By this time we had driven around 5000 Km and had not stayed in a traditional hotel so it was here we decided it was time to do it. The towns claim to fame, along with Julia Creek, is that Banjo Patterson wrote Waltzing Matilda. As was to be expected the decor was a little jaded but the welcome and food were truly Australian. We were a little concerned that there was a sulphurous smell in the bathroom but realised that they drew their water from an artesian well thousands of feet deep. In all an experience to remember.

Wonderful iconic place to stay in Winton! Meals and entertainment in the beer garden were fantastic and we enjoyed the refreshing hot pool in the beer garden! The staff were also very friendly. Room a standard pub room but clean and tidy and lived the access to the big verandahs.

I loved this. I would describe it as an experience, particularly for those who haven’t stayed at a country pub before! The bed was fine but only a double which was squeezy for us, the furniture seemed to have been repurposed from a high school, the pub perfume of beer was sometimes notable. But overall, what value! A night show in the beer garden (ask for a room facing the other way if you want to go to bed early) was really great entertainment with music, singing, stories and poems. The beautiful old hotel has lovely common spaces including sweeping verandahs.

Historic old joint in town centre. Really great vibe. We were in Room 8, upstairs with verandah overlooking the main street. Many galahs sleep on the power lines right there in front of you. Drinks at the bar fun. Food was great. Eat in Dining Room or out the back. Old country QLD feel. Enjoyed our one night there.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the North Gregory Hotel in Winton and especially its character, which is from the 1950’s. Nice place to stay, good food and evening entertainment. Some of the rooms could do with a little renovation, but considering where you are staying in outback Queensland, it’s very comfortable. Definitely recommend.

This old outback hotel in a dominant position in the main street of Winton , Queensland was worth a look because of its Art Deco architecture but more so for the history. It started in 1879 and replaced in 1899. Two fires in 1916 and 1946 resulted in a new building built in the 1950's. It is famous because in April 1895, the first public offering of "Waltzing Matilda" occurred at the hotel, it was where many of the meetings in the 1920 that saw the beinginnings of Qantas occur and Lynson B Johnson, US president stayed here one night during WW2. Not open when visited but worth a look for the history.

After a walk through town it was time to put the nose bag on and quench the thirst. We decided on this old pub so the six of us settled on lunch and a brew. Huge meals and cold beers. Standard Outback pub dining room and pub meals. Great service. Nice old pub.

Hotel newly owned by a local young couple. The hotel has kept a lot of its originality and history. Meals were fantastic, rooms were spacious. We even had a poet reciting the history of Banjo Patterson, honestly I thought this would be pretty bordering but found it quite fascinating as he explained his entire life. This was provided free by the hotel staff. We then went to the Dinosaur museum and bought a couple of boulder opal necklaces.

Stopped there for an included meal on a tour. Our tour had the choice of fish n chips plus salad or beef sausages , mash, topped with mushy peas. I had a very welcome cold beer. Quick service and good sized meals. Lovely to be seated in the private dining room.
