Quay Head View Aparthotel

We booked a self-catering apartment for 7 days and we have had the most wonderful time visiting places from our hub in Stranraer. The apartment was so well set up with everything you could possibly need - having a half fridge & small freezer was brilliant and the local supermarket was within walking distance. Nothing was too much trouble. There is a huge free open carpark across the street, there were 2 ferry ports for our day trips, there is an elevator, great free wifi and excellent security. All of the apartments are wheelchair accessible too. We were warmly welcomed by the owner Colin and Margaret, her husband and her colleagues looked after us if there was anything we needed or wanted to know. Excellent value and definitely a place we would book again if we ever come back to Scotland. We have no problem recommending this as a fabulous place to stay, and in our 6 weeks driving around Scotland, we can honestly say it was the best.

The main reason room 1 has old cobwebs hanging from ceiling light shade so clearly cleaning not done properly. The room was also small for a double and looks like 2 single beds pushed together The food in restaurant was nice but the cooked breakfast was dire, very dry on the plus side poached eggs were perfect. One of the biggest bug bears we prefer to pay cash and we were told by the lovely young ladies who greeted us on arrival said we could pay by cash as long as we had the correct money but when we went to pay at the bar was told no card only.. very disappointing. We paid our bill by card but was not happy. We went outside on the steps and a barman or maybe a manager (tall with black hair) put his head around the door and in my opinion very rudely demanded to know who told us we could pay by card.... we enjoyed Portpatrick but if we return will not stay at this hotel. Only 2 stars given as a very poor experience

Stayed at the hotel for its close proximity to the Cairnryan Port due to an early ferry departure the following morning. We had a comfortable room fit for our needs, with ample space for the family. There is a car park onsite. We arrived late and left early, so weren't able to use the facilities, but the areas we did see were well presented. They were kindly able to arrange a takeaway breakfast for us, as we were leaving before breakfast was served.

I’ve now given it two chances which was two too many. First time was earlier in the summer when I was walking part of the southern upland way. I stopped in for a coffee to be ignored by a rather imperious, bored looking guy at reception. The place was deserted. Eventually he couldn’t ignore me any longer. I asked if I could have coffee and he directed me to the bar. I went into the empty bar and waited about 15 minutes and no one appeared. I just left. Today I went back with my husband. This time we were pointedly ignored at reception by 3 people. Again the lobby was empty. Eventually my husband asked one of the women if we could have coffee. She said yes but walked away. Several of the tables in the lobby area had used plates and cans on them. We sat down expecting the table to be cleared and our order to be taken. Eventually the woman appeared with two weak , milky coffees. Which we hadn’t ordered. Apparently it’s that on nothing. They don’t expect you to have a preference. We had to ask her to clear away the used dishes which she did, leaving behind a big puddle of water on the table. When we were leaving an elderly couple asked if they could sit at our table ( admittedly the view from there was spectacular). I went to reception and told the same woman that other people wanted the table but it needed wiping down. She said she would, but as I waited for my husband I noticed she hadn’t bothered and looked like she was leaving for the day. The terrible coffee was £3 each!
