Really disappointed with my stay . My room on the first floor was not renovated so it looked nothing like the photos. It had zero atmosphere. I left I got very bad value for money. The restaurant was too busy to provide my dinner- so waited over an hour in the bar for my food to arrive . There was no manager available to discuss my disappointment with my stay. Front staff were pleasant. I found from talking to other travelers and from my walk around the town that there are some lovely places to stay in the town. So do your research better than I did - or lower your expectations if you decide to stay here.

The hotel and the facilities were very good. However the staff were extremely rude to us. We were travelling on the camino and spent a lot of money on the hotel. We were having some fun in the bar/foyer when we were told to keep quiet by a receptionist. We were having a normal conversation. This would have not been a problem except that the very next morning whilst trying to sleep works began with a hammer drill in what appeared to be outside our room. There was zero warning that there was going to be works carried out and we found it somewhat ironic that the staff told us to be quiet at 6 pm but never warned us about works taking place early the next morning which ruined our sleep.

We were hiking the Camino de Santiago and wanted somewhere nice to stay in Sarria for 1 night. The staff at the hotel were good, the rooms were clean but the beds were not that comfortable & the bedding was poor quality. The hotel is quite dated but I think it is probably the best place to stay in Sarria. When we arrived for breakfast at 8am, it was total chaos. There was 1 waiter on duty and most of the buffet area was empty. It was eventually topped up but it was like a bun fight trying to get food. Not a very high quality breakfast experience! We were also not that keen on Sarria as a town.

This was a very nice hotel to stay in with exceptional service from the desk manager. I was walking the Camino and getting my luggage transferred with a company. Unfortunately there was a mix up and my luggage was sent elsewhere. The desk manager was extremely helpful in this stressful situation and helped solve the problem.

Stayed here on our Camino journey. Nice clean room, comfortable beds, piping hot water…..all one needs after a days walking. It was vey wet on the evening we stayed so we decided to eat in the bar/ restaurant. Surprisingly none of the wait staff had any English so with our limited Spanish it took a while to order some food. Service was charming but a bit haphazard in that our main courses were delivered before our starters. Food however was quite tasty and very inexpensive. Breakfast on the following morning was really busy but on this occasion the wait staff spoke excellent English. Good selection of cereals, fresh juices, bacon/ eggs and cold meats. Very tasty. Much of the crowd staying were walking on the Camino. Great stop on the journey.

Stayed at this hotel as the first stage of the Sarria to Santiago Camino. While it is in a good location to start, the hotel itself is average at best. The room is large, but it had just a bad lingering smell of old cigarettes that I'm sure back in the day everyone smoked in the hotels. It was nauseating. And again it being an old hotel, there is no sound insultation at all, you could hear everything. Was not a great sleep to start the Camino. If you can stay somewhere else, do it.

Hotel Alfonso IX is located along the river Sarria, just at the foot of the old town's hill. It brands itself as a 4-star hotel but lacks some of the standard features of such ranking, like bathrobe and slipper and a basic supply of amenities and toeletries (we even asked reception for a simple sewing kit and it wasn't available). The room was very large and well designed, with also some cool design detail in the bathroom, itself very big, but the shower head was defective and the level of cleanness needs to be improved. The breakfast was a negative experience, with an acceptable buffet but an inaccurate service, with only two waitresses tending to far too many customers, hence they were stressed, inefficient and rude. An acceptable place for a night in Sarria considering the large room, but definitely not a real 4-star hotel!
