There is a sea view when you open the door. The room is slightly small, clean and tidy, the service is warm, and the breakfast is a standard English breakfast.

The hotel is right next to the sea, and the scenery is pretty good when the weather is good. The facilities are quite decent, and you have to open more than ten doors to get to the highest floor. The most unacceptable thing is that when we went to have breakfast in the morning, we were told that there was no portion for us (the price included two breakfasts). They said they gave me the key when checking in and left without having time to confirm with me. Need breakfast? ? ? The fact is that after I got the key, I said thank you and was about to leave. I saw the waiter was hesitant to speak and didn't say anything in the end. In the end, they only provided us with some milk bread and no hot breakfast. It was really a bad experience. However, after we left our things behind when we checked out, a waitress came out and gave them to us. Thank you very much.

This was the first guest house we’ve stayed in for many years and we were with friends who booked it for all four of us. We’ve no idea of the cost of the overnight stay. We would rate it five star, but if you are disabled or lacking stamina it’s very likely not for you. We were on the third (out of four) floors and there’s steep steps outside just to reach the front door as well as very steep steps and several doors to manage inside. The room was cosy and we got a great nights sleep. The view of the sea was wonderful and the little motion sensor bathroom light that came on when we walked in was genius. Parking isn’t easy to find nearby and like so much of our experience of England, parking is a costly business. It’s easy to believe that they don’t want motorists around England, even disabled drivers get no concessions, it’s not the country I remember - it used to be kind, decent and people had pride in themselves and their country. That’s long gone. We had to order our breakfast by filling out a form the night before and posting the completed form in a box at reception with brekky between 8 and 9am with check out at 10am. The fresh cooked brekky included kippers and smoked salmon. I can’t see ourselves returning to this place as we prefer hotels.

We chose The Riviera for our 4 night honeymoon in beautiful Whitby, and we couldn't have been happier. Zed and Emma keep a lovely, clean, well maintained hotel with stunning views, and they couldn't have been more helpful. Highly recommended. Would definitely return.

My top floor room with dormer window had great views out to sea - the payoff being 73 internal stairs in addition to the dozen from street level! I'd previously stayed at this property so was aware of the stairs and the property owner Emma also messaged me at the time of booking to check that there were no mobility issues. After a minor issue around check-in times, I was able to quickly settle in and found my room to be clean and comfortable with good quality bedding and a generous refreshments tray. Supplementary heating was available if required but I found the room was toasty thanks to the afternoon sun. Breakfast choices were made the previous evening and popped into a box in reception. Breakfast service ran smoothly with clear table allocations, a good supply of filter coffee, high quality items in my full English and branded cereals and preserves. Overall, a pleasant stay and I would certainly stay again.

Very clean, great breakfast, great friendly staff and a fantastic location. It was our 2nd visit and we will definitely be going again. Our room overlook the sea and was great watching the boats and surfers. Parking was only a 2 minute walk from the guesthouse

Went for a romantic week away at this lovely hotel. The owners couldn’t do enough for me. I asked for champers and chocs. Nothing was too much trouble. The new room is stunning and looking at the sea from the shower is a delight. Breakfast has got better. So much choice.

We returned to the Riviera once again for another wonderful stay. Everything was to our expectations, including the food, the views, the comfort of our accommodation and the wonderful hospitality. We’ve already booked again and can’t wait to return.
