Hôtel Château de Verrières & Spa Saumur

My family and I elected to stay here (formerly Chateau Marquise) because of the excellent reviews on trip advisor. Our stay did not reflect what we had read online from other travelers. While the exterior of the house and the grounds are pretty, it is quite isolated from the center of Saumur (which is not the fault of the hotel but should be noted for others arriving). If you do not rent a car, moving around the area can be quite difficult as the taxi services have a monopoly on transport and are not always reliable. There is plenty of parking on site. The staff are polite but disengaged. The front desk is often “unmanned.” There is no staff on the premises after 9PM. This is not well advertised and would have affected my decision to stay here. There are only ten rooms in the building and not all are occupied. Thus, when the lone staff member leaves at 9PM (and turns off literally all the lights in the hotel hallways and common areas, even the automatic ones triggered by movement), it is lonely and dark. There isn’t even a place to get a glass of water in the dining room after 9. Some of the rooms are quite dated and dusty, others are more fresh. Our rooms were a mix of well cleaned and below average. The bathrooms are spacious with both shower and tub. The hotel breakfast is quite average with supermarket products (yogurts, rolls). I regret participating and spending on the breakfast. The bakeries and restaurants of Saumur are so excellent, the twenty euro a person would have been better spent in the village. Overall, this was not the wisest travel choice I have made. I did not feel safe in the dark and empty chateau at night with no staff and no idea of who else was present. Had I known, I would have made other arrangements. The rest of the stay was not remarkable in any way.

This has to be one of my favourite hotel stays ever. Flore and Jeremy were fabulous hosts and went out of their way to ensure we had a great stay. The rooms are gorgeous - we had a large room with castle views. The decor is stunning throughout the hotel . It was so quiet during the stay - it felt like we were in the middle of the country rather than in the town centre. The spa is definitely worth a visit if you have the time. Again beautifully decorated and tranquil. The stay completely exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Saumur. I can’t wait to visit again when I am next in saumur.

If you want to have the experience of staying in a real chateau this is the place, very beautiful, historic, family service, wonderful decor, it also has a cellar with great sparkling wines. The room is comfortable with period furniture, the breakfast with personalized service and full of tips for exploring the Loire Valley region.

We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in this magnificent Chateau. It is stunning. Congratulations to Flore, Jeremy and your amazingly kind staff on this new adventure for them. They will do very well. We cannot recommend it high enough. It was a perfect relaxing stay. The room we stayed in is gloriously comfortable and every possible thing you need is there. We had a superb stay in the Chateau la Marquise. Our hosts were very warm and welcoming. The Chateau and grounds were so peaceful and full of character. The fresh local produce at breakfast was perfect. We absolutely loved our short stay and will definitely be back again sometime in the future.

We were lucky enough to be booked into this property as part out our bike tour through the Liore Valley, and all I can say is: wow! I don't this there is anywhere else you can be made to feel like such royalty. The Chateaux is grand, we'll maintained, and beautiful. It sits on large, lush grounds and there are beautiful views through all the windows. Our room was very well appointed, clean, and quiet. Although we came during the shoulder season and the hotel was largely vacant, there was no expense spared at breakfast time, with a full spread put out full of luxurious local goodies. Best of all though, are the hosts. They went well out of their way to made sure we felt comfortable, and helped us navigate the area with our very limited (to non-existent) french. From reservations to helping us get to the train station, we were immediately greated with a friendliness that is hard to find on such travels. All in all, I very highly recommend this hotel. It offers a very unique and enjoyable experience that will leave us with happy memories for years to come.

This hotel is a gem. Please stay here. The warm welcome, beautifully appointed rooms, delicious breakfast, delightful surroundings, pretty pool area, relaxing sauna and massage, and excellent service deserve high praise. No request was too much trouble. We really enjoyed our three night stay and we were sad to leave. We wish the owners every success.

Wonderful experience. We are French ex-pats living in the U.S. and we found the hotel standards, including generous suite size, to be very high by both European and American standards. The owners and staff are exceptionally professional, helpful, and friendly. The facilities are lovely, breakfast buffets are delicious, and while the weather did not permit us to make use of the very inviting outdoor pool, we were able to walk around the park-like grounds and take advantage of the spa offerings. An absolute delight - we will most certainly be back!

I can’t think enough superlatives to describe this place. I know my wife and I will be talking about our stay at Chateau La Marquise for the rest of our lives. We were very fortunate in getting to stay there for 7 nights. This gave us the opportunity to get to know Saumur and meet some of the very friendly locals. We realized that this chateau is legendary in this part of the Loire Valley. For many decades it was hidden behind walls, shrubs and gates. The townspeople only got the occasional glimpse of the place. We felt so honored that it has finally been opened to the public and we got to be among the lucky few (other than aristocrats) to experience the chateau. You would think that this experience would be very expensive. Check the rates. It’s not expensive. We loved the architecture, the art, the furniture, and the history but of equal importance were the hosts. Jeremy and his wife Flore are wonderful people. They went out of their way to ensure that we had a splendid time. We honestly felt that we’d made two friends as a result of our stay. If at all possible stay a week. Enjoy the spa in the cellar. Get a massage. Explore the woods on the property. Learn about the interesting history of the chateau. Get to know Jeremy and Flore. This will be an experience you won’t forget.
