Grand Mercure Hualing Urumqi strikes the perfect balance between international polish and warm Xinjiang hospitality. My Deluxe room was impeccably clean, whisper-quiet and had a bathtub which stood out among the other hotels. Every amenity felt a notch above similar properties in western China.
What truly sets the hotel apart is its people. General Manager 罗强 (Watt) knew me by name, and when my travel plans changed, personally re-booked the exact same room for my return stay a week later—complete with a welcome gift. Furthermore, I had left my Apple watch in the room and he has personally kept it for me to be returned on a later date when i revisit China. His effortless blend of professionalism and genuine care rippled through the entire team: concierge tips led me to the city’s best lamb kebabs, and housekeeping even left an extra set of water when asked. Thanks to Watt and his staff, Grand Mercure Hualing has become my automatic choice whenever business—or the lure of Silk Road flavors—brings me back to Urumqi.

The location is good and next to a shopping center which caters many kinds of goods with reasonable price. The breakfast is ok, but some guests just couldn’t obey the “non smoking rule” in the hotel

Watt, the night manager, is the consummate professional. I don’t know how you managed to steal him from the Ritz-Carlton. He handled a few tricky situations with noisy neighbors and even arranged a room change for me once—probably because I was complaining too much. Thank you Watt, see you soon.

Weirdest check-in process of any of my 10+ hotels in China as they kept my passport for 30 mins while I went to my room + took deposit of 3 times my booking amount (which wasn't stated on Trip). Room also smelled of smoke as clearly smoking is allowed in other rooms and it comes in through ventilation (I've given up complaining about this in China but expected an international chain to have different standards). Nice restaurant in lobby offering local cuisine and assistant was helpful bringing up my bag and setting up wifi for me.
