Ryokan Tsuruya

In October 2019, when the typhoon had a big impact on Nagano, I was planning to go from Kusatsu Onsen to Bessho Onsen, but it was canceled (I was offered a glass of wine this time). I rebooked this inn for the first time in 4 years. Reviews are mixed: black phone, old, cold, no hot water. The room is a Kyoto room, so it's small in a Kanto style, but the lintel, nagaoshi, and wall features are more elaborate than they look. I don't really like eating in my room. The food was a good amount and included matsutake mushrooms. The bar counter in the lobby has also been transformed into a reading area for the owner, and the garden is lush enough to remind you of the beauty of yesteryear. The hot water is good, but the water is sulfur and acidic, so the faucets here and there are broken, but that's just as the reviews say. There are two parking spaces in front of the inn, and the rest will probably be parked in the hot spring parking lot. I like the fact that it's a family-run business, so there's no annoying customer service, and the host and landlady's natural customer service.
