My family had a recent stay at the AmericInn by Wyndham in Stuart, IA. After a long drive with my family including 2 dogs, I hoped for a comfortable room and a restful night. We reserved a suite with a king size bed and a pull-out sofa bed. After checking in to the AmericInn, we learned that our room was on the 2nd floor and the hotel had no elevator. We had to hand carry all of our luggage up two flights of stairs. There was only one way in and out of the hotel, the front door. Most hotels have a convenient side door that may be closer to your room which is nice for taking dogs in and out. Customer convenience is clearly not a priority at the AmericInn. After carrying all of the luggage up the stairs, my son carried our small dog in his arms up to the room while I carried the dog's empty crate (which is where he sleeps). When I came back down the stairs to retrieve something from our vehicle, I was stopped by a man at the front desk who questioned me about the animals I brought to our room. I explained to him that I had two dogs, that I had already checked in, paid the pet fees and already signed the pet agreement. He proceeded to accuse me of bringing a cat in. I was confused at this accusation since I was not traveling with, nor do I own a cat. The interaction with this man was not pleasant and I found him to be rude. After years of family road trips, I have never experienced this type of treatment in other hotels. The floors in the lobby, on the stairs and in the hallway appeared dirty, not only with stained carpets but they didn't appear to have been vacuumed in quite a while. The room itself felt unclean. There was a used bar of soap on the sink. The furniture was stained. We did not feel comfortable touching anything and did not pull-down covers on the bed. We noticed on the ceiling in the front room with the sofa bed that there was a fire alarm and next to it appeared to be a second fire alarm-looking device with a pin hole in it. In the bedroom on the ceiling directly above the bed was the same thing, a fire alarm with a second device next to it that appeared have a pin hole in it. A quick Amazon search showed camera's that looked exactly like the extra devices on the ceiling. I would not be surprised if the devices were actually camera's recording the people in the rooms. This seems like the shady type of hotel that would do that. The hotel is in a small town with not many options, so we did stay the night. We felt so uncomfortable there, that we did not undress in the room and did not stay for the breakfast and checked out as quickly as we could. Our stay definitely did not give us a good impression of the AmericInn hotels or Wyndham company, and we will most likely avoid patronizing them in the future.
