The highways are full of decades-old motels, competing with newer, brand-name monikers. Travelers are often in search of a quick, one-night, short-stay, last minute room, as they travel long distances. We checked into the Rodeway Inn on Solida Rd in South Point, Ohio ( just across the bridge from Ashland KY), for such a one-night short stay. In fact we checked in at 5:30 pm and we were out the following morning by 7:30 (we e actually had a Christmas party to attend in nearby Ashland from 7 pm until 11 pm). All we wanted was a clean, comfortable room, bath and bed for a very short overnight stay. I am generally quite leery of such motels, however I am pleased to state that this former Best Western, now a Rodeway Inn met and surpassed our expectations! I asked to see our room prior to purchase, and the proprietor gladly escorted us to room 227. I was pleasantly surprised to enter a slightly dated, however otherwise nicely kept, odor-free and clean room and carpeting. The furniture was in nice condition, and the bed linens were as fresh as can be imagined. The proprietor and his wife seem to go to great ends to ensure they are not a typical older roadside motel, and they are very pleasant! As you can see by the pictures, the room was clean nicely kept. There were no signs of any bugs at all, no smoking, or dirty anything as some reviews report. The bathroom a was surprisingly clean and recently updated, with plenty of hot water. The grounds were also clean and well kept for its age. Overall, I would give this motel a 4.5 rating, given an “x.5” is not permitted, I am rounding to 4.0. I would confidently put it in the upper 90% of similar motels in its niche category. The room was priced very favorably for a short overnight stay. In fact, we will be returning in the early spring for another similar stay for a “Spring-arrival” party (in Ashland) and we will certainly stay here again! This review is based on our one-night experience in room 227. I slept well!
