Haijia and Shajia, and the prices are reasonable! In the morning, you can have a bowl of Hu La soup with Heze's unique Mian Pao Zi, and then take a stroll around the small square, where you can see people practicing swordplay, Tai Chi, and square dancing... Passing through your city, Heze.

Passing through your city, Heze.

In November, the messenger of winter quietly stepped into this new week, like a painter in a silver gauze, adding a touch of coolness to the ancient city. In the morning, pedestrians on the street wrapped their collars tightly and quickened their pace, as if racing against time. They stopped briefly in this ancient city, perhaps not to find a specific destination, but to capture the unique charm of tranquility and coolness at this moment, like capturing a fleeting morning dew. Walking slowly along the street, the trees on both sides have already put on their golden dresses, and the fallen leaves are like coins forgotten by time, piece by piece, layer by layer, paving a golden path to the past. Every step is accompanied by a subtle but clear sound, the sound of the changing seasons, which is particularly loud in this quiet morning, as if nature is whispering, telling the story of the cycle from spring to autumn to winter. Heze, an ancient city with a thousand-year history, is more simple and solemn in the cold wind of winter. Between the blue bricks and black tiles, there is a faint smell of fireworks, intertwined with the smoke rising in the distance, forming a warm and slightly desolate picture. People in this busy crowd occasionally slow down and look up at the ancient buildings that have stood the test of time, as if they have found their own moment of peace in the fleeting time. Goodbye Heze, maybe I will come back to see you again!

Caozhou Ancient City.

Caozhou Ancient City.

✈️ Heze, the ancient city of Caozhou, has built a new Caozhou Old City. It is actually a combination of several streets. 1️⃣ On Qixi Festival, I strolled around looking for food. It seems that every city has an old street, and Heze's old street is called "Caozhou Ancient City." 2️⃣ Caozhou Ancient City is located in the old city of Heze, Shandong Province. From the Northern Wei to the Jin Dynasty, the ancient city of Chengshi existed for more than 600 years, and from the Jin Dynasty to the Republic of China, Caozhou Ancient City existed for more than 800 years. Caozhou was established in the first year of the Northern Zhou Dynasty (578 AD). Due to the impact of the Yellow River floods, the location of the state city has changed several times. In the 11th year of the Ming Dynasty (1446 AD), Fan Xizheng, the governor of Caozhou, planned the city, divided the residential areas, established government offices, and built Confucian schools. Streets were initially formed, laying the foundation for the old city of Heze. 3️⃣ It is said that the historical old city of Heze was square, with a side length of 3 li and a circumference of 12 li. There were 7 vertical and 7 horizontal streets in the city, intersecting like a chessboard. The intersections were called corners, and the streets were divided into sections, collectively called alleys. In the Qing Dynasty, there were 32 east-west alleys and 26 north-south alleys, totaling 58. In the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933 AD), the streets were unified and named, with 36 east-west streets and 36 north-south streets, totaling 72. 4️⃣ I asked a local colleague, who said that this ancient city was also rebuilt later, with complete buildings and towers, various internet-famous snacks, and photo spots. Many newly built ancient cities have become snack and travel photo markets. It is more interesting to have a little historical and cultural mix. Otherwise, you can only search online and learn later. Let's see if this ancient city is a real ancient city.

Winter Charm in Ancient Caozhou, History Dancing with Snow In the early morning of Caozhou Ancient City, blue bricks and black tiles are covered with a thin frost. The Dingtao Han Tomb Site under the clear winter sky exudes a strong sense of historical weight. Intangible Cultural Heritage Craftsmanship, Cultural Warmth in Winter Visit the Juancheng Lu Brocade Workshop, where the rhythmic sound of the master’s loom creates traditional patterns in the interlacing threads. In the Yuncheng Guzheng Making Workshop, artisans focus on tuning, the warmth of the instruments resisting the cold outside the window. These intangible cultural heritage experiences add depth to your journey. Caozhou Lantern Festival, A Brilliant Night Without Darkness The Caozhou Lantern Festival before and after the Spring Festival is the grand finale of winter. Peony-shaped lanterns bloom in the night, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern light and shadow to present a spectacular scene of "fire trees and silver flowers lighting up the night."
