Aging hotel with hints of a by gone era. Staff are friendly and helpful though English may be lacking (just a heads up to have your favorite translator app working). Breakfast is ok but options are limited in the area. The onsen facilities are great. Overall I think I got value for what I paid for.

Kawayu Onsen is a little quiet, with not many shops. There is a convenience store about a 3-minute walk away. There is a visitor center and forest trails next to the hotel, and there are also trails leading to Sulphur Mountain. The hotel is old, but very clean. The soundproofing is not good but everyone is very quiet. The bed is a single-sized foam mattress, so it is a bit hard, and the quilt is very comfortable. There is a happy hour with sake and drinks in the lobby. Breakfast was simple and standard. The hot springs are of good quality and the hot spring pool is also very large. Overall, if you can accept an older hotel, this is a very cost-effective hotel for an overnight hot spring bath.

This is the hotel with the largest room in Japan. The tatami is very unique.
But the facilities are a bit old.
The breakfast is not reliable. They told us that it is only available at 6:30 or 7 o'clock. We woke up late and the restaurant was open but refused us entry. We didn't have breakfast.
