Kind of annex of the sister hotel next door. In the annex is an onsen, washing machine and dryer (free to use), vending machines with beer and drinks and noodles. Room is basic. I had a great view on the river. Small balcony, but dirty and no chair. The annex is okay to stay if you are hiking.
The best thing is the sister hotel. A great onsen with outdoor bath. Nice souvenir shop with a bit more food. Staff are super friendly and helpful.
They also provide bus services (bring and pickup to Hongu Taisha, the other onsen places, the trailhead busstop) which you can use! Just call them if you want to be picked up.
I did not realize Kawayu Onsen is a very small place with NO supermarket. If you did not book breakfast (served at the sister) bring your own into town or eat instant noodles.
There are 2 small restaurants with delicious local food.

There are not a lot of cheaper options in the area. This hotel is a typical "cheap" Japanese hotel. All was as expected: small rooms, super clean, brad facilities. All in all, charming, but old.

This hotel is okay, it was a bit dingy and the room smelt a little bit of smoke - but I was totally fine with that because you get to use the great onsen at the partner hotel next door (spent my time there), and the area was really nice. I liked it as a cheap option along the kumano kodo.

The rooms have two comfortable futons. They also have a small balcony. The hotel has a partnership with a hotel a two-minute walk away where you can go to the hot springs for free and bathe and shower there. We went to those because they were mixed, but the hotel has its own hot springs with separate genders. Towels are changed daily.
The Kawayu Onsen (Kumano Kodo) bus stop is a four-minute walk away.

Stayed here for the second time. Very cost-effective hotel. It is very old and the facilities are old. But the meals and hot springs are served at the Midoriya next door, which is good. The Midoriya has a free shuttle bus that takes you to Hongu Taisha and Hoshinmon in the morning, which is very considerate service.
