During our 10-day hike from Starnberg to Füssen, I do not think that our group enjoyed any lodging more than Zum Eibenwald. This was what we hoped to experience from a traditional Bavarian hotel...a huge deck overlooking the countryside (for a post-hike beer), wonderful Bavarian food and excellent service from Uschi and her staff. She was so welcoming and accommodating - we never met her husband Michael, but he is a terrific chef based on the food that we were served. We even went bowling (and I finished last). Our room was quite large and comfortable. The wifi was good. Our biggest regret is that we couldn't arrange our schedule to allow us more than a single night...another night or two would have been great! Thank you Uschi!

We stayed in the hotel from Thursday to Sunday, in a comfort room, and were not really satisfied overall. The price for two people in a double room with breakfast, 140 euros, is way overpriced. You could do a lot more with it! The Pfaffenwinkel is a beautiful area, green meadows, small forests, mountain views and many lakes. RoomThe room is in the fairly newly built transverse building and is modern. But unfortunately dirty: ancient cobwebs on the corners and the lamps under the ceiling. There was an insect pupa on the curtain that had been hanging there for a while. There was dirt in the corners, not wiped in ages, and the radiator in the bathroom was full of dust, except for the ribs that previous guests had used to hang towels over. And at night, young people hang around in the back yard, directly under the windows of the transverse building, chatting and rattling beer bottles until sunrise. There is no deliberate noise, but with the window open, you can't think of sleeping. Food and drinksThe breakfast was minimalist and the service was just as unmotivated. Tables are assigned by name tag and although the guests at the window seats had long since left by the appropriate time, the tables were not cleared and therefore could not be re-occupied. If you have breakfast later, the eggs are cold, the bread and rolls are monotonous, and from Saturday onwards there were no more Krunshies or yogurt with the muesli. Everything was very, very unloving. The tea is excellent and high quality, but that's it. The WMF coffee machines are also very high quality, but clearly set to be economical. Tip: If you pour a double espresso into a coffee cup and fill the rest of the cup with cafe creme, the coffee tastes OK. Worth mentioningThe service is generally poor. The employees do not seem to enjoy their work at all, neither in housekeeping nor at reception. You are not welcomed as a guest, rather you seem to be a nuisance when chatting. There is no introduction to the building.

I'm often a guest in the Eibenwald I'm happy to be back here every time you get a warm welcome and Michael cooks, how should I put it, just great cooking, our 4-legged friends are no problem. The Daisenberger family keep up the good work, with best regards Andy's hoof care service

NSG Paterzeller Eibenwald 😍 Yew trees are simply very different! From an evolutionary perspective, this tree species is one of the most ancient coniferous plants. It does not form cones but red pseudoberries, it has no resin canals and can regenerate itself through shoots, an ability otherwise only possessed by deciduous trees. The long-fibered, extremely hard and tough wood provided the building material for the legendary English longbows. Ötzi, the glacier corpse frozen for advertising purposes 3300 years ago, also used a yew bow. Yew trees grow extremely slowly and are among our oldest native trees. They survive in amounts of light that would make any other respectable German tree cry tears of despair from its stomata. Apart from the red seed coat, all parts of the plant contain a poisonous alkaloid. Since alkaloids generally taste very bitter, cases of poisoning in humans only occur in exceptional cases. Horses are particularly sensitive to this, the lethal dose is said to be 100-200 g of yew needles. Unfortunately, this does not apply to deer, which see young yews as a delicacy and prevent natural regeneration in our country quite effectively. Most of us only know yews as hedges or as isolated, usually somewhat rachitic, trees in the undergrowth of forests. Anyone who wants to get to know the impressive power of the personality of old yews should definitely visit the Paterzeller Eibenwald nature reserve in the municipality of Wessobrunn in Upper Bavaria. 1,500 older yews with a diameter of up to one meter grow there on 88 hectares. A 1 km long circular path with information boards points out the special features of this tree species, but you should definitely explore the surrounding hiking trails as well. Old yews are characterized by their picturesque growth form. They are often hollow, bizarrely twisted, the orcs of the trees. No two specimens are the same, each tree is unique and has its own personality. You could walk through this area for hours, taking photos of one fascinating tree portrait after another. For anyone who has an emotional connection to trees, a hike in this area is absolutely fantastic! iPhone 12 pro max. Edits with the Lightroom app) As always, this post can - and should - be shared 😉

Rustic inn with a view. We ordered a crusted roast pork with bread dumplings and red cabbage and a Gordonbleu filled with Ettal cheese and potato Gröstl and side salad. The portions were plentiful but the taste of the food was not impressive. The roast pork sauce was "thin" and tasteless and the red cabbage comes with a potato dumpling and not a bread dumpling, which was "rock hard". Unfortunately, the taste of the cheese in the Gordonbleu filling did not go with it at all. The service was great and friendly.
