Araliya Beach Resort & Spa Unawatuna- Where You Meet the Sea All Year
4.3/561 Reviews
We are currently staying at Araliya Unawatuna resort. So far the experience has been very disappointing to start with. Check in was delayed due to various reasons. High season and very busy. One of our family member’s room was booked in as a triple room for 3 adults. We booked this reservation six months ago. They said we can pay when we get to the hotel. However after going back and forth this was sorted finally. The whole check in process took about 1 hour. I won’t go into details of this as this was sorted. The breakfast buffet - Out of juice selection only mixed fruit fresh juice. All other juices are cordial. Small amount of watermelon was kept in the breakfast buffet for fruits. No other fruits in the buffet. For a five star hotel you would expect to have a decent selection of fresh fruits. Dinner buffet also did not have any fresh fruits. Today we wanted to order a drink from the pool bar. We normally look forward to have drinks by the pool bar. We were told since we are a group booking we cannot order drinks and charge to the room. The pool bar man spoke to the management and we were advised they won’t be able to take our order. This was highly disappointing as I don’t carry cash or credit cards when we are in the pool. This made us feel very unwelcomed. Very poor customer service. They give only one room key. If there are two people in the room you need two room keys. Otherwise without the key we cannot even access the lift and go to our room. Somehow the guy at the reception was very nice and gave us two keys on request. He did say the management has discouraged giving two keys. I will not say his name as I do not want this person at the reception to get in trouble. Pool towels- they give you a card. When you want a towel you have to hand the card to the pool man and then they give you the towel. When. Returning the towel, they give us the card back. If you loose the card they charge you LKR 3000. We have been to many five star resorts around the world and never had to go through all this to get a pool towel. The bathroom had only 2 towels when we booked for 2 adults and a child ( 8 years of age) We were out the whole morning in the pool and then the beach. We put the sign for the room to be cleaned in the morning. As soon as we arrived to the room at 1 pm , the cleaning person came to clean the room. This is only a small issue. At least the guy came to clean the room, but with everything else it just added up. We have booked three nights and checking out on the 31/12/24. Just wish we didn’t book 3 nights!!!! Whoever is in charge of management is sadly not doing a good job. I hope they take this review well and improves the management.

Positives The place is not catered as a hotel ideally instead it’s more of a the pass visitors to eat drink and spend nice time at the beach and that's pretty much it. Negatives The customer service of most of the staff was not good and were not attentive at all to what we were requesting and asking us the same question multiple times probably because of language barrier We booked an executive suite however the line was dirty in our room. The hotel was playing loud music most of the day until 11 o’clock at night which I’m perfectly fine with however you could hear the music in the rooms as well making it difficult for kids to sleep in the room at the same time. We had no Wi-Fi in the rooms and the hotel seem to be clueless how to fix it and easy thing for them to say was that it was an Internet service provider issue. however, all of a sudden on the second day the hotel was able to give us a new user password to a different WiFi. My question is why not give it on the first day itself when the Internet issue was there. The hotel is in no way classified to be called as a small luxury hotel, but more of a mere three star hotel strange to say but we were at a tropical place and that ran out of pineapple juice and hence they could not serve any pineapple based cocktails their answer was yes it’s on the way and should be there in 20 minutes however even pass post 45 minutes the staff either forgot to mention that the drinks were available or just forgot about our order Also getting into our room there was construction happening below our room and above our room as well. so when entering the rooms smelling cement and silica and once you are below the room you are hearing the sounds of cutting wood or marble On the flipside all these comments have been passed on to the manager and the necessary staff. However I would highly discourage hotel guests who think of a dream hotel stay at this property - kindly avoid and if you want to use the property as a place to take nice Instagram photos videos while enjoying your meals and beverages at the beach, nothing more Yes the review has been harsh however really in our 4th trip to SL this property was the 1st major letdown.

Hotel Panorama

We thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay at Hotel Panorama. The bungalow was clean and spacious and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. The gardens and views looking down over the bay are gorgeous. But like all views from such a vantage point, has a hill to climb however this was not a problem and when we were being lazy, we just rung the bell at the gates and the staff drove the tuk tuk down to take us up. Breakfast: fruit, eggs etc, toast, tea or coffee and of course the Sri Lankan breakfast which I highly recommend. Lots of animals including monkeys and birds too see and of course, not forgetting the resident tortoises 😊 A lovely place to stay and I'd like to thank the staff for their kindness and hospitality
Villa Thawthisa the Boutique Hotel Unawatuna

The view is great and breathtaking during sunset. They keep the hotel premises and garden clean. But when entering to the hotel, we feel like its an isolated/neglected place. Path is broken and both sides covered with ugly trees and bushes. No one to look at until we park and go to the reception. People park the vehicles wherever they want blocking other vehicles (we had to wait nearly half an hour to move our vehicle because someone was blocking it).We got a deluxe room with pool access. The bathroom design is so stupid and uncomfortable design. Rooms are not nice as the photos they have posted in web. Room amenities are ok but furniture and design of the room looks cheap. There is a very small staff. They looked like some random people found for day pay. Restaurant has no proper AC. We were sweating while having meals. There was only one guy to serve us who is not even wearing a mask. Special thank should go to the Chef. He had arranged very tasty food for the limited budget(we heard how they discuss the meal budget and all. They were too noisy and disturbing). Meal quantity is really small. Took longer time to serve. However next day breakfast was a buffet which was better. Rooftop is flooded when raining. Such a beautiful view is wasted. Elevator is out of service and we have to climb 4 floor to the restaurant. (this was reported in other reviews posted long ago). Such a beautiful location is wasted due to mismanagement.
Thambapanni Retreat

Firstly this probably merits 3.5 out of 5. The reason is I felt quite disappointed when we arrived, having booked directly with the hotel and asking for “Superior” rooms which bear no resemblance to the Superior ones shown on the well-known booking site. I initially thought we’d been given the wrong rooms and had to double check with reception . We had two rooms which at $96 per night were the most expensive of our trip. We don’t normally spend a lot on hotels so this was meant to be a treat at the end of a long tour. These rooms were pretty basic, smelt quite musty as they were built in to the rock face, had many steps to reach and the sofa in one room was torn. The mosquito net had several holes in it. I understand that Sri Lanka has had a rough time recently but to charge these kind of prices, especially in the low season is not really justifiable. The hotel really needs a good returb, and I noticed that the rooms below ours were being updated during our stay. Plus points were the staff - absolutely amazing, helpful and polite and the food which was delicious- try the fresh fish/seafood plates. Also it was really difficult to find! Put up a sign board! The hotel has some way to go before it can be accurately described as a “luxury boutique hotel”. Overpriced.
