Beautiful and historic ryokan with delicious food. Great hotspring, which is 700 years old! Very peaceful area with a nice waterfall and great hiking trails + a ski slope nearby. You can also walk to the other ryokans and try out different hotsprings.

Stayed at Nishiya for two nights in March as part of a 5-day trip to Yamagata with the Tohoku rail pass and was highly impressed by the historic hot spring (700 years old!) and the delicious meals. Meal portions were very generous and the quality of the ingredients were very high. The "all you can drink" bar included with the meal was also a nice addition to the package. It was great value for the experience that we received. The service level is intentionally set at a minimal level (compared to a traditional ryokan) to provide guests with the most amount of freedom. We appreciated this and it was nice to be able to enjoy the hot springs when we wanted and relax in our room without coordinating with the staff. Only challenge I had was regarding the local phone number I provided, which was my family member's instead of my own since I did not have a local phone number. I proactively coordinated with the staff regarding my time of arrival, etc. ahead of time and arrived at the shuttle bus pick up location on time, but there was a lot of confusion when the staff were unable to get through to me with the phone number that I provided. It would be great if Nishiya could provide an alternative option for international guests that may not have a local number. Overall, highly recommended if you are looking for an authentic and historical hot spring getaway with amazing Wagyu beef meals!

最古の湯滝風呂が築300年以上、本館が100年以上経過しているという重厚かつ趣のある茅葺き母屋の宿。 そしてその名も「滝湯」の通り、昼夜問わず、往年と変わらないであろうドバドバ大量に降り注ぐ温泉。 この宿に泊まるということは、言わば『文化財に泊まる（泊まらせて頂く）』という体験であり、日本ならではの温泉文化を感じ、残し、伝えることへのささやかな協力或いは賛同というべきものです。 白布大火を免れ、唯一当地に残った建築遺産は、失われれば、おそらく二度と再現などできません。ましてや経済合理性から考えれば、そもそも維持することですら相当の覚悟と信念がなければ適わないでしょう。商売だけ考えたら建て替えちゃった方がよっぽどラク。 それでも、幾多の限界の中でも工夫を凝らして快適性を高め、そして磨き上げられた木の空間、温泉にしても雨の日も豪雪の日も、高温源泉と沢水の絶妙な調整を毎日行い、手数を掛けて、温泉文化を守り育んでいる宿といえます。 暑い日や寒い日は冷暖房を入れても、多少、部屋でも感じるでしょう。トイレは共同だったり（離れ、にはトイレ付もありますが..）湯宿は離れ、だったり、しますが、それらすべてが日本ならではの温泉文化です。 部屋には虫対策グッズをはじめとした事前準備のアメニティ、廊下には共用の冷蔵庫を設置、食事は、食事処でバイキングスタイルの併用、など運用の効率化も図りながら、大事な、宿そのもの、そしてお湯を最優先で守っているように感じます。 食事は大変美味しいです。米沢牛をフィーチャーしつつ、前菜やトッピング、またお酒もビール・日本酒・ワインなど各種フリーフローのものが準備されています（オプションで有料のものもあります）。 温泉については、言うまでもなく素晴らしい体験です。 ほのかに舞う硫黄とともにドバドバ流れる石膏泉。 これだけの「圧倒的な湯量のもつ威力・効力」は、日本各地の温泉を巡った中でも深く心に残るものであり、当地ならではの文化です。 湯上がりスベスベです。 チェックアウト時、温和しい看板ネコたちにお別れの挨拶をしながら、再び現代へと還ることにしましょう！ ※この文化財を守るためにも、必然的に建物・敷地内すべて禁煙（火気厳禁）です。

コロナ解禁になって福島県と長野県旅行で白布温泉西屋決定。(湯がいいことで) プランはじゃぶじゃぶ懐石で泊りました。大浴場入ってみると、洗い場はあるもののシャワーはなく打たせで髪を洗うか、湯船の湯をかけるしか無いのにびっくり。(足元も滑りやすく、段差もあり、慣れるまでにちょっと時間がかかりました。(特に年配の方は滑らないよう注意が必要です。)家族風呂もありますが浸かるだけ。 部屋はトイレ、洗面がなく共同です。食事時間は、夕：18:30～、朝：7:30～と決まっている。しゃぶしゃぶ懐石でしたが、お肉も美味しかった。セルフコーナーでフード(無料)やドリンクは無料と有料がありました。東北の地酒、樽平と初孫があり美味しくいただきました。朝食の量もちょうどで美味しかったです(納豆が美味しかった。大阪にもほしい！！)。部屋は普通ですが、お料理は良かったです。ゆっくりくつろげました。お世話になりました。

立ち寄り湯でおじゃましました。湯滝風呂は高い吹き抜けの若干狭さと昔を感じる風情ある湯殿です。浴槽は小ぶりな御影石の浴槽で熱めのいい湯でした。短時間の入浴でスッキリし汗ダクになりました。三本の湯滝は高い位置からドバドバと多量に温泉が流れ落ち打たせ湯がとても気持ちイイです。泉質はカルシウム-硫酸塩温泉で源泉かけ流しの良温泉でした。昔を感じる茅葺屋根が立派です。

１０月末に９５歳の母と家族三人で１泊しました。帰る日の朝風呂が余りにぬるくて出られない程だったので、帳場の中年男性に苦情を言ったら、両手を前に押し出して『わかっています』と言う態度で全く謝罪がありません。支払いで帰る際も、同じ男性なのに、自分からは謝罪しません。腹が立ち、家に帰ってから苦情の手紙を女将に出しましたが半月経過しても全く何の返事もありません。宿の不始末に対しては、謝罪がサービス業として当然と思います。これだけ頑固に謝罪しないのは、気位の高い米沢人の気性ですか。他県の私は驚き呆れました。上杉神社を見て養子だった上杉鷹山公も米沢では苦労なさったと思いました。
