Property Description
For the explorers, the food lovers and the do it differently-ers. From the outside, Lainston House is a beautiful, Queen Anne red brick hotel with 63 acres of gorgeous grounds in Winchester, Hampshire. But this isn’t your average country house estate. Here you’ll find adventure round every corner, from our walled garden hosting cookery classes and extraordinary events, to walking trails and world-renowned fly fishing in the Test Valley. Redefining country house hotel stays, we invite you to bring your wildest dreams so we can help you tick them off your bucket list. One thing about adventures is they tend to work up a hefty appetite, so it’s fortunate that Lainston House is full of opportunities for feasting. The Avenue restaurant, named after the stunning avenue of lime trees leading up to the house, serves up a tantalizing tasting menu with a BBC MasterChef: The Professionals champion at the helm. Meanwhile, The Wellhouse is one of the only UK restaurants where every dish is cooked by woodfire. Its historic, rustic-luxe atmosphere and deep, smoky flavors make for a truly unforgettable dining experience. Oh and if that wasn't enough to whet your appetite, you can get adventurous with your culinary skills too at Season cookery school. Perfectly located in the heart of Hampshire just 10 minutes from the center of Winchester, Lainston House makes a great base for walking or cycling the South Downs Way, visiting Goodwood, Broadlands, Carfest and also staying the night before you head to Southampton to join your cruise.

Myself and my best friend came for the Avenue restaurants tasting menu. I have no words. The BEST food I’ve ever had. It’s 9 courses of the most perfectly curated cuisine. Everything was excellent…the service was gold standard, drinks were exceptional and the ambiguous was luxury. I’m very impressed. If you’re thinking about it, just do it.

A magical hotel with wonderful dining experiences and a fantastic team who make you feel welcome and special. This was our 40th wedding anniversary and although the Lainston House comes with a 5 star price it provides value at every turn. On our first night we had the tasting menu in the Avenue Restaurant. It was sublime. On our second night we experienced the Wellhouse Restaurant and enjoyed the best Porterhouse Steak I’ve ever eaten. Breakfast each morning was excellent and served in a such a calm setting that it was almost therapeutic. The hotel also offers free to use good quality mountain bikes - which we used to cycle 15kms around the beautiful countryside surrounding Lainston House. They also offer the use of a Tandem Bike which we tried, but only around the hotel grounds!! Lainston House also has a gym and tennis courts although on this visit we ran out of time to try them out. A first class hotel operated by a wonderful team of people. And a particular shout out to Gerry from Guest Relations. She was brilliant and such a wonderful advert for the hotel and the group.

What a wonderful experience! I came for my Birthday with my husband and from start to finish felt pampered and spoilt! Thank you for an amazing weekend, the food, the room and the team were all first class, even the other residents were just so friendly and lovely, especially Paul and his wife who we met dining in The Avenue, celebrating a very special Anniversary! On leaving, we stopped at Stockbridge where there was a classic car event and more excellent dining! Thank you, we will definitely be back!

We had a wonderful time at the Lainston House. The hotel itself is beautiful but what sets it apart is the staff and the food! Both were absolutely exceptional. The Sunday roast in the Wellhouse is simply incredible as is the Avenue restaurant. Ask for the Vivanco Rioja you won’t be disappointed.

A fantastic weekend in a stunning country hotel. I knew it was going to be great from the moment we walked in. A friendly welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Incredible food from masterchef Tom, and brilliant service. Our room was well equipped, comfortable and clean.

I went as a couple with my husband for 2 nights. We had fond memories from years ago staying at the hotel. During our stay we were unable to use the lounge in the daytime as it was reserved for corporate clients, every time we went to use it there was a Reserved sign and the lounge was set up for an event. We then tried to use the bar instead (which is a small library type of room). In this room the hotel staff were selling wedding packages etc to customers, speaking very loudly, so again no peace to sit and relax or have a drink. As it was a sunny during our stay we decided to try and sit outside for some peace and to have family guests join us for lunch. However, there was a corporate barbecue taking place. So during our stay as private guests we had nowhere to sit other than our room or outside in the garden. We had asked some of our family to join us for a light lunch on the Monday, but as the lounge was occupied and the bar busy we sat outside. I do not know where we could have gone at the hotel if the weather had not been good. Apart from no use of the public rooms during the daytime, the general decor was dated and rather shabby, the ladies toilets for the restaurant did not flush properly (I mentioned this to a member of staff) and there was dust in many areas of the hotel. Even in the dining room dust was visible to the naked eye on the wood panelling - as my husband looked at me from his side of the table to where I was sitting he could see dust behind me. The one positive from the stay is that the staff were all polite and helpful. A very disappointing experience and we will not be staying again or recommending this hotel to friends or family. It might be wonderful for corporate clients or wedding parties, by as individuals the hotel did not cater for us.

Booked a lovely room for my daughter’s wedding night. The room looked lovely but was soooo hot. Turns out no A/C. A 5 star hotel with a room at 26+ degrees. Windows open onto airless courtyard. Weak Ceiling fan above a covered 4 poster bed. Not helpful. What a disappointment
