Kanaya Ryokan

Had an afternoon out at the next town along the railway line, before catching the train back here to stay overnight. We had been going to eat in the next town, in case the hotel wasn't doing food, but the description on the website made the food sound such a feature that we decided we'd like to do it. Unsurprisingly on a midweek night in January, they weren't doing food, but that was fine, we wandered along to 7-11 and got a wonderful picnic of pot noodles and all sorts of interesting things. We stayed in a Japanese room in the main building and it was fantastic, so great to stay in somewhere so historic! The room was unchanged from 100 years ago, apart from the addition of wifi, heating, air con! The bedding was really warm and comfy. When we got there, the main bath area seemed quite busy, so we went to use one of the private baths (you take a token from Reception and hang it on the door to indicate occupied, remember to return it to Reception afterwards). You take your outdoor shoes off at Reception and swap to indoor slippers, which you take off at the entrance to your room and just walk in socks on the tatami mats. There are separate outdoor-slippers which you use to walk to the block with the private baths in, take them off in the porch area outside that block. The man on Reception was lovely and helpful in explaining all this! The private bath was great - a set of three pools at different temperatures. We then decided to have a little nap and go to the thousand-person bath after 9pm when the day-visitors had left. We slept for longer than expected, and woke up at 1am, so went to the big bath then (it's open all night for residents). Unsurprisingly, we had it to ourselves at that hour! The getting through from the ladies' changing rooms to the mens/joint bath was a lot easier than expected - there is an area of knee-deep water, with a door and a row of hooks with keys on wristbands. I took a key, unlocked the door and went through. I left my key with my towel on the side of the bath, but I guess you're supposed to keep them on your wrist. The water temperature was lovely, and the bath was beautiful, a really great experience. You can also go out to a little outside area, which is slightly cooler (in January, at least, maybe not in mid-summer). It was an amazing place to stay, and well worth visiting.
Beach Side Inn Shirahama

Just off Shirahama coast, there is no more location for divers. However, the last road to enter the inn from national route 135 seems to be missed, and it is narrow and necessary to be careful. The bath has two open-air baths for rental except for the unit bus in the room. It is not a reservation system, but if it is empty, the person wins early. Body soap, shampoo, conditioner, bathtub, open and comfortable. Tea, tea and coffee can be self-drinking at any time and can be comfortable even if it is not a diver.

New property on the beachfront. Extremely hospitable and helpful hosts who went out of their way to make us comfy. The owners only speak Japanese so if you speak Japanese and love seafood, highly recommend!
Saint Raphael Villa

I dont usually write about the places I stayed to but I just thought this one deserve a review.. also to help others who is thinking of booking this villa but having second thought just like me since it doesnt provide much photos. Im a kind of person who gather information first before making decision... with this one i cant get that much info or review but book it anyway since it is only for a 1 night stay.. so we stayed there for a night and i must say my family and I loves the room we stayed too. aside from the clean room, the man who assist us was really nice up until we check out and waited until we go.. wave goodbye at us and my kids wave back to him and they were smiling... felt like u just went to a family vacation house and a family is waving bye at u saying see u soon... but anyway this is my review... dont get discourage by the apperance of the outside & the lobby it may not look fancy but for us it looks fine I provided some photos... anyway when we get to the room I was amazed because its very clean and spacious it felt like it is more than what I paid for. I didnt expect too much because I know I chose the cheapest place that I can book since we just need a place to rest after beach and before a long drive the next day but it exceeded my expectation... their very generous with their amenities they have instant coffee and electric kettle, theres also a fridge where you can put your food, with us what we did is we already brought some food so we dont need to buy outside after beach because there is no restaurant close to the villa but if u didn’t brought food there is a close convenient store at shirahama beach where you can buy food and bring it at the villa they have table and couch too inside the room... oh I love the shampoo and conditioner the brand is shisheido (so generous) the bottles were big that even you stay for a week it will be enough they provide shaver, toothbrush and toothpaste too and the towels are white/clean... I love everything about this place the only negative thing I can say is that the top part of the shower curtain has little mold but we didn’t mind since the shower curtain is clean just only the top part maybe because its not new but like i said we didnt mind, because bathroom is so clean... Were planning to go back shimoda again next year since 1 day is not enough to explore it and we will definitely book this place again... thanks again to the man who assisted us. He is so nice...

Iso No Yado Suzufuku
4.9/53 Reviews
This was my 4th visit. When I took my parents last year, I liked Suzufuku very much and stayed for 3 nights this year. Suzufuku-san is a very popular inn, so it is difficult to make a reservation during the peak summer season. The inside of the hotel is very clean, and it is a very relaxing inn that makes you feel like you have returned to your own hometown. It is run by a family, and the staff are all very kind. They prepare barley tea in the room as a service. The number one pleasure here is the fish-centered cuisine. Funamori Ippai sashimi, large boiled fish, fried and grilled locally caught fish. Which one is the best? I am very happy that the children will eat more than I have ever seen because of the deliciousness of this dish. This time, the locally caught fried horse mackerel was excellent. The abalone and Tokobushi cooked rice for breakfast was also great. Even though I have just returned home, my parents are telling me to make a reservation for next year as soon as possible. Heartwarming hospitality and the best food, I think it's definitely the best inn in Shimoda!
