Hyatt Vacation Club at Northstar Lodge
4.4/5102 Reviews
Other critical reviews here accurately reflected my experience. Pros: The 2 bedroom ”villa” was clean and spacious. The hot tubs and pool were clean, the water very clear. Grasshoppers in and out of the water, alive and dead, were notable but didn't bother us. Cons: #1 problem is the concierge/service and amenities are not up to par for the price and for 4-star property. Concierge gave wrong info or didn't know anything about the Northstar resort (ie. when the gondola runs) even though the property is right next door. To make the experience better for guests, the front desk should make the effort to do some research and be prepared to help guests. Second, a call for extra towels took hours for it to be brought up. Four separate calls for an extra blanket were completely unheeded. Third, other 4-star properties for this price provide extra touches to make guests feel welcomed - drinks in the lobby, newspaper, flashlights. But I realized the amenities and service are probably subpar because this is a timeshare property and not a hotel per se. So as long as you go in realizing that, then you might not be disappointed. Finally, during the summer, there are hardly any places to eat on the property. We would not stay again.
The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe

Top Lake Tahoe ski family hotels. A suite plus twin beds is perfect for a family. Checkin is a bit slow, but I think everything else is perfect. Compared with other Ritz, the lounge feels like a decoration. The price/performance ratio is not high, but other places are not cheap. The restaurant in the hotel that starts with ma is of good quality

The room as very clean, the internet and the TV worked well. It is next to a Tesla Charging station and less than a half a mile from a new Raleys market. The room had a refrigerator and a microwave. Both were very clean and the refrigerator has a freezer compartment. This was very important to get cold packs ready for the next day's trip in the heat.
Northstar California Resort

This review is specific to the ”Northstar Mountain Condos”. These are privately owned units, which Northstar does not disclose anywhere on its website. (FYI - other resorts such as Palisades also rent out privately owned units, but disclose that on their website). You are assigned a unit on the day of arrival so you have no idea what you will get. This is intentional because if you saw actual pictures of the units beforehand, you probably would not book it. Imagine booking a rental on Airbnb or VRBO that did not have pictures! Given Northstar's premium branding and imaging they are trying to market, we trusted that the quality of the Mountain Condos would be worthy of the $1,400 nightly rate for a 3br unit. I expect that some units are better than others, but of course the one we were assigned was very disappointing. We expected that Northstar would ensure some level of consistency with these units, but apparently does not. The unit we stayed in looked like it had not been updated since it was built. The majority of the furniture was the original furniture the owner's brought in when this place was built 40 years ago. Electrical outlets were worn, decades old beds, inadequate water heater for a 3br unit, furniture that was literally falling apart, broken floor boards, crooked kitchen cabinets, faulty lights...just to name a few issues. If you are comfortable rolling the dice to ”see what you get”, good luck to you. I would highly advise not booking through Northstar for these units. If you like the location and are looking for condos/ homes, I would recommend searching on Airbnb and VRBO for rental units in this community. At the very least, you would be able to select a specific unit that you can vet beforehand, and likely save some money. There really is no benefit received by booking through Northstar. The resort is trying to benefit from the premium image generated by having the Ritz Carlton and Welk Resorts onsite, but these units in no way warrant a premium price. Northstar's marketing for these units is highly deceptive and needs to be corrected. Please avoid.
Truckee Donner Lodge

Last minute decision to stay in Truckee after enjoying dinner in historic downtown, wanted a spot with a hot tub as we’d been driving and playing softball a lot, found this spot that was relatively inexpensive. Hot tub jets weren’t functioning, front desk was aware and said they’d called ownership to advise them, water was clean and warm so we sat in it for a bit but would have been nice to have the jets working. Lobby is quaint, mountain rustic touches, the hallways and rooms are a little dated and could use some touch ups, but I appreciated the small touches like the light fixture above bed being moose to give it that mountain / tahoe vibe. Bed was a little firm for our liking, good power outlets next to bed, a/c functioned well, couldn’t hear the highway adjacent at all. Why 4 stars - the complementary breakfast and 24-7 coffee/hot chocolate machine! The staff were friendly and polite, asking if we needed anything. Sausage, bacon, pancakes, bagels, waffles, eggs, banana and poppy seed muffins, yogurt. Nothing fancy but did the trick and felt family owned which I value. Wish we could have gotten down to the creek but the shrub was too high.

Convenient near the highway. The facilities are very clean and large. There are not many amenities in the room, but you can ask the front desk. Breakfast quality is not so high
