This is a hotel that can not do enough to make sure you have a great stay, the staff are great and friendly , the food is amazing and portions huge and great value, the rooms are okay with basic mod cons expected, it is an old hotel that has had some modernisation, so make some allowances for creaky floors and narrow stairs, but we had a really comfy bed which is always a bonus! We were a large group and they met everyone’s demands … would always recommend them!

Great friendly service. Staff couldn’t do enough to make our stay any better. The hotel was clean and tidy. The bar underneath is a lovely place to have a quiet drink and a chat with family, Food excellent and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend!!!!

Do not overlook this place , I worked and stayed at this hotel doing a lock upgrade and I can honestly say it’s the best hotel I have been at in years just for the welcome and friendly atmosphere the staff all one big family, very homely feel well actually I didn’t want to go home. The food is very good and exceptionally good value for money , good selection of beers very nice bar and function hall /lounge excellent breakfast , from the boss to the housekeepers all go above and beyond what you would expect , I honestly wish Jack Jan and crew the very best in the future and every deserved success many thanks Dean and Tony PS we WILL be back

Had Sunday lunch, customer service was excellent and Sunday lunch lovely especially home made strawberry cheesecake. Really great value. All staff were brilliant. The dining room is beautifully decorated and we were asked several times that everything was okay and did we require anything more

I stayed at the Waverley as the location is close to the start of the C2C and Hadrian cycleway. I checked reviews online and the majority rated it as "Good". The hotel was only partly in working order, but fortunately there was at least a clean bed to sleep in, and a plentiful breakfast. There is a bar serving basic standard bar main meals priced between £12 and £20, but I didn't eat there. Sadly the hotel (it had no lift, just a narrow dark staircase) was very dated with several annoying malfunctioning things. In fact "dated" isn't as accurate as "decrepit". The toilet was extremely small, with a toilet that didn't flush at all, (and no towel rail, only a tiny shelf just big enough for a plastic glass). I told reception and they said they'd fix it but the next day it still took around 6 attempts to get a proper flush. The shower worked but only a tiny flow of water, and there was a small leak from the tray which caused a fair bit of black mould along the tray bottom and the old skirting board. Oddly even when the tap was fully turned off there was a regular nuisance drip. No toilet roll holder, but the holes where it had been were still visible, just left there. Nobody had bothered to even stick a bit of Polyfilla in the holes. Both soap dispensers were empty, I had to use the sachet of shampoo. The light for the shaving mirror was broken. There was no handle on the inside of the door to exit the room. Strange, all the other rooms did have handles. You needed to half turn the key in the lock, then haul the door with some force due to the door weight. Not simple, surely a handle would be in order? Especially for an older person with no strength. The hotel interior upstairs was gloomy, dingy, and fittings were very dated and worn. I detected a constant odour of stale cooking oil. Good points - the staff were all cheerful and friendly. I suspect they'd need to be, the hotel was so dire. The cooked buffet breakfast was basic but hearty. Overall I felt ripped off and shoved into probably the worst room in the hotel, with the hotel hoping to get away with it. I only stayed for 2 nights, and wasn't expecting luxury, but I wouldn't return. I paid £116 for 2 nights. I don't recommend this hotel, and I was overcharged at that price for what I got. £30-40 would maybe be about right. This was one of the smallest - and most dysfunctional - rooms I've ever had in a small hotel. Avoid.

Stayed here for just the one night while in the area for a live music show at nearby theatre. Paid around £55 for a twin room which included a buffet breakfast if I wanted it, so the place is really good value. The room I had (no 22) had everything you need for a short stay & it was all clean & tidy with a comfy bed so I slept well as it was all nice & quiet. Is located a close walk away to the town centre, the train station & the theatre. FYI - hotel has no lifts, although this wasn't an issue for myself, it might be for some people. For the price I paid & what I got I was more than happy & would definitely use again if in the area. Many thanks.

A last minute booking for our group of 16 but we were not disappointed. Janet and her team could not have done more for us. All the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Breakfast is normally served from 7.30 but as we were had to leave much earlier they brought Staff in at 6.00 for us! Great Breakfast, lovely evening meals too. Would definitely return Thanks from all the rally team 👏
