Fantastic! Such a warm welcome to begin with Ed, Kath and the team got us sorted and into our room hassle free. The room was great! Everything you want or need from a hotel, with an absolutely stunning view from the balcony (see pictures). We don’t feel the rooms being serviced daily is needed but, the guys were happy to work around us when we felt it was needed! Showers are a big thing for me and the shower was great, decent pressure and temperature with ample towels provided - towels were like bath sheets which is great for the larger man. Bed and pillows were so comfortable and had the stamp of approval from my 28week pregnant partner! The location was quiet, with just the sounds of the waves at night, to gently soothe you to sleep. Breakfast - this was absolutely phenomenal- great produce, much of which I understand is local cooked to perfection. It’s not a surprise that they were given awards for it All in all ✅ The location is fantastic ✅ The team were wonderful ✅ The facilities were great ✅ The beds are pregnant lady approved ✅ The breakfasts are phenomenal Honestly if you need a break, in this beautiful part of the country, you can’t go wrong with The Downs Babbacombe!

The Downs Hotel in Babbacombe occupies a central location on the Babbacombe Downs. Many of its rooms overlook the stunning coastal view and have little balconies. Ed and Kate the proprietors, provide a freshly cooked hearty breakfast with lots of options including fresh fruit, croissant straight from the oven as well as the more traditional full English. So you won't go hungry. The hotel does not provide an evening meal but there are other little restaurants and bars within walking distance that can and the variety is comprehensive. Our room had an enormous bed that was extremely comfortable ensuring an excellent nights sleep. The room was spotless with lots of fresh towels and hot water. The staff are very helpful and considerate at all times and cannot do enough for you. We felt that we had been looked after and we had received incredible service and value for money. The best of the English Riviera is on the doorstep just across a quiet street beyond the green swathe of parkland. At one end there is the Babbacombe theatre where there is a weekly and weekend show during the summer months. There are fabulous views of the coast, the beach at Oddicombe is a brilliantly sheltered place to take the family for a swim. There is a small cafe where you can order lunch, refreshments and ice creams and a vernacular railway that can ferry you up and down the cliff if you have over indulged. There are also footpaths that lead along the coast to Babbacombe Quay. A nice 10 minute stroll. The shops are not far away, the 122 open topped double decker bus runs past the hotel every 30 minutes and this will take you to Torquay and Paignton and back , or as one driver shouted out 'to infinity and beyond!' We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Downs Hotel in Babbacombe and I wouldn't hesitate to go back there. They are even dog friendly so you can take all the family with you! To ensure that you get exactly what you want its better to give the hotel a call and book with them direct.

As a solo traveller, with a dog, I found this experience delightful. I was met at reception and was shown to my lovely room, even carried my bags for me, which was very much appreciated. The room was great! Fantastic views from the balcony and the bed was huge! This is very important as although I am travelling solo this time, when I do travel as a couple, having a comfortable large bed makes all the difference to a good night's sleep. A pot of fresh coffee was brought up, which again was very welcome after my journey. The bed was comfortable and the linen high quality. I stayed for 2 nights and didn't have any food at the Downs, so cannot comment on that, but I feel certain it would have been lovely, as everything else was. There were ample tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits in the room. Thank you for making my stay a pleasure. I'm sure I will be back.

Ok. Let's start with the positives. This hotel is in a beautiful location, overlooking Babbacombe Bay and a room with balcony on days with warm weather like when we visited; a very memorable experience. The breakfast was decent and served in a clean, modern room. These were the positives. The negatives unfortunately overwhelmed the positives. It was too expensive a price to pay for a "compact" room which had about a foot between the end of the bed and the wall, a useless shower with absolutely no power and non-existant WiFi. You enter the hotel through a bar area which would have looked tired 20 years ago. Now it looks positively comatose! Up two flights of stairs to the tiny, sorry compact, room with the utterly useless shower. I discussed this with the owner who just made excuses. He needed a pump to get more power from the shower and just didn't do this but reassured me that next time he would look at this. There won't be a next time for us as £430 for 3 nights in this hotel with these faults is too expensive. Breakfast was extra. As a goodwill measure I'd have given the breakfasts on the house after I pointed out the issues to Nicola who had an indifferent attitude, wouldn't budge when I suggested such a goodwill measure and we left, never to return.

On arrival we were greeted by Nicola who was instantly friendly. We were allocated room 12 which is on the top floor/left handside of the hotel when looking towards the fantastic views across the English Channel, some trees block part of the view. Room 12 looked a little tired but was adequately furnished and great size bed. En suite was big enough for us and was clean. A great nights sleep and breakfast was included when we booked. It consisted of complimentary continental and we ordered the full english ( other options available ). WOW, best cooked breakfast ever, quality ingredients and boy were we full. We recommend this hotel due to it's position with stunning views, dog friendly and lovely staff. ❤️

We booked The Downs as a base to do a couple of days touring in the area. This is probably the best family run hotel we have stayed in. Our room (No.4) - on the first floor - was a good size with a very comfortable large bed. The view from the balcony was superb and we spent several hours just sitting there, enjoying the view across the Bay and watching the world go by. The staff were very attentive and friendly. On arrival we were offered tea/coffee which was very welcome after a long drive. At the time of our visit, the Hotel was not offering evening meals, but they were more than happy for us to buy food and eat in the room, or in the downstairs reception area or dining room. On the first night we tried to get fish & chips from Hanburys', but the queue was very long so we went around the corner to Drakes' and had fish & chips from there - which was very nice, eating it on our balcony! Immediately to the left and right of The Downs are restaurants and bars - there is a little street noise, but this did not bother us at all. The breakfasts were very good - the full English kept me going all day - and the breakfast menu is far better than you may get in a larger hotel - and the quality of the food was excellent. One reason for choosing The Downs, is that they are "Dog Friendly" - we took two of our smaller dogs with us. Immediately outside The Downs is a promenade area, with great sea views and you can walk down to two nearby breaches. There is a Pay Car Park to the rear of The Downs, which always had spaces - so parking was not a problem. All in all, I would highly recommend The Downs and we hope to return there.
