Every year we try to spend a least 4 weeks in a rented property in Southern France, taking several days to get there and several days to return, in a small open car. It's our alternative to buying a place of our own. Limiting ourselves to 200 miles a day, we make a point of staying overnight in chambres d'hotes. The Abbaye du Palais was one of our latest stays. Imposing buildings in a beautiful location is the first impression, followed by the welcome from the owners. The spacious room (typically high ceiling), large comfortable with quality linen, a cupboard containing tea/ coffee facilities, a small refridgerator, next to plenty of hanging space for clothes, demonstrated attention to detail. The sizeable bathroom contained a large, walk in shower, large basin and toilet AND an original, cast iron, roll top bath. Towels and toiletries are provided together with lots of really hot water. Use of the Library and Bar is recommended but more than that, go for the optional evening dinner (with wine). Sander does not profess to be a chef, but prepared salmon tartare as an entree, a main course of sous vide veal and a dessert of strawberry sorbet in a white chocolate sauce with an exquisite fondant chocolate served in the central dining room, with a choice of wines by the glass. We would have liked to stay for several days, but had a Ferry booking to make. For us it was the highlight of this year's vacation.
