Raven and Mark are incredible hosts and have created an amazing lodge in Big Island. Off the beaten path but yet close to town, it's the perfect escape. The suite was huge with a beautiful garden and outdoor shower. In the morning, Raven made delicious breakfast with eggs, toast and fruit presented very artistically! Rest of the day we spent in nearby beaches and also watched gorgeous sunsets from their lanai. Can't recommend this place enough!

If you want an experience and not a hotel, this is a good place to consider. Don’t complain if you wanted a Marriott; it’s not the Marriott. The hostess and host are kind and genuine. The lodging is nestled in a neighborhood, but it feels almost like a jungle. The shower is outside and is reasonably private. Don’t mind the geckos lingering nearby as you enjoy fresh fruit for breakfast.

Away from the hustle and bustle of both Kona and Hilo - a great get away location not far from Pahoa. We were greeted by Raven, our hostess, when we arrived and were immediately upgraded to a room with a private garden, complete with a wonderful hot water bath tub and shower, at no extra charge. The beds are wonderfully soft and firm at the same time (magic?) with many billowy pillows and soft, high quality bedding. Each bed had a bedside table on each side, reading lamp and plenty of outlet space. The mosquito netting was charming and romantic but we saw no sign of mosquitos. The garden had lush vegetation, tropical flowers and tree frogs that sang us to sleep at night. Raven takes great attention to detail and the room provided snorkel equipment, flip flops, sun tan lotion, skin soothing lotion, nice soaps, you name it. Lots of soft fluffy towels, beach towels, etc. there was juice and flavored cans of water, fruit and other welcome snacks in the refrigerator. There is shared space, including a kitchen, but we were too tired from great local activities to take advantage. All the reviews rave about Raven’s breakfasts and they are on point. Although there were other choices available we had fancy French toast with our beautiful fruit salads almost every day. We were joined by beautiful, friendly geckos for breakfast, one of the reasons we chose Ma’ukele Lodge. One day when we had to leave very early for a snorkel excursion, Raven made us something special to eat on the way. Mark, Raven’s partner, was a fount of local cultural/history info which, as anthropologists, we greatly enjoyed hearing about. He and Raven can direct you to great local activities, even when the weather is not as hoped. We saw many sea turtles very close up at Carl Smith beach nearby in Hilo and a little further away in the opposite direction towards Kona at Punalu’u - beautiful. Lack sand. The lodge has its own beach a 3 minute walk from the door. We could listen to waves crashing all night long in addition to tree frogs. Raven is such a gracious host she even washed the wet clothes my boyfriend had put out to dry! And on the last day, when we were leaving for the airport - our rental car would not start. Raven quickly got a neighbor to give us a jump start (he would not accept any payment) and we made our plane on time! This would be a great property for events like family reunions, weddings, and families staying with kids.

If you like hotels with all the amenities, this might not be the place for you. This is an amazing bed-and-breakfast! The house is surrounded by tropical plants and wildlife. All night you will be serenaded by frogs and birds. Our room had an outdoor shower and bath that were private and secluded. Every morning we had coffee and a wonderful fruit bowl. We were also offered eggs and toast. Our hosts, Raven And Mark, were very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. They had great recommendations on local beaches, local restaurants, and good places to visit all over the big island. I will definitely be staying here again!

What isn’t unique about this place? It’s an intimate b&b, we stayed in the larger room which has three full size beds with nets and a kitchenette. The bathtub and shower are outside - fenced from prying eyes but fun. The decor is Bohemian Eclectic and I spent quite a bit of time in the living room of the main house jamming with host Mark - he just got a stand up bass to go with the piano and ukes I remember from last time (did I mention we came back). Excellent breakfast on the deck looking at the ocean, geckos peeping at us. It’s not for people who absolutely need AC or who can’t handle the chorus of frogs doing their frog song at night. It’s way out there, geographically and figuratively. But we love it.

Raven is a sweet and phenomenal host, and the property is beautiful! Gorgeous views, private beach access to watch the sunrise. I loved the outdoor shower, and the beds were really comfy!

The Ma'ukele Lodge is a very unique place. The grounds and beach are gorgeous. The lava flow is right between the house and the ocean, and walking to the beach was an amazing and beautiful experience. The breakfast was great and so was sharing it with the geckos.
