Monet Garden Hotel: A Hidden Artistic Gem in Gulangyu Nestled in the heart of Gulangyu’s UNESCO World Heritage site and adjacent to the famous Piano Wharf, Monet Garden Hotel is a timeless masterpiece, shaped by history and artistry. Originally built in 1902, this historic landmark was once the residence of Mr. Bai Dengbi, a pioneering figure in letterpress printing. His family’s legacy embodies the resilience and ambition of Gulangyu’s national capitalists and overseas Chinese of that era, reflecting their deep reverence for education and their enthusiastic embrace of new ideas and cultural movements. After an extensive and meticulous restoration in 2019, the hotel has been reborn, radiating its former glory. Spanning 1,300 square meters, the garden is an enchanting artistic retreat, a dreamlike canvas reminiscent of an Impressionist masterpiece. Towering over the landscape, two century-old Buddhist pines and a grand mango tree stand as silent guardians of the past, their ancient branches bearing witness to countless moments of inspiration. The garden is a sensory delight: • Angel’s trumpets bloom in abundance, their intoxicating fragrance weaving through the air like the bold, vivid strokes of an Impressionist painting. • Osmanthus flowers scatter like tiny golden stars, their delicate sweetness infusing the air with a sense of serenity. • Gardenias, pristine as freshly fallen snow, reflect the minimalist pursuit of purity, embodying the essence of artistic simplicity. At the garden’s heart, a pond teeming with water lilies, mint, and rosemary creates a tranquil haven. Koi fish glide effortlessly through the crystal-clear water, their movements sending ripples across the surface—an abstract dance that captures the essence of fluidity and freedom in art. Renowned international musicians frequently host intimate courtyard concerts, where the interplay of wind, birdsong, and melodies transforms the space into a spontaneous symphony of nature and music. Likewise, acclaimed Chinese painters often retreat here, finding inspiration in the shifting light and shadows. With each stroke of their brush, they immortalize the garden’s fleeting beauty, infusing their works with an enduring passion for art. A Living Art Gallery Inside the hotel, art continues to breathe life into every corner. Each room, with ceilings soaring to an average of 3.5 meters, is a sanctuary of artistic expression. An antique fireplace stands as a silent storyteller, exuding warmth and nostalgia. The rooms are distinguished by Phoenix tree seeds as symbolic emblems, and each is named after a celebrated artist, offering guests a unique immersive experience. • Some rooms echo Monet’s delicate play of light and color, enveloping guests in an ethereal dreamscape. • Others pulsate with the fiery passion of Van Gogh, where bold brushstrokes ignite an emotional intensity. • Some embody the geometric abstraction of Picasso’s Cubism, inviting guests to explore space and form in a revolutionary new way. The Monet Garden Hotel is more than just a place to stay—it is an artistic journey, a haven where history, nature, and creativity converge, offering an experience that is both timeless and transformative.Show More

The location is excellent, the new building has nice rooms - well maintained. However, one should be aware that this building is a photographer hotspot - so that from morning to evening the entire hotel space is overcrowded by external visitors. Some like - some not. Please be aware there is no privacy at all.

It was quite good, impressive villa. But our bedroom was not actually part of the villa... Was a nicely designed added volume withou windows... Something we didn't expect... We wouldn't recommend that room.

Advantages: When you enter the door, you are first greeted by the design of a small indoor courtyard. There is a projection, and the space is very comfortable. The structure of the entire loft is quite exquisite. I personally like this type of room very much. When lying on the bed, the view above is also very broad. There is also a door upstairs. The door opens to steps. Going down the steps leads to the courtyard outside the house. The whole design is quite interesting. The environment around the B&B is also quite pleasant and the atmosphere is very good. It is also close to the east coast, so it is very convenient to watch the sunrise. Disadvantages: First, the default projection position after the projection is turned on is inaccurate, and it was solved after several twists and turns. The second is the design of the bathroom upstairs. The hot water comes very slowly, and the space layout is not very reasonable. Maybe it is more about aesthetics. There is still a distance between the shower room and the place where bath towels and bathrobes are placed, and there are steps in the middle. It is easy to bring water to the ground after taking a shower, which poses a certain safety risk. I think it would be good to at least add an absorbent floor mat, or prepare a special absorbent floor towel after bathing.

The villa environment is very good, the photos are super beautiful, and the facilities are complete. The price/performance ratio on the island is really very good. If I have the opportunity to go there again, I will choose to stay here. It takes about ten minutes to walk from the hotel to the commercial street, which is not very far, but it ensures a quiet place, which is good.

Because we arrived about three hours early, the front desk quickly arranged a room for us. The service was also very good. There were Western and Chinese breakfast options to choose from, which were also delicious. The hotel was also great for taking photos.
