It was 3rd day when my wife and I are hiking KUMANO KODO. After 6 and half hour hiking and 20 minutes bus, we arrived at Watarase Onsen Hotel Sasayuri around 5pm. At checking counter, we found that I booked wrong day - one day late….. However service person rearranged room and dinner for us within less than half hour. Their traditional Japanese service and food are amazing and forgettable. I will be for sure coming back when I revisit this area.

Kumano Hongu is a hot spring town, including Yunomine Onsen, Kawayu Onsen, and Watase Onsen. Compared with the famous Kawayu Onsen, the Watase Onsen Hotel we booked is in a small valley, which is more niche and quieter. The hotel has three floors, with only 10 Japanese and Western-style rooms on each floor. We arrived at the hotel at around 1 pm. We were not told that we could only check in after 3:00 as usual. They helped us check in and introduced the rules of bathing. The room is very large, with twin beds + tatami, facing the river bank, and cherry blossoms outside the window.
There are two hotels and four hot springs here, all of which can be bathed. There is the largest open-air bath in western Japan and the family-specific open-air bath in Japan.
The dishes provided for dinner are very exquisite, and the breakfast is also exquisite.

Stayed for two consecutive days. The hotel staff was very friendly and could communicate in English. No matter what the problem was, they were very enthusiastic and tried their best to help you solve it.
1. There is a free shuttle bus to Hoshinmon Prince Shrine and Hongu Taisha Shrine every day. In addition, the front desk can arrange a free shuttle bus from the hotel to the bus station.
2. You can ask the front desk to arrange for your large luggage to be sent to the next hotel (hotels that are too far away may need to pay a small fee, but hotels that are very close are free)

The location is near the hiking trails and it is very convenient to take the bus.
However, there is only one small restaurant nearby. If you don't want to eat the hotel's kaiseki (because I have eaten it for three days!), there are actually not many good options nearby.
There is no coffee for breakfast. You have to press the button of the coffee machine outside the restaurant after breakfast. Although it is free, it is inconvenient.
